Tengku Zafrul's GE15 pledge unenforceable, says Tok Mat

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said he could not see how the GE15 pledge could be enforced against Tengku Zafrul Aziz as he did not win the seat he contested. PETALING JAYA : The review of a pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul Aziz when he was a Barisan Nasional candidate in the 15th general election cannot be enforced because he did not win in the election. Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said Tengku Zafrul was appointed as the investment, trade and industry minister in his capacity as a senator, Bernama reported. 'This matter is not included within the scope of the agreement because Tengku Zafrul did not win in the election. 'That pledge is made by any elected representative as a state assemblyman or an MP. 'If they win, the seat belongs to the party, not to the individual. 'The individual who becomes a candidate and wins signs many agreements, including reimbursing the costs incurred by the party and many other things. 'Tengku Zafrul did not win. He became a minister on the basis of being a senator. So I don't see how the pledge can be enforced against him,' he told reporters after a luncheon in Seremban today. He was commenting on a statement by Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi, who urged the party to take stern action against Tengku Zafrul, who announced his departure from Umno to join PKR yesterday. Puad also asked the party to review the pledge signed by Tengku Zafrul when he was a BN candidate in GE15. Tengku Zafrul lost in the election for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat. Puad asked the party to study the possibility of demanding RM100 million in compensation if Tengku Zafrul's action is considered as party hopping. Asked whether the resignation would affect Umno, Mohamad, who is also Rembau MP, said Tengku Zafrul did not hold a high position in the party and it would not have a significant impact on Umno. Earlier today, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party's legal team would review whether Tengku Zafrul had breached the agreement signed during GE15, which binds candidates to the party.

PKR to consider unity govt partners' input on Tengku Zafrul's membership bid

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said Tengku Zafrul Aziz's application, if accepted, will go through the central leadership council. PETALING JAYA : PKR will consider input from grassroots members and its partners in the unity government when evaluating any membership application, including one from Tengku Zafrul Aziz, says party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Fuziah said the party has not received any official application from Tengku Zafrul despite his statement on social media indicating his intention to join PKR. 'For the record, all applications to join PKR must be submitted online,' she said in a statement today. 'Each application will go through the usual process. Once submitted online, it will be processed and tabled at a central leadership council (MPP) meeting. 'The application will be duly considered before a decision is made, taking into account various perspectives, including those of our partners in the unity government and opinions from the grassroots.' Tengku Zafrul, the current investment, trade and industry minister, had announced his resignation from Umno and said he would be applying to join PKR, citing 'compatibility and suitability'. He was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and head of the Kota Raja Umno division. Tengku Zafrul was appointed as a senator and minister under the administrations of Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Anwar Ibrahim. He contested the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in the last general election, but did not win. Fuziah also extended well wishes to Tengku Zafrul, who is set to perform the hajj pilgrimage this season. 'PKR prays for his safe journey and return,' she said in the same statement.

Form Five student dies in collision with lorry after returning from extra classes in Kuala Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — A Form Five student was killed in a road accident after his motorcycle collided with a lorry on Jalan Parit Mahang in Jeram, Kuala Selangor yesterday. The 17-year-old male student died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 2.15pm. According to Harian Metro, Kuala Selangor district police chief Superintendent Azaharudin Tajudin said initial investigations found that the empty lorry, driven by a 26-year-old man, was turning from the main road into Jalan Parit Mahang. He said, 'The victim was travelling from Jalan Parit Mahang to the main road on his way home to Ijok.' 'Upon reaching the location, the motorcyclist from the opposite direction is believed to have lost control and veered into the path of the lorry before crashing into the front of the heavy vehicle,' he said when contacted today. As a result of the impact, the teenager was flung onto the road and sustained multiple injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Azaharudin said the student had earlier attended extra classes at his school and was on his way home to drop off his belongings. He then headed to Kampung Parit Mahang to send a friend home before getting involved in the accident. The body was taken to Tanjong Karang Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The lorry driver was uninjured. Azaharudin said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. He urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Kuala Selangor district police headquarters operations room at 03-32891222 or visit the nearest police station.

PKR veep says party polls allegations must be backed by proof, not ‘sentiment-driven arguments'

KUALA SELANGOR, May 13 — All allegations regarding the PKR election process, whether at the division or central leadership level, must be supported with evidence and not based on sentiment-driven arguments, said PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He said the Central Election Committee (JPP) had done its best to ensure that the leadership election for the 2025-2028 term is conducted fairly and transparently. 'The JPP has already conducted re-elections in several divisions where irregularities were found, and that itself is proof that the committee is trying its best. However, allegations on the matter continue to be made by those who are disappointed or still dissatisfied. 'A full report and audit of the division-level elections has already been presented to the central leadership recently,' he said at a press conference after officiating at the handover of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Project Package A and Package C here today. Meanwhile, in Kelantan, state PKR chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor has urged party members to be mature and not sow discord among leaders. 'Anyone can contest, but we should support leaders who are capable of driving the party forward, especially during state or national elections. 'In my view, PKR members are mature enough to vote and choose those who are truly qualified to lead,' he told reporters after the 'Jom Masuk U' programme and the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Excellence Awards Ceremony for the Tanah Merah parliamentary constituency today. The central leadership elections on May 23 will run from 8 am to 5 pm and will be conducted using two methods: physical voting by delegates of the Central Congress, the Central Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Congress and the Central Women's Congress, taking place at Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and Danga Bay Convention Centre in Johor Bahru. For Sabah and Sarawak, physical voting will take place at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) in Penampang and the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching. Regular and additional delegates for the Central, Central AMK and Central Women's Congresses will not need to attend in person as voting will be conducted online at the same date and time via the ADIL app. The PKR National Congress, including the AMK and Women's Congresses, is scheduled to be held from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru. — Bernama

MB: Selangor mulls banning sales of vapes, to be discussed by state govt council

KUALA SELANGOR, May 13 — The proposal to ban the sale of electronic cigarettes or vape in Selangor will be presented and discussed more thoroughly at the upcoming State Government Council meeting (MMKN), said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He said Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin had been instructed to do so following an integrated meeting held with the agencies involved. 'I have instructed that a paper be made and presented to MMKN for us to consider because any decision by the state government must be made comprehensively by looking at all aspects so that it can guarantee the health of current and future generations,' he said. He said this at a press conference after the handover ceremony of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Package A and Package C Project here today. Earlier, Jamaliah in a statement announced that the integrated meeting with the Menteri Besar's Office involved the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS), the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) and the Local Authorities (PBT). According to Jamaliah, the meeting was held to obtain a comprehensive overview of the enforcement, legal and socio-economic aspects related to the sale of vape. On April 24, the media reported that the Terengganu state government will enforce a ban on the sale of electronic cigarette products at all premises in the state starting August 1.
