Nimrat Kaur opens up about financial struggles before The Lunchbox: ‘There were days when I was very sad'
Actress Nimrat Kaur, who was recently seen on Jio Hotstar's show Kull, appeared on SCREEN's Dear Me Season 2. During the conversation, Nimrat reflected on her journey and opened up about her struggling phase. She spoke about dealing with uncertainty and the anxiety of not knowing when her next paycheck would come. Nimrat also admitted that she isn't a thick-skinned actor and often finds herself affected by judgments directed at her. Looking back at her struggles, Nimrat shared, 'Struggles are unending, and they will exist lifelong. Back when I started, the struggle was different. There was no surety that the reason for which I came to Mumbai would fructify. Will I be able to earn some money through acting? These were the initial questions. After I came here, I got some music videos in 2-3 months. I did a lot of ad films, and then Lunchbox came my way. I also did theater for 4-5 years. At different points in life, I had to struggle with different things.' The actor said, 'Sometimes I would get worried where my next pay cheque would come from? Am I good enough? Should I go back? Do people like seeing me in what I do? Before Lunchbox, there was a point where I didn't know what I would do ahead. While doing theater, there was a time when my bank balance had fallen very low. It was very difficult to understand where money would come from. There was a lot of fear, and returning home in a situation like that is a different kind of humiliation.' 'There were days when I was very sad, low, things were very difficult, challenging. I would cry, feel lonely, but there was a voice inside me that said, 'Don't give up,'' she added. When asked whether she had always been strong-headed or merely appeared that way, Nimrat responded, 'I don't do it publicly, but that doesn't mean I don't go through a hard time. To be in on somebody's vulnerability is a privilege; it's not something anyone can and should have access to.' A post shared by SCREEN (@ieentertainment) 'Anyway, the profession I am in puts me out in ways that sometimes I don't even want to. It's not something I wish for. It is a self-defense mechanism. I choose not to react, flare up, or express myself in an unwanted way. Some things remain forever, and thanks to the internet, it's like a landmine you are walking on. Anything you say can be blasted at any time. It can be made to look a certain way, and whatnot. As the audience, everybody is entitled to an opinion on my work, but everything else. It's not like I am completely immune to it or strong about it, or thick-skinned; in fact, I am the opposite. The complications of a childhood has made me a certain way. I choose my battles now. I don't want to take on issues that I have nothing to do with or that I can have no control over,' added Nimrat, during the interview held at Angry Sardar Restaurant in Andheri, Mumbai. Nimrat Kaur on fewer work opportunities in films: People thought I moved to US
Can assumptions of people cause a dent in your career? Actor Nimrat Kaur recently spoke exclusively to India Today about how the industry's perception of her choices and the assumption that she had moved to Los Angeles led to fewer opportunities coming her actor, who is currently basking in the success of her web series 'Kull,' also discussed the current state of the film industry. She shared that more than films not doing well at the box office, what truly worries her is not being able to work as often and as much as she would like see that there are so many capable and able actors around me who haven't been employed. But one needs to run the household, rents to pay, families have to be kept up, and bills need to be cleared. This is a profession at the end of the day. When things don't work, there is nervousness in the market, budgets are curtailed, and projects take longer to roll out. The need of the hour is for stuff to be made and released. When content gets created, it employs so many who have happily and crazily chosen to do this, and not walk on the straight path of a conventional job. So, something not doing well is a secondary worry for me," Nimrat Kaur said. Throughout her career, the actor has prioritised quality over quantity. When asked if her career choices had led the industry to view her differently, Nimrat said, "I do take responsibility for that. I always thought they knew I was here, but many believed that I was in LA (Los Angeles), that I had moved there. I love working abroad, but living in a foreign country is unthinkable for me. They also felt that I wouldn't want to do certain kinds of films, and I always wondered where these assumptions came from. Fortunately, I have been able to do stuff that suits me, and I feel grateful and lucky nonetheless."On a final note, the actor shared the genres that she wants to work in, starting with horror. "I would really like to do something like that, or even a horror comedy. I would also like to do a romantic comedy, or a lot of what I have already done. I want to attempt action, and something in line with The Test Case, which is absolutely close to my heart."Kull: The Legacy of the Raisingghs, also starring Amol Parashar, Ridhi Dogra and Gaurav Arora, is currently streaming on JioHotstar. 'I was taken seriously because of Irrfan Khan': Nimrat Kaur reveals how marriage questions stopped after The Lunchbox
Nimrat Kaur is comfortable being single, but that hasn't stopped so-called 'well-wishers' from repeatedly questioning her about marriage. These inquiries started when she was in her late twenties. It was only after the success of her 2013 film, The Lunchbox, that the unsolicited remarks finally quieted down. In a recent interview, Kaur shared that, like many other women, she had often faced questions about marriage. However, she said it was only after The Lunchbox that she began to receive validation and recognition. She added that she was taken seriously largely because of Irrfan Khan. In a chat with Showsha, Nimrat Kaur explained that she did not want to blame those who questioned her, as her work and herself were only taken seriously because Irrfan Khan was part of the project. Before The Lunchbox, she was often told that it was time for her to get married. However, those questions about marriage stopped after the film's success. Kaur said the movie helped convince people of her capabilities and finally earned her their appreciation. At the same time, she acknowledged that such people are influenced by societal conditioning, and therefore, she does not hold it against them. She also questioned the idea that marriage is the only way for women to feel 'settled.' She recalled that when she moved to Mumbai before 2005, people assumed she would eventually return home and live the life expected of a woman. Nimrat pointed out that whenever there is any sign that her career might not be progressing as expected, or that she isn't earning enough or achieving what others believe she should, people immediately tell her to get married and 'settle down,' as if she is considered 'unsettled' until she ties the knot. The Kull actor expressed that she is willing to wait rather than rush into a marriage that lacks meaning. Highlighting the number of 'farcical' marriages she has witnessed, she commented that people in such superficial unions seem more unsettled and troubled than a woman who is unmarried by choice. She urged others to simply let her be. She also noted that often it is those who have struggled to make their own bold decisions who impose their conditioned beliefs on others when they see them challenging traditional norms.
