Minority community students needs academic support: DC

Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara has emphasised the need for increased academic support for students from minority communities, particularly those struggling with language subjects. Speaking at a progress review meeting of the prime minister's new 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities for the year 2024–25 at the DC office on Tuesday, he called for targeted interventions, including special classes, to assist academically backward students. Kumara expressed concern over the unsatisfactory academic performance of students in minority residential schools. He urged school heads to take proactive measures to improve student outcomes. Highlighting attendance issues, Kumara directed officials to identify long-absent students, visit their homes, determine the reasons for their absence, and ensure their reintegration into the education system. For the academic year 2024–25, out of 1,216 minority students who appeared for the SSLC examination, only 651 passed—resulting in a pass percentage of just 53.5%.

Peace meeting held in Mandya village after temple entry dispute escalates

Mandya: A peace meeting was convened on Monday at Elechakanahalli village in Mandya taluk following communal tensions stemming from the alleged denial of entry to Dalits at the local Maramma Temple. Deputy commissioner Kumara and superintendent of police Mallikarjuna Baladandi presided over the meeting, attended by leaders and residents from both Dalit and upper-caste communities. The issue surfaced when upper-caste villagers reportedly prevented Dalits from entering the temple, leading to clashes between the two groups. In response, taluk officials temporarily shut the temple for both communities and imposed heightened security to prevent further unrest. Both groups subsequently placed separate locks on the temple doors, symbolising the deepening divide. Despite initial attempts at reconciliation, efforts to broker peace proved unsuccessful. Tensions escalated further on June 3 when a car belonging to a Dalit resident was allegedly vandalised by members of the upper-caste community. A formal complaint was later filed against six individuals in connection with the incident. During Monday's peace meeting, community leaders—including several women—requested 15 days to find an amicable solution to the conflict. In the meantime, police have intensified security measures in the village and around the temple to maintain order. Authorities remain hopeful that the village elders and community representatives will use this period to arrive at a peaceful resolution and restore harmony.
