What's the best way to spend 1,000 yen at Kura Sushi?【Japan Super Budget Dining】

Fish, noodles, and heresy are all on the table as our panel of hngry reporters puts together 10 different meals for 1,000 yen or less. Our Japan Super Budget Dining panel is coming off two straight meaty meals, having made recent visits to the Mos Burger and Matsuya chains for hamburgers and gyudon (beef bowls), respectively. So today we're giving beef a break and instead heading to Kura Sushi, or Kurazushi, as it's pronounced by locals in Japan. Kura Sushi is one of Japan's most popular kaiten sushi/conveyor belt sushi chains, and among that section of the dining scene it's known as an especially budget-friendly tasty place. So, as we do in this series, we gave each of our panel members a budge ot 1,000 yen (US$6.90) and told them to put together the best meal they could from Kura Sushi's menu. ▼ Takamichi Furusawa's 'Kura Sushi Beginner' set (920 yen) ● Salted matured tuna (115 yen) ● Marinated matured tuna (115 yen) ● Salmon (115 yen) ● Umadare sauce salmon (115 yen) ● Kisslip squid (115 yen) ● Pacific flying squid (115 yen) ● Natural dashi udon noodles (230 yen) 'This is actually my first time to eat at Kura Sushi. Since I don't have any experience with their menu, I went with things I saw being promoted on their website and in-restaurant signs and posters, plus a few things I always order at kaiten sushi restaurants. But when I broke up rotation between tuna, salmon, and squid, I was shocked by how good the udon's dashi bonito stock broth. The combo of sushi and udon is like a revelation, and I can't believe I found noodles that taste this good at a sushi restaurant.' ▼ Go Hatori's 'Shrimp All the Way' set (945 yen) ● Shrimp (115 yen) ● Shirim with avocado (150 yen) ● Seared gratin-style shrimp with mayo (170 yen) ● Seard shrimp with cheese (170 yen) ● Tempura shrimp nigiri sushi (170 yen) ● Tempura shrimp sushi roll (170 yen) 'I regularly make whole kaiten sushi meals out of nothing but cooked shrimp sushi, so I went down that path again, grabbing both some conventional and some unorthodox plates. But even this isn't all the cooked shrimp options Kura Sushi has!' ▼ Masanuki Sunakoma's 'Super Honor Roll' set (995 yen) ● Kaisen mixed seafood gunkan (115 yen) ● Salted matured tuna (115 yen) ● Salmon (115 yen) ● Squid with oba (Japanese basil) (115 yen) ● Special of the day tuna with green onion gunkan (115 yen) ● Seared bonito without rice (190 yen) ● Natural dashi udon noodles (230 yen) 'You've got to keep your eyes on the conveyor while you're at Kura Sushi, since the daily specials, like the three-piece tuna with green onion plate, might not be on the menu. Picking that up made my stomach and my soul feel very happy.' ▼ Yuichiro Wasai's 'Drawing Out the Full Potential of Inexpensive Sushi' set (990 yen) ● Salted matured tuna (115 yen) ● Matured tuna (115 yen) ● Salted marinated yellowtail (115 yen) ● Sered bonito with yuzu citrus salt (115 yen) ● Yuzu citrus flounder (115 yen) ● Kisslip squid (115 yen) ● Iberian pork (130 yen) ● Corn fritters (170 yen) 'There's no getting around it: a lot of my favorite types of sushi are expensive. There're exceptions, though, with less expensive ingredients with a little extra effort put in to maximize their potential in how they're prepared or seasoned. Basically, cheap ingredients made to taste better than they otherwise would. My selection is kind of heavy on salty flavors overall, but there're some sweet notes too in the pork and corn, making every plate great. ▼ Yoshio's 'Cheap but Ultimate' set (920 yen) ● Salted matured tuna (115 yen) ● Salted marinated yellowtail ( yen) ● Large-serving scallop sushi (115 yen) ● Yuzu citrus salt bonito (115 yen) ● Salmon (115 yen) ● Pangasius (115 yen) ● Mackerel (115 yen) ● Sardine (115 yen) 'When I go to kaiten sushi, I'm all about maxing out on the affordably priced stuff. The bonito and sardine in particular were super thick and fresh, especially for the low price, so I totally recommend getting some of those.' ▼ Ahiruneko's 'Ultimate Kura Sushi Alcoholic Drink Side Order' set (930 yen) ● Maguro yukke (tuna with egg) (130 yen) ● Chanja (spicy cod innards) (115 yen) ● Marinated salmon (115 yen) ● Small-size goro chicken fried chicken (150 yen) ● Gin lemon soda (420 yen) 'Gunkan (battleship-shape) sushi is a little more expensive that regular nigiri sushi, but it makes for a great side order snack to have with alcoholic drinks, and since gin with lemon and soda water is something you don't often see at chain kaiten sushi restaurants, I wasn't going to pass that up. The fried chicken is the finishing touch that gives the whole thing just the right balance of flavors.' ▼ Takashi Harada's 'Orthodox Chawanmushi and Sushi' set (995 yen) ● Chawanmushi savory egg custard (230 yen) ● Salted matured tuna (115 yen) ● Matured marinated tuna (115 yen) ● Salmon (115 yen) ● Shrimp (115 yen) ● Large-serving scallop sushi (115 yen) ● Aji (horse mackerel) (190 yen) 'Obviously I wanted to focus on sushi, but the chawanmushi looked to good not to order. Even with that, I still had a little extra room left over in the budget, so I splurged on a plate of aji.' ▼ Mr. Sato's 'Weekdays-only Set Meal' (980 yen) ● Kaisen mixed seafood bowl (600 yen) ● Miso soup (150 yen yen) ● Chawanmushi savory egg custard (230 yen) 'On weekdays only, until 5 p.m. Kura Sushi has a special lunch kaisen bowl, so I used that as the foundation to build my meal on. It's tasty, filling, and more convenient than having to order a bunch of different things.' ▼ Mariko Ohanabatake's 'Entertaining Heresy' set (990 yen) ● Sukiyaki-style gunkan (115 yen) ● Squid with okura gunkan (115 yen) ● Salted tuna (115 yen) ● Pangasius with lime salt (115 yen) ● Natural dashi udon noodles (230 yen) ● Corn fritters (170 yen) ● Warabi mochi (130 yen) 'Kaiten sushi is supposed to be fun. They've got all sorts of things on the menu thatd be considered heresy at more traditional sushi restaurants, things like 'sukiyaki sushi' and sushi seasoned with lime salt. So I got creative, and also treated myself to some jiggly warabi mochi for dessert.' ▼ Seiji Nakazawa's 'Actually Kura Sushi has Crazy Good Dandan Noodles' set (910 yen) ● Dandan noodles (490 yen) ● Two orders of beef kalbi short rib (230 yen each) ● Chashu pork croquette (190 yen) 'I see a lot of other people choosing udon to be part of their meal, and yeah, Kura Sushi does a great job with it. But I'd pass on the udon and get their tantanmen/dandan noodles instead. Kura Sushi makes their own broth for this in-house too, and it's nt just spicy, but nice and rich too, and I powered it up to the limit by adding extra beef and pork to my bowl.' And with that, the Japan Super Budget Dining panel is off to bask in their food comas. We'll see you all again next time, and in the meantime, if you're craving Kura Sushi but have a little more money to spend, the chain now has a high-end sister restaurant open in Tokyo too. Kura Sushi, BJ's, Red Robin, Tapestry, and E.W. Scripps Shares Skyrocket, What You Need To Know

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after the major indices rebounded (Nasdaq +2.0%, S&P 500 +1.5%) as President Trump postponed the planned 50% tariff on European Union imports, shifting the start date to July 9, 2025. Companies with substantial business ties to Europe likely had some relief as the delay reduced near-term cost pressures and preserved cross-border demand. The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Among others, the following stocks were impacted: Sit-Down Dining company Kura Sushi (NASDAQ:KRUS) jumped 6.2%. Is now the time to buy Kura Sushi? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Sit-Down Dining company BJ's (NASDAQ:BJRI) jumped 5%. Is now the time to buy BJ's? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Sit-Down Dining company Red Robin (NASDAQ:RRGB) jumped 6.6%. Is now the time to buy Red Robin? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Apparel and Accessories company Tapestry (NYSE:TPR) jumped 5.5%. Is now the time to buy Tapestry? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Broadcasting company E.W. Scripps (NASDAQ:SSP) jumped 7%. Is now the time to buy E.W. Scripps? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. E.W. Scripps's shares are extremely volatile and have had 92 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 8 months ago when the stock gained 24.1% on the news that the company announced that it would end its 24/7 national news broadcast service after November 15, 2024, due to challenges hitting its revenue target from linear television. The business planned to focus on digital and streaming platforms. While the move means SSP would scale back its reach in the short term (with over 200 job cuts expected), the stock's reaction suggested the market liked the decision to capitalize on more promising growth opportunities. E.W. Scripps is down 10.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $2.25 per share, it is trading 41.7% below its 52-week high of $3.87 from July 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of E.W. Scripps's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $239.60. Today's young investors likely haven't read the timeless lessons in Gorilla Game: Picking Winners In High Technology because it was written more than 20 years ago when Microsoft and Apple were first establishing their supremacy. But if we apply the same principles, then enterprise software stocks leveraging their own generative AI capabilities may well be the Gorillas of the future. Kura Sushi opens new high-end revolving bar restaurant in Tokyo

Conveyor belt sushi goes upmarket with premium fish you won't get at regular chains. When it comes to conveyor belt sushi chains, Kura Sushi is one of the top four in Japan, alongside Kappa Sushi, Sushiro, and Hama Sushi. Out of these four, it's also one of the most innovative, keen to break away from the pack with new menu items and ventures, and its latest offering is a series of high-end branches known as 'Muten Kura'. 'Muten' translates as 'additive-free,' indicating that the restaurant doesn't use chemical seasonings, artificial sweeteners, colourings, or preservatives, with a focus on natural food and freshness. These high-end branches of Kura Sushi were previously only located in four locations, all in suburban areas of the Kansai region in and around Osaka. But now, Muten Kura is finally making its debut in Tokyo, in a prime location about a minute's walk from Naka-meguro Station. We were invited to a media preview ahead of the restaurant's official 29 May opening, so we got the train to Naka-meguro Station and took West Exit 2, navigating the maze of narrow alleys until we arrived at the location. ▼ The branch is located on the second floor. Kura Sushi is known for its bright and bustling atmosphere, with families at booths and noise from the clatter of empty dishes that diners place into the tableside receptacle for a chance to win a gacha prize. However, the vibe at this upmarket branch is entirely different, with a dimly lit interior, quiet background music, and more spacious seating. ▼ The counter seats can also be made to be semi-private with tabletop partitions. ▼ The booth seats also offer an increased sense of privacy with pull-down screens. The interior certainly gives off an upmarket vibe, and so too does the menu, with an overwhelming selection of alcoholic drinks to choose from. Whiskey fans will be particularly pleased with solid offerings like Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Nikka Session, and Nikka Frontier. ▼ In our opinion, Nikka Frontier is the best value whiskey in the 1,000 yen (US$7.01) range right now. For sushi aficionados who prefer a sake pairing with their meals, sure-fire hits like Kubota and Dassai are on the menu, and there's even a Junmai Sake Tasting Set for 980 yen. ▼The Junmai Tasting Set. Staff say all the drinks have been chosen for their compatibility with menu items — the Harushika is particularly good with seafood, Kizakura with tempura, and Kubota with meat sushi. It's rare to find this much variety on the drinks menu at a revolving sushi restaurant, but of course these are just a warm-up for the main event, which is… ▼ … the sushi. Even the menu display looks fancier than what we're used to, with a huge amount to choose from, including sashimi and tempura platters and sushi with decorative knife cuts and brushed-on dollops of dashi soy sauce. One highly recommended item is the 'Fresh Bluefin Tuna Nakaochi Set' (1,480 yen), which is only served only in limited quantities on days when it's available. To eat this unusual dish, diners need to scoop the meat off the bones with a spoon and eat it with rice, seaweed, and wasabi. There's also fresh wasabi (280 yen), served in a plate with a sharkskin grater for you to grate yourself. ▼ The wasabi is fun to grate and can be used freely on whatever dishes you choose. ▼ Those who don't want to work for their wasabi can enjoy the pre-grated version on the table. Another highlight on the menu is the 'Hokkaido Shako', or mantis shrimp, which is a prized delicacy not often found at sushi restaurants. When you do see it on the menu it's usually a limited-time special but here it's a mainstay, and relatively affordable at 630 yen. Then there's the 'Hokkaido Matsukawa Karei' (580 yen), with an irresistibly sweet, chewy white flesh that's packed with umami. This is another dish you won't find at conveyor-belt sushi restaurants, as the population of this particular flounder was once in decline but has only recently been recovered. ▼ Other recommended items are the straw-seared bonito (570 yen)… …and 'Fukui Asa-dore' ('Fukui Morning Catch'), a series that depends entirely on the day's catch, sourced from Fukui Prefecture. Kura Sushi has a special contract with fishing boats in Fukui where they buy the entire boat's catch — the boats leave the port at 3 a.m., land the catch at 5 a.m., process it at a factory near the port, and then put it on the first Hokuriku Shinkansen from Kanazawa Station to this store at Nakameguro, delivering super fresh fish like yellowtail, sea bream, kelp grouper, and Spanish mackerel. Tuna fans will fall in love with the 'Fresh Bluefin Tuna Three-Piece Set' (980 yen), which features decorative knife cuts and dashi soy sauce lightly brushed on top, making it feel like you're in a top-class restaurant. Plus, the tuna is farm-raised in Uwajima and transported to Nakameguro at top speed without ever being frozen, giving you supreme freshness. ▼ The Three-Piece Set contains lean, medium fatty, and fatty tuna… and they're all melt-in-the-mouth delicious. To celebrate the grand opening in Tokyo, the store will also be offering two items from 29 May to 8 June — 'Mediterranean Bluefin Tuna Medium Fatty' (380 yen) and 'Mediterranean Bluefin Tuna Fatty' (580 yen) — for just 100 yen each, in limited quantities every day. ▼ So now's the time to get in and try as much as you can. With fish delivered fresh every day, this is one conveyor belt chain that's a cut above the competition, and is definitely worth a visit. According to staff, the sushi selection gets better towards the evening — sometimes the day's catch isn't available until later in the day — so you'll want to put this in your itinerary for dinner, where you can enjoy the refined ambience, and a few tipples with your sushi too. Spotting Winners: Kura Sushi (NASDAQ:KRUS) And Sit-Down Dining Stocks In Q1

Quarterly earnings results are a good time to check in on a company's progress, especially compared to its peers in the same sector. Today we are looking at Kura Sushi (NASDAQ:KRUS) and the best and worst performers in the sit-down dining industry. Sit-down restaurants offer a complete dining experience with table service. These establishments span various cuisines and are renowned for their warm hospitality and welcoming ambiance, making them perfect for family gatherings, special occasions, or simply unwinding. Their extensive menus range from appetizers to indulgent desserts and wines and cocktails. This space is extremely fragmented and competition includes everything from publicly-traded companies owning multiple chains to single-location mom-and-pop restaurants. The 11 sit-down dining stocks we track reported a mixed Q1. As a group, revenues beat analysts' consensus estimates by 0.7% while next quarter's revenue guidance was 2.3% below. Luckily, sit-down dining stocks have performed well with share prices up 17.4% on average since the latest earnings results. Known for its conveyor belt that transports dishes to diners, Kura Sushi (NASDAQ:KRUS) is a chain of sushi restaurants serving traditional Japanese fare with a touch of modernity and technology. Kura Sushi reported revenues of $64.89 million, up 13.3% year on year. This print was in line with analysts' expectations, but overall, it was a slower quarter for the company with a significant miss of analysts' EBITDA estimates and a miss of analysts' same-store sales estimates. Hajime Uba, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kura Sushi, stated, 'We had a very productive second quarter, making headway on the new market opportunities represented by our success in Bakersfield, building out our IP pipeline, and beginning testing or rollout of several systems projects that have long been in development. New restaurant openings are going exceptionally smoothly, with 11 units opened to-date and another six under construction. While the inclement weather was an unexpected sales pressure, we're pleased overall with the quarter due to the great progress we've made across our initiatives.' Kura Sushi delivered the weakest full-year guidance update of the whole group. Interestingly, the stock is up 65.3% since reporting and currently trades at $68.38. Read our full report on Kura Sushi here, it's free. Founded by Norman Brinker in Dallas, Brinker International (NYSE:EAT) is a casual restaurant chain that operates the Chili's, Maggiano's Little Italy, and It's Just Wings banners. Brinker International reported revenues of $1.43 billion, up 27.2% year on year, outperforming analysts' expectations by 2.6%. The business had an exceptional quarter with a solid beat of analysts' EBITDA estimates and an impressive beat of analysts' same-store sales estimates. Brinker International achieved the highest full-year guidance raise among its peers. Although it had a fine quarter compared its peers, the market seems unhappy with the results as the stock is down 6% since reporting. It currently trades at $151. Is now the time to buy Brinker International? Access our full analysis of the earnings results here, it's free. Based on a nautical reference to the first work shift aboard a ship, First Watch (NASDAQ:FWRG) is a chain of breakfast and brunch restaurants whose menu is heavily-focused on eggs and griddle items such as pancakes. First Watch reported revenues of $282.2 million, up 16.4% year on year, in line with analysts' expectations. It was a softer quarter as it posted full-year EBITDA guidance missing analysts' expectations. As expected, the stock is down 13.2% since the results and currently trades at $16.14. Read our full analysis of First Watch's results here. With locations often featuring Western-inspired decor, Texas Roadhouse (NASDAQ:TXRH) is an American restaurant chain specializing in Southern-style cuisine and steaks. Texas Roadhouse reported revenues of $1.45 billion, up 9.6% year on year. This result surpassed analysts' expectations by 0.6%. Zooming out, it was a mixed quarter as it also logged same-store sales in line with analysts' estimates but a miss of analysts' EBITDA estimates. The stock is up 9.4% since reporting and currently trades at $189. Read our full, actionable report on Texas Roadhouse here, it's free. Founded in 1978 in California, BJ's Restaurants (NASDAQ:BJRI) is a chain of restaurants whose menu features classic American dishes, often with a twist. BJ's reported revenues of $348 million, up 3.2% year on year. This print was in line with analysts' expectations. It was a very strong quarter as it also put up an impressive beat of analysts' EPS estimates and a solid beat of analysts' EBITDA estimates. The stock is up 28% since reporting and currently trades at $42.84. Read our full, actionable report on BJ's here, it's free. Thanks to the Fed's rate hikes in 2022 and 2023, inflation has been on a steady path downward, easing back toward that 2% sweet spot. Fortunately (miraculously to some), all this tightening didn't send the economy tumbling into a recession, so here we are, cautiously celebrating a soft landing. The cherry on top? Recent rate cuts (half a point in September 2024, a quarter in November) have propped up markets, especially after Trump's November win lit a fire under major indices and sent them to all-time highs. However, there's still plenty to ponder — tariffs, corporate tax cuts, and what 2025 might hold for the economy. Want to invest in winners with rock-solid fundamentals?
