Tavarekere lake in Kushalnagar faces encroachment, pollution
Madikeri: Tavarekere lake in Kushalnagar is experiencing fresh encroachment and unchecked water contamination challenges, prompting local residents to call for its safeguarding.
Despite allocated funds for lake conservation and improvement, no substantial progress was observed.
Tavarekere lake is a significant landmark in Kushalnagar. Despite conservationists' persistent appeals for preservation, authorities' indifference jeopardises the lake's survival, they stated.
In 2018, substantial encroachment was halted after the deputy commissioner intervened. Development and protection plans were proposed.
However, despite numerous reports about encroachment and pollution, authorities remained unresponsive, said Chandramohan from Cauvery Swachata Andolana. He noted that local environmentalists notified officials when the lakebed was encroached. "We requested the establishment of a protection committee for lake preservation.
Our efforts resulted in fund allocation for lake development," he said.
The lake continues experiencing contamination whilst its boundaries face gradual encroachment, residents stated. "Untreated waste from nearby commercial establishments and sewage directly enters the lake through drainage systems, resulting in severe contamination," Chandramohan said.
The Kushalnagar Urban Development Authority said Rs 3 crore was allocated for lake development and preservation. It will be taken up after the tender, the urban body stated.
