Kutubna Cultural Center presents 'Abstract Art Exhibition' – A Collective Exploration of Form, Color, and Emotion
Dubai, UAE: With its Abstract Art Exhibition, Kutubna Cultural Center invites viewers to explore abstract art as a language of emotion, memory, and form. Featuring over 25 works by 15 artists from 12 countries, this vibrant group exhibition brings together diverse voices, each interpreting abstraction through their own personal and cultural lens. The artworks explore themes such as identity, nature, memory, and human relationships, expressed through a range of media, techniques, and visual rhythms. Each piece invites the viewer to connect with meaning beyond language. A special section of the exhibition is dedicated to youth artists, whose energetic compositions, vibrant palettes, and fresh perspectives offer a glimpse into the world of abstract expression from youth perspective. All participating artists are currently based in the UAE, representing Algeria, Armenia, Canada, India, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Russia, Sudan, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates. The featured artists include Miska Mohmmed Abdelmajeed Mohmmed, Ashraf Abdelmonim Mohamed Ibrahim, Ahmed Amine Aitouche (AKA Sneakhotep), Aras Bildik, Lina Al Dabbagh, Salama Almazrouei, Zeena Al-Zubi, Tumpa Banerjee, Hasmik Chakhalyan, Alina O'Dwyer, Aya Qubbaj, Hend Rashed, Haafiza Ajaz Sayed, Irudhayanathan Thangaraj, and Youness Siraj Mounir (AKA Yun K). The opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 6:00 PM at Kutubna Cultural Center, located in Madina Avenues, Nadd Al Hamar, Dubai. Guests are invited to explore the exhibition and immerse themselves in a rich and diverse selection of abstract works. Kutubna Cultural Center to present Women in Contemporary Arab Art
Kutubna Cultural Center, Dubai's newest independent bookstore and cultural hub, is soon launching Women in Contemporary Arab Art (Apr. 26 - May 18). Sponsored by International House Real Estate Project Management L.L.C. and Al Bait Al Duwaliy Real Estate, the show offers a powerful perspective on how Arab women have been depicted in modern and contemporary art, through decades. 'The display features revealing stories of strength, beauty, resilience and cultural transformation outlined by renowned regional artists,' says the Center. The works on display are drawn from the private collection of International House Group, collected over a period of 25 years. The exhibition presents 35 original works from across the Arab world, including paintings on canvas and paper, highlighting both classic and experimental styles from the 20th and early 21st centuries. Masterworks by celebrated artists Louay Kayali (Syria), Salah Taher (Egypt), Adham Wanly (Egypt) and Khaled al-Jader (Iraq), offer striking, emotional portrayals of Arab women in both public and private spheres. In this context, Women in Contemporary Arab Art invites its viewers to reflect on the evolving presence of women in Arab history. The artworks also showcase how artists have shaped cultural memory and identity through their individual artistic depiction of the female form. Spanning more than a century, the exhibit takes visitors on a visual journey that explores different experiences, challenges and triumphs of women in the Middle East. The official opening reception will be in the form of a vibrant cultural happening, with the evening welcoming key figures from the UAE's art and cultural scene. We take pride in having a role in introducing our community to Arab artists whose work is recognised and respected internationally — artists whose work is breathtaking and whose impact on the art and museum scenes in the Arab world are undeniable. We want to make sure that children and young adults grow up around Arab art, knowing about the Arab masters and their important roles in their societies and in the world of art.' Depictions of banal daily struggles and the social and physical deprivation of the masses intertwine the artwork of Syrian painter Louay Kayali, manifested during his prolific yet short-lived career (he died at age 44). Highlighting the individual struggles evident on the fringe of larger socio-political realities in the Arab region, Kayali's artwork provides a window into the lives of the deprived majority. One of his works, Woman Sewing, captures a fleeting moment of a seamstress' ascetic routine of stitching clothing. Salah Taher was an Egyptian painter and educator. His philosophical approach in abstraction left an enduring mark on modern Egyptian art. The art and the career of Adham Wanly reflects the society and the history of modern Egypt. Living in the cosmopolitan city of Alexandria under a pro-British monarchy, he could enrich his knowledge and techniques of Western culture and art. He benefitted from this, and created works related to the cultural and art European scene, but also inherent to the local culture in Egypt. Iraqi artist Khaled al-Jader is seen as a precursor to modern abstract art in Iraq. He was an active participant in the Iraqi modern art movement. Located in the Nadd Al Hamar district, the independent bookstore and cultural hub will display 35 original works spanning modern and contemporary movements across the Arab world. The collection draws from the private archive of International House Group, built over the past 25 years, and features work by seminal artists such as Louay Kayali (Syria), Salah Taher (Egypt), Adham Wanly (Egypt), and Khaled Aljader (Iraq). The artworks explore both public and domestic representations of women, reflecting evolving cultural attitudes and offering insight into gender, identity, and social transformation. Ranging from classic to experimental styles, the pieces span over a century of artistic expression, shedding light on the ways Arab women have been perceived and portrayed by some of the region's most influential painters. 'The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the role of women in Arab history and how art contributes to our collective memory,' said Shatha Almutawa, founder and director of Kutubna Cultural Center. 'We want to ensure future generations are raised with access to Arab art and are aware of the masters who helped shape it.' The official opening on April 26th will feature live music and is expected to draw leading figures from the UAE's cultural and creative sectors. Kutubna Cultural Center exhibition eyes scene behind stage & screen
Muhammad Yusuf, Features Writer Kutubna Cultural Center, Dubai's newest independent bookstore and cultural space, has launched The Art behind the Stars, an exhibition that attempts to bridge the glamour of international stars from the cinema and music worlds and the depth of fine art portraiture. The collection presents 22 artworks by Bahraini artist Jamal Abdul Rahim and features portraits of legendary figures from Hollywood and the Arab world, including Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim, among others (Feb. 15 — Mar. 16). The display delves into the world of celebrity, through the lens of artistry and showcases portraits of international stars from the world of entertainment, each offering an individual perspective on culture, identity, experience, and memories. The artworks offer a glimpse into the human side of the stage and screen legends and cultural icons, by looking behind the scenes. Each portrait provides a window into cultural memories, exploring how the iconic figures have shaped collective identity. The show is Jamal Abdul Rahim's homage to the artists who still resonate with global audiences and have left their marks on many lives. The artist's journey in the art world has allowed him the freedom to experiment and stretch the boundaries of conventional image-making. He spent years studying the works of portrait masters, honing techniques to bring a modern touch and a fresh perspective to traditional methods. The exhibition not only celebrates artistic expression, but also fosters dialogue about the power of portraiture in bridging cultural divides, thus making a significant contribution to contemporary art discourse. Rahim is well known for his bright colour palette and portraiture, especially his portraits of Umm Kulthum. Shatha Almutawa, Founder and Director of Kutubna Cultural Center, said: "The Art behind the Stars marks our first exhibition in 2025 and the first solo exhibition by a Bahraini artist at the center. We are proud to be able to share Jamal A. Rahim's works and celebrate his accomplishments, thanks to the valuable support from our exhibition partners, the International House Group and Al Bait Al Duwaliy Real Estate. We are planning a variety of cultural events at Kutubna, and some new additions. This year, we will also host a philosophy lecture series, writing workshops, and events for parents with their young children, such as 'Philosophy in the Playroom' and 'Poetry in the Playroom'. Art workshops for people of all ages continue weekly at Kutubna, along with events for kids and teens.' Jamal Abdul Rahim was born in Al Muharraq in Bahrain in 1965, and began life as a feisty individual in a Muharraqi environment. He was strongly attached to the sea, after spending most of his childhood, enjoying its beauty. His tryst with art started when he returned from India in 1984, with a diploma in engineering drawing. He became a member of the Bahrain Arts Society (BAS) in 1988, when he met the distinguished Bahraini artist, A. Jabbar Ghadban. Rahim was fascinated by Ghadban's techniques in etching and printing, and went on to learn the basics of these skills. His first solo exhibition was held in 1990 at the BAS exhibition hall. He has subsequently held exhibitions in Kuwait, Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Norway, Holland, Japan, Slovenia, Spain, and France, to name a few locations.
