When Mukul Dev Was Replaced By Saif In Kya Kehna, Was Asked To Return Signing Fee

Last Updated: Mukul Dev, who debuted in 1996 with Dastak, was replaced by Saif Ali Khan in Kya Kehna. He passed away on May 23 at 54. Before life dimmed its spotlight on Mukul Dev, he was a face filmmakers couldn't ignore. Mukul made his debut in 1996 with Dastak and was soon seen as one of the rising stars of his time. But behind the promise of fame was a road filled with bumps. The actor unfortunately passed away on May 23 at the age of 54. Did you know Mukul was originally cast opposite Preity Zinta in Ramesh Taurani's Kya Kehna? It was a film that would go on to become a much-loved hit. But fate had other plans. After reportedly failing to reach the set on time, Mukul was removed from the film and replaced by Saif Ali Khan. He was even asked to return the Rs 50,000 he had received as a signing fee. While talking to Showsha, Ramesh had said, 'Actually, Saif wasn't supposed to do Kya Kehna. An actor called Mukul Dev was going to do it, but he didn't show up on set on the first day of the shoot. At around 11 am, someone from the production called him up to ask where he was, and he said that he was on his way. They called again at noon, and he said that he's outside RK Studio, but he never showed up." Producer Ramesh Taurani had once recalled a turning point in Mukul Dev's career. After Mukul failed to show up on the set of Kya Kehna, Ramesh called an urgent meeting with his team at his Andheri office to decide the next steps. As conversations inside veered toward replacing Mukul with Saif Ali Khan, the actor himself was waiting silently outside. Mukul had come hoping to explain. He said, 'Our sets were ready, we had to start shooting. I decided to call Saif. I asked if he would be free to meet in the evening, and he said that he would. That's when I was told that Mukul Dev had come by to the office. I said that I don't have any interest in speaking to him, and that he should go back home. But he waited outside. When we were leaving to meet Saif, I spoke to him." After waiting outside producer Ramesh Taurani's office for hours, Mukul Dev was finally called in only to be told he was no longer part of Kya Kehna. Ramesh said Mukul had broken their trust and asked him to return the Rs 50,000 signing amount. The film later became a big hit, with Saif Ali Khan replacing Mukul as the lead. Directed by Kundan Shah, Kya Kehna also starred Preity Zinta, Chandrachur Singh, Farida Jalal, and Anupam Kher. First Published:

The actor was supposed to play the lead role opposite Preity Zinta in producer Ramesh Taurani's film Kya Kehna. However, he was fired from the project and replaced by Saif Ali Khan after he failed to reach the set on time. Mukul passed away on May 23 at the age of 54. They called again at noon, and he said that he's outside RK Studio, but he never showed up.' Ramesh also revealed that after Mukul didn't reach the set of the film, he decided to have a meeting with his team in his Andheri office to discuss the action plan. He shared that while he was discussing casting Saif in the film with his team, Mukul was waiting for him outside his office. Ramesh said that Mukul wanted to explain his absence from the film's set, but he didn't give him a second chance and refused to speak with him. When we were leaving to meet Saif, I spoke to him.' After waiting for Ramesh, the two finally met, and Mukul was told that his services were no longer needed. He was informed that he had broken the trust between them and must return his signing amount of Rs 50,000. Kya Kehna was a massive hit at the box office. Saif Ali Khan reveals that young Sara Ali Khan visited him on the sets of ‘Kya Kehna' and the cabbies refused to take money 'because she was so cute'

Released in the early 2000s, Saif Ali Khan and Priety Zinta starrer ' Kya Kehna ' turned 25 on Monday. The story that was packed with love, drama, courage, and more, even after more than two decades, is close to Saif Ali Khan's heart. However, did you know that Saif was never a fan of the said movie's title? Saif Ali Khan got 'Kya Kehna' because another actor didn't show up! 'I never liked the title. And I'm saying it for the first time. Odd way I got the film,' said Saif in an exclusive conversation. 'Ramesh Tauraniji and Kundan Shahji came in saying they had a problem. Their actor had left! And the slot was empty. I had to report the next day in my own clothes,' he revealed while sharing how he bagged the movie in the first place. Further, speaking about his character arc, Saif said, 'Kundan made it all deep! The motivations and actions of my character, Rahul Modi. And Kundan was so clever! A great combination of an intellectual mind and a commercial script.' He continued, 'Kundanji added a death wish, a streak of pain to my character. Made it deeper than just a bad boy: he made him a troubled boy. Good music also helped. Kya Kehna was a surprise success.' Kareena Kapoor Khan points out one similarity between Saif Ali Khan's kids Sara Ali Khan, Ibrahim and Taimur The unfortunate accident and the pool of blood on the sets of 'Kya Kehna' In the movie 'Kya Kehna', Saif Ali Khan actually gave his sweat and BLOOD, as he had a very serious accident on the set. Speaking about the same, the actor said, 'I had a bike stunt to do and had an accident. My head split open on a rock.' One would wonder why the star did his own stunt, where usually such acts are performed by body doubles. 'They had a dupe, but he didn't look like me at all. So I tried the jump. It seemed okay on the beach. But on wet grass…,' he explained. 'I'm lying there in a pool of blood, and some people want to take pictures. My co-star and buddy, Preity Zinta, took me to Breach Candy to Dr Pandya. He saved my life. Another memory, though a far less dangerous one,' continued the actor. The story of the leather pants Sharing another memory, or let's say a funny memory, Saif told us, 'While filming a song, I tore my pants. Leather black pants. You can see it in the film. Miss Zinta was always a buddy, and she made it fun.' Honey Irani on being overpowered by Javed Akhtar's screenwriting: 'My storytelling is different, but I truly admire him'

Honey Irani reflected on 22 years since her directorial debut Armaan, sharing insights on the film's making, her journey as a screenwriter, and cherished memories from her childhood acting days. Excerpts... It's been 22 years since your film as a director? I must say that I was very lucky to get a very nice producer like Dinesh Gandhi to back me as a first-time director, and to have a dream cast like Amitji, Anil Kapoor , Randhir Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Gracy Singh, and Amir Bashir. Music by Shankar-Ehsaan and Loy. Lyrics and dialogues by Javed Saab and cinematography by Ravi Varman: it was his first feature film. And then I had Reema Kagti as my first AD. What more could I have asked for? Nothing more, I guess? by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: 1 simple trick to get all TV channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo I enjoyed the entire process as everybody was so professional and extremely nice and gave their very best. I must say thank you to them all for their support. Armaan is about healthcare, what made you pick this subject? I wanted to make this film because I have a lot of respect for this profession. I myself wanted to be a doctor but that was not to be. So I guess that was why I chose this subject. The film was appreciated and did well at the box office, but not as well as I wished it would. Why didn't you direct another film? Then I got back into writing scripts, I guess time passed and my children started making films and I was enjoying seeing them doing so well. And once again feeling really lucky and grateful for having such hardworking and talented kids. Did you ever feel overpowered as a screenwriter for Javed Saab's presence? No, I was never overpowered by Javed Saab's writing as my way of storytelling is very different from his. Yes, I do think he is one of the best screenplay and dialogue writers we have. I certainly admire him. You have written some very commendable screenplays, which is your favourite? I would say that Lamhe is very close to my heart, as it was a very different story and again the way it was cast and directed was just amazing. And so is Kya Kehna, Aaina, Darr, Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai, and Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai. I really enjoyed writing them. You and your sister Daisy had a successful innings as child actors. How do you look back on those days? Daisy and I had a great career as child actors. And I certainly consider myself very lucky to have worked with legends like Dilip Kumar Saab, Meena Kumari Ji, Sunil Dutt Ji, Rajendra Kumar Ji, Ashok Kumar Ji, Raj Kapoor Ji, Motilal Ji, Balraj Sahni Ji, Nutan Ji, Madhubala Ji, Nanda Ji, Kishore Kumar Ji, Mala Sinha Ji. What more can one ask for? Anything from your past that you would like to change? Honestly, nothing. Bollywood star who refused ₹600 crore: This actor challenged Mumbai underworld, rivalled Aishwarya, Rani, but quit at 32

In the early and mid-2000s, when Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji, and Kareena Kapoor were vying to be the top stars in Hindi cinema, there was one name that they always had to contend with. Preity Zinta may not have been the highest-paid star of her times, but always found herself in the biggest hits and most-talked about films. At her peak, she was among the top Bollywood heroines of her generation. But she was much more, as one of the only Bollywood stars to stand up to the Mumbai underworld, and also probably the only actor on the planet to refuse ₹600 crore. (Also read: How an actor's career was ruined by one line: Once rival to Shah Rukh, Aamir Khan, he changed his name, left India) Filmmaker Shandar Amrohi, the son of Kamal Amrohi, was particularly fond of Preity, often referring to her as his daughter, In 2011, Amrohi announced that he would leave his ₹600-crore wealth to Preity after he dies, instead of bequeathing it to his children. Preity, however, refused the offer. Later that year, Amrohi told Hindustan Times that he was hurt by Preity's statements and would not name her in his will. 'I am very senior to her. I had met her first in Mariott hotel where she was with her then boyfriend Ness Wadia. I told her she seems like a daughter to me, and even sent her gifts. When I got into a tiff with my siblings, someone informed her that I was in trouble. She came to my house and gave me moral support. Mujhe uske naraaz hone se koi farak nahi padta (I'm not bothered about she getting upset)," he said. Interestingly, after Amrohi's death, Preity took his children to court over a ₹2 crore loan she gave the filmmaker to cover his medical expenses. A post shared by Punjab Kings (@punjabkingsipl) In 2001, when a 26-year-old Preity was still finding a foothold in the film industry, producer Bharat Shah was arrested for allegedly helping gangster Chhota Shakeel invest in his film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. Even as most top stars distanced themselves from the case, Preity - one of the stars of the film - testified in court that she did receive calls from the gang. The actor even revealed that she was asked to pay up ₹50 lakh as extortion, but she refused. Then Union Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani advised Preity to take armed security but the actor refused again. Preity was later bestowed with the Godfrey Philips National Bravery Award. Preity entered Bollywood with a supporting role in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se in 1997, before finding fame as a female lead in Kya Kehna and Soldier. Over the next decade, she appeared in several hits Dil Chahta Hai, Koi Mil Gaya, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer Zaara, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. After 2007, Preity's appearances in films became sporadic. She played lead roles in two English-language films - The Last Lear and Heaven on Earth, before stepping away after cameos in Heroes and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. At this point, Preity was 32 and still considered one of the top stars in Bollywood. The actor attempted a comeback in 2013-14 with Ishkq in Paris and Happy Ending, before stepping away from Bollywood again. Preity will make her comeback to the big screen this year with Lahore 1947. Preity is also the co-owner of the IPL team Punjab Kings (earlier Kings XI Punjab) since 2008. The actor is regularly seen at the team's games every Indian Premier League.
