Timelapse: ‘Pink' full moon rises over the Bay Bridge
(KRON) — The Bay Bridge skyline was especially beautiful over the weekend thanks to a 'pink full moon' hanging low in the sky. The 'pink moon' — the first full moon of spring — was at its brightest on Saturday at 8:23 p.m. However, Sunday's moonrise also appeared big and beautiful. (Lani Tinio) Bay Area photographer Lani Tinio shared a timelapse of the Moon rising over the Bay Bridge on Sunday with KRON4. Although the moon appeared especially large over the weekend, KRON4 Meteorologist Kyla Grogan said that the Moon was actually at its farthest point from Earth. 'It's actually not a big full moon, in fact, it's the smallest and farthest away full moon of the year,' Grogan said. 'We just had skies that were clear enough to see it, but it's actually dimmer and appears smaller than usual.' Video: Peninsula crosswalks hacked with mock messages from Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk The Moon's large appearance is due to an astronomical anomaly known as 'moon illusion.' According to NASA, the moon appears larger because our brains trick us into perceiving it that way, and scientists aren't sure why. 'When we observe the Moon near the horizon, it often looks huge – whether it's peeking over the shoulder of a distant mountain, rising out of the sea, hovering behind a cityscape, or looming over a thicket of trees,' NASA's website reads. 'But here's the thing: It's all in your head. Really. The Moon's seeming bigness is an actual illusion, rather than an effect of our atmosphere or some other physics.' 5.2 magnitude earthquake shakes Southern California NASA offers several ways to easily disprove the Moon's large appearance. 'Hold up your outstretched index finger next to the Moon,' NASA suggests. 'You'll find that your fingernail and the Moon are about the same size. Or try looking at the Moon through a paper tube, or bend over and look backward between your legs. When you view it like this, the Moon will be nowhere near as big as it had seemed.' Sneaker waves, rip tides possible for the coast this weekend
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Beachgoers should use extra caution on the coast this weekend as an incoming swell will increase the chances of rip tides and sneaker waves, the National Weather Service warns. 'Beachgoers should be mindful as a longer-period swell arrives Sunday,' the NWS forecast states. 'This longer period will result in hazardous beach conditions with increased sneaker wave risk, rip current risk, and larger shore break. 'Really Stupid Park': SF commuters use Great Highway park-naming contest to vent Sneaker waves are potentially deadly waves that surge up beaches well past the existing shoreline. Sneaker waves can occur at any time without warning and can potentially knock beachgoers off their feet and drag them into the icy water. KRON4 Meteorologist Kyla Grogan reports that the hazardous swell will last through Monday. 'Warmer, sunnier weather means people will likely flock to our beautiful coast this weekend,' Grogan said. 'So if you do head out to the coast, be aware of the dangers and never turn your back on the ocean. It is a great idea also to keep a safe distance from the surf zone, to keep a watchful eye on children and pets and in general to stay aware of conditions as they develop.' 'Watch your step!' Tiny, adorable newts on the move in the Bay Area 'Sneaker waves can happen on any surf coast, however, in the Northwest, water temperatures are frigid and victims caught in sneakers can lose control of their limbs in a matter of seconds,' the NWS website reads. 'The volume of sand, water, and gravel they carry and will deposit in an individuals' clothes. Survivors have described the water-sand mix in their clothes as feeling as heavy as concrete, rendering them incapable of escaping the receding waves pulling them into the ocean.'
