USS Indiana crew happy to be back at home base

GROTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Crew members of the USS Indiana submarine are back at their home port Thursday afternoon in Groton following their six-month mission at sea. The crew is glad to be home, and thanks to their service, parts of the world are a bit safer. Vietnam veterans honored statewide Thursday, commemorating 50 years since end of war The fast-attack sub, guided by Cmdr. Kyle McVay, has multi-mission capabilities, spans 377 feet and has a crew of 134 sailors. They have been away at sea supporting national security interests and maritime security operations. The time away from their loved ones has been tough on the sailors and their families. 'The hardest part was just calling her every time we went to port, because being under you always do your job,' said Christian Santiago, the cook for USS Indiana. 'I'm a cook , I basically feed my sea family.' 'There's no contact,' added Sonia Santiago of the Bronx, N.Y. 'You can send an email and hope and pray you get an email back, but more than likely it comes about six or seven days later.' These family members have a lot of catching up to do. But after three months, we're being told they could be deployed once again. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
