After hike, Hyderabad Metro Rail announces 10% discount on fares from Saturday

Days after it announced a fare hike, the L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL) on Tuesday announced a 10 per cent discount on the newly revised fares, across all fare zones in all three Metro corridors. The new fares will come into effect from Saturday. The L&TMRHL, which built and operates the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), had recently announced a travel fare hike ranging from Rs 2 on the minimum fare of Rs 10 to Rs 15 on the existing maximum fare of Rs 60, effective from May 17. The hike announcement was the first ever for the Metro since its inception in November 2017. 'As a responsible urban transit operator, L&TMRHL remains committed to providing efficient and affordable mobility solutions to the people of Hyderabad. While the fare revision was essential for maintaining the sustainability of Metro operations, we understand the importance of minimising the financial impact on our valued passengers,' KVB Reddy, MD and CEO of L&TMRHL, said. 'In alignment with passenger feedback and welfare, we have decided to provide a 10 per cent discount on the newly revised fares, across all fare zones in all three Metro corridors from 24 May 2025, demonstrating our dedication to making daily commuting more accessible. We truly appreciate the continued support of our passengers and assure them of our unwavering commitment to delivering a reliable and commuter-friendly metro experience,' he added. The fare revision was introduced based on the recommendations of the Fare Fixation Committee and as part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the long-term sustainability of Metro operations and maintenance.

Metro fares up steep 25%, new charges from May 17

1 2 3 Hyderabad: Come May 17, metro rail travellers have to shell out more as L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (L&TMRHL), that operates the Metro Rail, increased the fares by up to 25%. While the base fare is set to go up from Rs 10 to 12, the maximum fare has been increased from Rs 60 to 75, with the charges varying based on the distance travelled. The hike will impact over five lakh commuters who rely on Metro for their daily commute. The Metro operator has been seeking fare hike for a long time, following similar moves by other Metro systems, notably Bengaluru Metro, which recently hiked its fares by up to 50%. In accordance with the Metro Railways Act, 2002, a fare fixation committee (FFC) headed by a former judge of the high court, was constituted in 2022 to recommend a revised fare structure. The committee submitted its report, recommending the revised fare structure on Jan 25, 2023, and the revised fare structure came into force after two years. "We request your kind cooperation in embracing this revised fare structure, which is essential for maintaining and enhancing the quality of Hyderabad Metro Rail services for all," L&T said in a statement on Thursday. Reacting to the fare hike, commuters said the Metro authorities should first expand the current capacity by adding more coaches before effecting any fare hike. However, some travellers' associations said since L&T has raised the fares for the first time in seven years, the decision was justified.
