It Took a Whopping 350,000 Sequins to Make Whoopi Goldberg's 2025 Met Gala Dress

Whoopi Goldberg may be a comedian, but she meant serious business when it came to her look at the 2025 Met Gala For her second Met Gala, Goldberg turned to the maestro of suiting himself, Thom Browne, for her bespoke look: a black floor-length button-through dress fabricated in duchesse satin and outfitted with suit lapels and raglan sleeves with a white knee-length overcoat that laced up the back. The ensemble was accessorized with black-and-white longwing patent-leather boots with four-inch curved heels and a black top hat with a netted for his attention to detail—was nothing short of meticulous with his look for Goldberg. The white overcoat was embroidered with 350,000 matte sequins—a process that took 7,700 hours to create. 'For me, everything begins and ends with tailoring,' Browne says. 'I like to play with and reinterpret classic codes of black-tie dressing—and to reintroduce these traditional codes to people in ways they've never seen before.' Goldberg embellished her black-and-white look with colorful, bespoke L'Echanteur jewelry. On her fingers, Goldberg added brass finger caps and rings encrusted with green tourmaline, diamonds, tanzanite, garnet, and purple sapphire. She festooned her dress with a gold link chain and keyhole brooch with black opal and blue and white diamonds, with gold sunglasses finishing everything off.

It Took 350,000 Sequins to Make Whoopi Goldberg's 2025 Met Gala Dress

Whoopi Goldberg has officially arrived at the 2025 Met Gala. For her second Met Gala, Goldberg turned to the maestro of suiting himself, Thom Browne, for her bespoke look. She wore a black floor-length button-through dress fabricated in duchess satin, outfitted with suit lapels and raglan sleeves. Browne also fashioned the comedian and talk show host in a white knee-length overcoat with a lace-up back. She accessorized with a longwing black and white patent leather boot with a four-inch curved heel and a black tophat with a netted veil. Known for his attention to detail, Browne's look for Goldberg was nothing short of meticulous. The white overcoat was embroidered with 350,000 matte sequins; the look took 7,700 hours to create. 'For me, everything begins and ends with tailoring,' Browne says. 'I like to play with and re-interpret classic codes of black tie dressing. I like to reintroduce these traditional codes to people in ways they've never seen before.'She embellished her black-and-white look with colorful, bespoke L'Echanteur jewelry. On her fingers, Goldberg added brass finger caps and rings encrusted with green tourmaline, diamonds, tanzanite, garnet, and purple sapphire. She festooned her dress with a gold link chain and keyhole brooch, adorned with black opal and blue and white diamonds. She finished off her accessorizing with gold sunglasses. The look is a complete 180 from the last time Goldberg attended the Met Gala. In 2021, for 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,' she opted for six tiers of royal purple ruffles from Valentino's Pierpaolo Piccioli. Goldberg has proven herself an enduring fashion inspiration for the new generation. At the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, Ayo Edebiri tipped her hat to Goldberg, wearing a white suit from The Row. So what better place for Whoopi Goldberg to embrace that status than at the 2025 Met Gala?
