Filipino-Canadian wins record $80M lotto jackpot in Canada; plans to help family, community, visit PH

A Filipino-Canadian man from Surrey, British Columbia, has won the largest Lotto Max jackpot ever claimed by a single person in Canada. Justin Simporios, who bought his winning ticket at the Walmart Supercentre in Central City, Surrey, took home a massive $80 million from the May 9, 2025, lottery draw. He found out he won while checking the lottery results late at night. 'I saw that someone won $80 million in Surrey. I was joking and told my wife, 'we're millionaires!' and she told me to stop making that joke. After, I manually checked each number before scanning [using the BCLC Lotto! App]. I cried and shouted, 'we're millionaires!'' Simporios said via British Columbia Lottery Corporation. The excitement did not stop there. Simporios shared that his wife was in 'complete disbelief and a bit mad' when he woke her up, as their daughter was unwell. However, realizing the life-changing news, they both shared the overwhelming joy. With his newfound fortune, Simporios plans to prioritize his family and give back to the community. 'I want to help my family and my wife's family. I'll pay off my sister's medical school debt and help my mom retire early – just giving my family a head start in life,' he said. 'I've struggled before and needed help. Even if I can give an ounce of happiness, I want to help where we can. This feels like a dream,' he added. Simporios also plans to visit his family in the Philippines for a long-awaited reunion, as his wife and child have never been there. Additionally, as a fan of the LA Lakers, he hopes to watch LeBron James play before the basketball star retires. 'The biggest change will be having more time with my wife and family. We want to live with a purpose – to help the community around us,' he added.

B.C.'s newest multi-millionaire wiped away tears on Thursday as he received his prize money. Justin Simporios won the $80-million Lotto Max jackpot from the May 9, draw. This is the largest lottery jackpot ever won in B.C. and is also the largest jackpot ever won by a single individual in Canada. 'I just can't help my tears,' Simporios said. 'It's an amazing feeling. It's real, it's sinking in now, but it's life-changing, right? It's just too much right now, but thank you so much, thank you. It's not sad tears, it is happy tears.' Simporios said last Friday that he was planning to have burgers for dinner with his wife and daughter but needed to pick up buns and cheese. He noticed at the Central City Walmart that they also sold lottery tickets so he bought a $12 quick pick. WHEN IN ROME The outing marks the first time Timothee and Kylie have officially posed together at an event red carpet. Kylie looked stunning in a floor-length black gown with her signature plunging neckline. The dress had a crystal pattern embellished throughout the fabric and she kept her hair up in a tight bun. 8 The couple showed off PDA and intensely gazed into each other's eyes in front of the cameras Credit: Getty 8 Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner attend the photocall during the 70th David Di Donatello at Cinecitta Studios Credit: Getty 8 The pair shows off PDA as they couldn't keep their hands off of each other at the event Credit: Getty Timothee looked dapper in a black velvet double-breasted blazer with matching pants. They then headed inside the venue hand-in-hand for Timothee to receive his award. ‘It's a really nice knife': Bondi Junction killer's voice heard for first time

The voice and words of Bondi Junction Westfield mass killer Joel Cauchi have been heard in public for the first time, a year since he took six lives and was shot dead by a heroic police officer. The recordings, made 15 months before the stabbing attack, captured a 'missed opportunity' to intervene in Cauchi's psychological deterioration, despite the desperate attempts of his loving mother and police to get him help. The 40 year-old was living with schizophrenia and unmedicated for years before he walked into Bondi Junction Westfield armed with a USMC Ka-Bar knife and began stabbing innocent shoppers in April 2024. A coronial inquest into the mass casualty event has reconvened for a second week of hearings focusing on interactions Cauchi had with police in his home state of Queensland. Body-worn videos captured by QPS officers are the very first public record of Cauchi speaking in his own words. Queensland Police Senior Constable Matthew McDonald and his partner Constable Hope Porter were called to the Cauchi family home in Toowoomba at dusk in January 2023. Body-worn video from both officers, played in the inquest, began with a fidgety Cauchi in a purple LA Lakers jersey on the nature strip outside the weatherboard house. Cauchi had called the police himself, saying his father had taken away his 'military collectibles', including a USMC Ka-Bar knife.
