LG Energy begins mass production of batteries for ESS at US plant
LG Energy Solution Ltd., South Korea's leading battery maker, said Sunday it has begun mass production of lithium iron phosphate batteries for energy storage systems at its manufacturing plant in the United States. The pouch-type LFP batteries for ESS, based on long cell technology, are being manufactured at the LGES plant in Michigan, according to the Korean company. "We are currently in discussions with multiple customers in the North American region for the supply of our ESS batteries," LGES officials said, noting that supply to a number of major US energy firms, such as Terra-Gen and Delta Electronics, has already been confirmed. LGES said it plans to swiftly respond to growing demand for ESS in advanced industries, such as artificial intelligence data centers and renewable energies. LGES is the only major global battery maker that started mass production of LFP batteries tailored for use in ESS in the US. (Yonhap)

LG Energy, French firm DBG set up battery recycling JV
LG Energy Solution Ltd., South Korea's leading battery maker, said Tuesday it has partnered with French metal scrap recycler Derichebourg to establish a battery recycling joint venture in France. Under the 50:50 JV, the two companies will build a battery recycling plant in Val-d'Oise, just north of Paris, capable of processing more than 20,000 tons of used batteries and scrap annually, with operations slated to begin in 2027, LGES said in a press release. It is the first battery recycling JV formed between a South Korean and a European company in Europe. "This partnership (with DBG) will serve as a stepping stone for the company to expand into the European battery recycling market," an LGES official said. Used batteries and scrap will be processed into black mass, which can be refined into core battery materials, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, to be reused in the battery manufacturing process at LGES's global production facilities, the company said. The supply of used battery resources are expected to grow rapidly in France, as the country accounted for 15 percent of total electric vehicle sales in Europe last year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. GM's Mary Barra Has to Make a $35 Billion EV Bet Work in Trump's America
Businessweek The Big Take The US automaker is up against tariffs, an oil-loving president and Elon Musk in the White House. By The Ultium Cells factory outside Nashville spans five football fields and runs 24-7, cranking out 5,000 finished battery cells an hour. The site and a sister plant in Ohio are co-owned by General Motors Co. and South Korea's LG Energy Solution Ltd., and together they can make enough cells to build a new electric vehicle nearly every minute—most of them GM cars. Although the plants aren't near full capacity, they already produce more cells than Tesla Inc. does in North America. Inside the factory, fewer than 250 workers on the day shift are watching computer screens or monitoring a network of chemical mixers, coating machines and drying ovens that brew the essential ingredients of a battery and slather the resulting slurry onto rolled-up metal sheets. The sheets are then cut and stuffed into pouches, which will serve as the battery cell, and are set to cure at about 140F (60C). Later, a system of shelves moving up, down and side to side stacks the cells, each long and slender like a giant envelope, on blue racks 40 feet high. In this rickhouse for high-tech spirits, the cells go through a sort of fermentation process known as finishing that lasts 10 days.

LG Energy wins ESS battery supply deal in Poland
LG Energy Solution Ltd., South Korea's leading battery maker, said Tuesday it has signed a deal to begin supplying batteries next year for energy storage systems to be built in Poland. LGES will supply lithium iron phosphate batteries for the 1-gigawatt-hour ESS facility set to start operations in 2027 by Poland's state-run utility firm Polska Grupa Energetyczna, the company said in a press release. The LFP batteries will be produced at LGES' plant in Poland's southwestern city of Wroclaw, it said. The company expects the latest deal will help it obtain further ESS battery deals in Europe. To ride out a slowdown in all-electric car sales, LGES has changed some of the battery production lines in the Wroclaw plant for the production of ESS batteries, for which demand is on the rise. The company has production facilities in South Korea, Poland, Indonesia and North America. (Yonhap)
