History Made; Girls compete for state wrestling title for first time

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The LHSAA State wrestling tournament is back in Louisiana, but this year it looks a little different. For the first time ever girls wrestling is a sanctioned sport in the state of Louisiana. 'My year we had three girls in the whole state that wrestled and now there are 212 females towing that line and showing them what they have,' said Haughton coach Brittany Shelton. 'It's amazing to see, I can not be grateful enough for all these girls stepping up and just making history today.' LHSAA State Wrestling Tournament Makes History in Bossier with Girls' Division 'I've seen a lot of really talented athletes out there, some girls are really bringing it, it really excites me,' said North Desoto coach and current UFC Fighter Andrea Lee. 'For one, I wish I could have wrestled when I was in high school so I think this is super cool that Louisiana is now so open to women's wrestling.' 'It's been absolutely amazing, all the girls have been very competitive,' said Caddo Magnet 107 lbs. Zoey Brown. 'I can tell that everyone is growing and getting better and it's just been a blast getting to play with other people and wrestle all different types of people.' The LHSAA Championship round of the tournament gets underway on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Brookshire's Grocery Arena. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
