Couple, 3 daughters charred to death in Kanpur blaze

Kanpur: A couple and their three minor daughters were charred to death in a massive fire at a five-storey building in Chamanganj area of Kanpur late Sunday. The bodies of Mohammad Danish (45), his wife Nazmi Saba (42), and their three daughters: Sara (15), Simra (12) and Anaya (7) were found on the fourth floor. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident . He directed district administration officials and fire brigade teams to reach the site immediately and expedite relief and rescue operations. Danish ran a shoe factory from the lower floors. While Danish's family lived on the fourth floor, the second and third floors were occupied by Danish's brothers and their families. The fire reportedly caused by a short-circuit broke out around 10pm on Sunday and spread rapidly due to chemicals and leather stocks kept in the shoe factory. While other family members managed to escape, Danish and his family got trapped in the towering flames, witnesses said. When the fire broke out, Danish initially escaped with his father Aqeel, but realizing his wife and daughters were trapped he went back inside. As he attempted to rescue them, the fire intensified and the family got trapped in the blaze. Chief fire officer, Kanpur, Deepak Sharma said around 30 fire tenders and 70 firefighters were rushed to the site around 10.30pm but the narrow lanes and intense blaze slowed down the rescue. As the fire worsened, an SDRF team joined the operation around 1:30am. Authorities cordoned off a 500-metre area on both sides. Additional commissioner of police Rajesh Srivastava said 20 people were rescued from the first, second, and third floors. To reach the top floor, they had to cut through the wall. Firefighters reached the fourth floor using ladders around 3am, but Danish and his family were found charred. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a moving sight, one daughter was found clinging to her mother. They were taken to a govt hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. The exact cause of fire would be known after a probe, said CFO Deepak Sharma. People from half a dozen neighbouring buildings were evacuated to safety, he added. Danish's father Aqeel said when his son went upstairs, he called him. "Danish said 'hello' but the call then got disconnected," said Aqeel, regretting that he could do nothing to save his son and his family. Witnesses said chemicals kept in the shoe factory along with LPG cylinders and airconditioners intensified the blaze. Sajjad Ahmed, an eyewitness, told TOI, "We heard three loud explosions, probably when LPF cylinders exploded." Firefighters and SDRF personnel brought the flames under control in the early hours of Monday. ADM Rajesh Kumar and Mayor Pramila Pandey also arrived at the scene to take note and supervise the rescue operation.

The 'Xeneize' visit the 'Matador' at the José Dellagiovanna Stadium for Matchday 16 of the 2025 Apertura Tournament in the Argentine Professional Football League (LPF). Advertisement After the setback in the Superclásico and the departure of Fernando Gago, Boca Juniors take the field in the final matchday of the regular phase of the 2025 Apertura Tournament with the goal of securing all three points to finish at the top of Zone A in the Professional Football League (LPF). 'Xeneize' have accumulated 32 points and are currently second to Argentinos Juniors by just one point, so they absolutely need to win this afternoon to reclaim the lead heading into the round of 16. Boca Juniors' starting eleven Mariano Herrón, once again appointed as interim coach, is fielding his best players. Tigre, meanwhile, have also secured qualification for the round of 16 but are aiming for a home victory that would allow them to climb a few spots, avoid a tougher matchup, and benefit from home advantage.

Tamil Nadu should have its own labour laws: LPF

M. Shanmugam, General Secretary of the Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), a workers' union affiliated to the DMK, has written to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urging him to enact the State's own labour laws. In his letter, Mr. Shanmugam said the scope of the recently constituted High Level Committee on State Autonomy on Centre - State relations could be expanded to include the ongoing labour issues. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has passed four labour codes — Code on Wages, Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Code on Social Security, and Code on Industrial relations. These codes have subsumed 29 labour laws including the Industrial Disputes Act, and Factories Act, among others, he pointed out in his letter dated April 30. Though the Union government has framed the Central rules for these codes, since 'labour' was a concurrent subject, the States also have to frame and notify the rules. Only then, these Codes could be implemented. Non-BJP ruled States have decided not to notify the rules, since the trade unions have opposed the Codes, as they were against the interests of the working class, Mr. Shanmugam added. To provide support to the workers and to fill the vacuum created due to the impasse of these Codes, Tamil Nadu should enact its own labour welfare laws, he demanded. It can enact separate labour welfare laws with respect to wages, industrial relations, occupational safety etc., Mr. Shanmugam said.

Director Ariff Zulkarnain delves into topic of drugs in his new film 'Baga'

After completing critically acclaimed projects such as last year's feature film Doh , 2021's Dukun Diva and the hit series One Cent Thief , director Ariff Zulkarnain has embarked on a passion project rooted in his hometown of Terengganu. Last year, he returned home to shoot Baga , a film he wrote that examines two pressing issues in Terengganu – the longstanding drug crisis and the decline of traditional livelihoods, such as bot penambang (small ferry boat that connects riverside villages). 'I feel like my journey as a filmmaker isn't complete if I don't make a proper film about my roots,' said Ariff of Baga , which he self-financed and co-produced with One Cent Thief actor Syafiq Kyle and filmmaker Syafiq Yusof. According to Ariff, baga means 'paranoid' in the Terengganu dialect. 'It's also one of the side effects of consuming pil kuda, a drug similar to syabu (methamphetamine), commonly found in the rural areas of Kelantan and Terengganu,' he said. 'We've been shooting Baga since February last year. But because I was also involved in several projects with Astro Shaw, production was slightly delayed. It was only two months ago that we finally submitted the film to the Film Censorship Board (LPF).' Pok Awang (Wan Hanafi Su, right) is an ageing boatman whose profession is rapidly vanishing. Baga follows Jani (Amir Ahnaf of Kahar: Kapla High Council ), a pil kuda addict and small-time drug dealer. He also works part-time for Pok Awang (Wan Hanafi Su, Bunohan ), an ageing boatman whose profession is rapidly vanishing. Pok Awang sees Jani as his successor, hoping to pass on his skills and legacy. However, Jani's world unravels when his girlfriend, Melur (Amirah Razak, Lubuk ), reveals she is pregnant with his child. Terrified of what other villagers will say, Jani desperately tries to raise money for an abortion. His solution is to ask his dealer for a larger drug supply to sell. But after smoking the product himself and getting high, he loses the entire batch. Worse, he lands himself on the police radar. Determined to portray Jani's reality as authentically as possible, Ariff not only cast actors originally from Terengganu and Kelantan, but also included scenes depicting drug use. 'We worked closely with the actors, including lead actor Amir, for those scenes. We had rehearsals to ensure he understood how an addict would realistically behave and consume drugs. 'Of course, we didn't use real drugs ... but the smoke effect and burning process were made to look as realistic as possible.' As a result, LPF wanted Ariff to cut 16 scenes from the film. 'The scenes in question mostly depict characters smoking drugs. LPF wants them removed, but we're currently appealing to retain some of them. We'll see what they decide,' he told the press in March. Jani's world unravels when his girlfriend (Amirah Razak) reveals she is pregnant with his child. Asked why it was important to keep those scenes, Ariff stressed their relevance to the narrative. 'For a long time, whenever we make films about drug addiction, we're told not to show drug use explicitly, for fear it might encourage imitation. 'But we included those scenes because they show how drugs destroy lives. 'If we remove them, audiences won't fully understand or empathise with the main character – a drug addict who turns to dealing as a means of survival. The emotional impact of the story would be lost.' Having seen firsthand how drugs affect not only users but also those around them, Ariff insisted that these scenes cannot be excluded. 'It's become a way of life for many – living just to buy drugs. 'These are mostly people from the B40 income group, such as construction workers, fishermen, lorry drivers. 'That's why I feel it's my responsibility to tell this story and raise awareness.' That said, Ariff is open to removing particularly sensitive content. 'For example, there's a scene where a schoolboy in uniform buys and uses drugs. I understand the concern, and I'm OK with taking that out,' he said. Since Ariff has funded the project independently, he's unsure what the next steps will be if the cuts are enforced. 'At the moment, we're not planning to reshoot. We're not backed by a big studio like Astro Shaw or Primeworks. It's just me, Syafiq Kyle and Syafiq Yusof. 'So yes, if the cuts go through, we'll be facing significant losses.' In the latest update, Ariff told StarLifestyle that he's currently in the process of making a second appeal. He's also exploring a collaboration with National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) as well as Women, Family and Community Development Ministry for the film's release.
