‘Geaux Bald', raising $36K for cancer patients
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine student organization, Geaux Bald, held their annual 'Shave Day' on Thursday.
Med students and staff volunteered to shave or have large portions of their hair cut off as part of their year long fundraiser to benefit Feist Weiller Cancer Center patients. 'Shave Day' is the culmination of all the hard work the group has done throughout the year.
The organization set a goal of $30,000 this year. They ended up raising over $36,000.
'It feels amazing to raise so much money for such a great cause. To work toward that goal, and then to exceed it,' said Sarah Guedry-Dixon, second-year medical school student and 2025 Geaux Bald president. 'It's a very special cause for me. A lot of people can relate. I've had family members touched by cancer and being able to give back to those patients and raise money for a resource in this area is very important and touching to me.'

Fifteen students participated. Faculty members also had their locks cut, including Evans Knight, LSUH Sciences Foundation Director of Development, who had been growing his hair since the days of COVID lockdowns.
'Last year I jokingly promised the executive board that I would shave my head next year and today is next year. So I have to put up or shut up and put my money where my mouth is,' said Knight. 'I hope that they'll be able to use [the hair]. I know that some of the organizations we are working with are going to be able to use the longer donated hair to make wigs for children affected by hair loss due to cancer treatments.'
Professionals from Chemistry Hair Salon in Shreveport did the hair cuts and shavings.
This year marked the 14th year for the event, which was founded following a cancer diagnosis of a beloved LSUHS faculty member back in 2011.
