Southwest Airlines to charge $35 for first checked bag

May 27 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines (LUV.N), opens new tab on Tuesday said it will charge customers $35 for one checked bag and $45 for the second, bringing an end to the airline's free luggage policy. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news on Tuesday. Southwest was the only major U.S. carrier that allowed customers to check two bags at no cost. The Dallas-based airline had said earlier in March that it would end its "bags fly free" policy by charging some customers, as the company's lackluster earnings have fueled pressure to revamp its business model.

Southwest Airlines (LUV) Will No Longer Allow Two Free Checked Bags for Passengers

Southwest Airlines (LUV) is ending its long-standing policy of allowing two free checked bags for most passengers. Starting Wednesday, passengers who buy Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus, or Anytime fares will now have to pay to check bags. While the exact fee hasn't been announced, other major U.S. airlines usually charge around $35 to $40 for the first checked bag. Southwest made this change after pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which pushed for cost-cutting and changes to the airline's business model in order to boost profits. Confident Investing Starts Here: Along with charging for checked bags, Southwest is introducing a Basic fare similar to what airlines like Delta (DAL), American (AAL), and United (UAL) already offer. This new fare doesn't allow for ticket changes, it boards last, and has fare credits that expire in six months instead of a year. Southwest is also ending its old 'Wanna Get Away' fare and moving toward assigned seating for 2026 flights. In addition, planes will be updated with more legroom seats, and mobile bag-tag printers will be added at airports to speed up the check-in process. However, it is worth noting that some travelers will still get free bags, including those with Business Select tickets, A-List loyalty members, and holders of a co-branded Southwest credit card (and their travel companions). Free carry-on rules aren't changing, so Southwest expects more passengers to bring bags onboard. Interestingly, even though the change upset some customers, CEO Bob Jordan said that it hasn't hurt bookings. He also noted that these changes are aimed at making Southwest more efficient and competitive in a tough market. Is LUV Stock a Good Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on LUV stock based on five Buys, six Holds, and five Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average LUV price target of $30.47 per share implies 1.6% downside risk.

Southwest bag fees go into effect

The LUV airline will start operating a lot like other carriers next week, with checked bag fees and a new fare type with limitations. Why it matters: Southwest has prided itself on its "bags fly free" policy, flexible fares and open seating, but all of those perks are about to change. The Dallas-based carrier announced the new policies two months ago, and its reputation has since taken a hit. The latest: The changes are being rolled out in phases. Starting Wednesday, Southwest will impose checked bag fees for new and updated bookings and introduce a basic fare type that doesn't allow changes, same-day standby or transferable flight credits. Flight credits issued on or after Wednesday will expire in six months or a year, depending on the traveler's fare type, rolling back the airline's three-year-old policy that said flight credits never expire. The fine print: Southwest still hasn't said how much checked bags will cost. Prices will be "in line with industry standards" and will be released closer to Wednesday, the airline tells Axios. Online self-service options will not be available at first, the airline said. Southwest will process checked bag transactions at airports, either with an agent or at a kiosk. Zoom in: Bookings made or changed before Wednesday will still get two free checked bags, Southwest says. Rapid Rewards cardholders and up to eight people on the same reservation can get fees waived for their first bag. Companion pass holders' bag benefits will also extend to their companions. Reality check: Carry-ons are free for everyone. After all, Southwest isn't Spirit. Pro tips: If you need to change an existing booking or book a flight, try doing it this weekend to keep your two free bags. Bookings through Jan. 26 are currently open, which means you can book summer, Thanksgiving and Christmas travel before the bag fees kick in. A-List, A-List Preferred, and Rapid Rewards card members should include their Rapid Rewards number in their reservation to get their free bag benefit.
