Eid-ul-Azha: over 1.1m animals sold across Punjab
LAHORE: Over 1.1 million sacrificial animals were sold across 292 livestock markets in Punjab during Eid-ul-Adha whereas a total of 1.5 million animals were brought to markets throughout Punjab. Moreover, during an uninterrupted 72-hour sanitation operation, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) collected and safely disposed of 88,927 tons of animal waste in the Lahore Division. According to the Punjab Local Government Department on Monday, the figure relating to the sales of sacrificial animals involved all nine administrative divisions of the province, which highlights the thriving Eid animal trade. Lahore topped the list of divisions with the highest sales, recording the sale of 665,000 animals, which included 443,000 small animals (goats and sheep) and 222,000 large animals (cows and bulls). In Faisalabad, 112,000 animals were brought to market and 88,000 were sold. The Bahawalpur Division also displayed significant activity, with over 100,000 animals sold; in contrast, DG Khan had more modest sales figures, with 38,000 small animals and just 30,000 large animals sold. Moreover, Rawalpindi saw 84,000 animals brought into the markets, with 46,000 sold while Sahiwal recorded 47,000 animal sales and Sargodha impressively posted 94,000 animals sold. In Gujranwala, around 10,000 animals were bought and sold, and Multan experienced trade involving 16,000 animals. The Local Government Department noted that the livestock markets across the province remained largely organised, with improved facilities and management contributing to the smooth conduct of buying and selling activities. Meanwhile, Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq remained active during the Eid holidays to monitor the Eid Grand Operation launched on Eid-ul-Azha. On the first day, he reviewed the areas of Lahore, Kasur, Pattoki and Okara districts, while on the second day, the provincial minister went to Faisalabad, Gojra and Toba Tek Singh. In Lahore, Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq, Special Assistant Zeeshan Malik, Commissioner Lahore Zaid Bin Maqsood and Focal Person Suthra Punjab Asim Mehmood jointly visited the Safe City Authority and reviewed the monitoring of waste disposal with the help of Safe City cameras. Later, the Local Minister went to Laxmi Chowk and Mall Road awareness camps and checked the record of waste bags there. He also inspected the ongoing operation at the Baba Ground Dumping Site while visiting the suburbs of Shahi Qila and took feedback from the citizens. While talking to the media, the Minister said that the workers cleaning the roads and streets in the scorching heat are our heroes; ideal arrangements have been made for cleaning in the entire Punjab, including Lahore. 'About 130,000 staff were engaged in cleaning and they have broken their previous year's record of cleaning. There is a team in every city and every village and we will ensure that the set targets are achieved,' he added. On the second day of Eid, he visited Faisalabad city; on this occasion, Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad Nadeem Nasir and CEO of FWMC Rauf Ahmed gave a briefing. Rafiq reviewed the ongoing Grand Eid operation in different areas of Faisalabad and visited the control room and awareness camp at Chowk Ghanta Ghar. He expressed satisfaction with the overall cleanliness arrangements in Faisalabad. Meanwhile, the LWMC said that this Eid-ul-Adha, the Lahore Division witnessed exemplary cleanliness arrangements, breaking all previous records in waste management across the Division. It not only achieved unprecedented success in Lahore city but also set new benchmarks in Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Nankana Sahib. The comprehensive and uninterrupted 72-hour sanitation operation resulted in the environmentally safe disposal of 88,927 tons of animal waste, it added. Breaking down the figures, the LWMC successfully removed 54,888 tons of waste from Lahore, 15,543 tons from Sheikhupura, 12,066 tons from Kasur, and 6,430 tons from Nankana Sahib. 'These efforts surpassed all previous benchmarks, reflecting an exceptional level of preparedness and coordination. Throughout the three days of Eid, the Lahore Division addressed and resolved 20,268 complaints promptly,' the LWMC said. It averred that to prevent illegal dumping of waste into streams, drains, and canals Safe City and drone cameras monitored the situation continuously. The enforcement wing took actions that included the registration of 20 FIRs, seizure of three vehicles, and fines exceeding Rs 300,000. Moreover, for eco-friendly waste disposal, 2.4 million biodegradable bags were distributed throughout the Lahore Division. Moreover, the clean-up infrastructure included 651 service delivery camps, 254 temporary collection points, and 34 dumping sites. More than 24,000 sanitary heroes worked in three shifts using over 5000 pieces of machinery to ensure the success of the Suthra Punjab programme during Eid. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Eid-ul-Azha celebrated with religious fervour
LAHORE: Eid-ul-Azha, commemorating the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismael (AS) was celebrated with religious zeal and fervour. The day dawned with special prayers in mosques for well-being of the Muslim Ummah and peace, progress and prosperity of the country. Eid congregations were held at mosques, Eidgahs and open places in all cities, towns and villages across the country. Ulema, in their Eid sermons, highlighted the significance and philosophy of great sacrifice offered by Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismael (AS). After offering Eid prayers, the faithful offered sacrifice of animals to follow the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS). The process of sacrificing the animals continued on second and third days of Eid i.e. Sunday and Monday. After offering sacrifice of animals, the faithful distributed meat to their relatives and needy people. The faithful also visited graveyards to offer Fateha to their family members who left this world. The civic bodies in cities and towns have made special arrangements for disposal of offal and other solid waste during three days of Eid-ul-Azha and to ensure cleanliness. The Lahore Waste Management Company under Suthra Punjab made elaborate arrangements for cleanliness. The top management of LWMC remained in the field to ensure cleanliness arrangements. PHOTO: EXPRESS/FILE Following the collection of nearly 89,000 tonnes of animal waste across Lahore division on the Eid days, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a Rs10,000 bonus for each sanitation worker involved. "This year's Eid operation set new standards. Despite the intense summer heat, workers across cities and villages maintained exemplary cleanliness. I deeply appreciate their dedication and service," the chief minister stated. Lahore Division Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood reported that the employees in the city had removed 54,888 tonnes of sacrificial waste. The division-wide total reached 88,927 tonnes. The commissioner conducted inspections at key locations, including Harbanspura, Canal Road, Shad Bagh, Amir Road, China Scheme and Lakhodair. He reviewed the road cleaning, visited central and temporary dumping sites and monitored field activities. He said no district in the division had witnessed operational lapses. According to the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), the 72-hour sanitation campaign was the largest in the province's history, with operations extending to Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib. The waste removal included 15,543 tonnes from Sheikhupura, 12,066 tonnes from Kasur and 6,430 tonnes from Nankana Sahib. The LWMC stated that more than 24,000 sanitation workers, operating in three shifts with over 5,000 units of machinery, ensured the execution of the plan. The infrastructure for the operation included 651 service delivery camps, 254 temporary collection points and 34 dumping sites. Approximately 2.4 million biodegradable bags were distributed to promote environment-friendly disposal. The company also reported receiving and resolving 20,268 public complaints on the Eid, with the majorityover 16,000coming from Lahore. Citizens utilised a helpline, app and social media to report issues. Real-time surveillance via Safe City Authority and drone cameras helped prevent illegal dumping in streams, drains and canals. The authorities registered 20 FIRs, seized three vehicles and imposed fines exceeding Rs300,000 for violations.

Eid waste disposal: 9.5m eco-friendly waste bags distributed
LAHORE: The district administrations are distributing over 9.5 million eco-friendly waste bags in Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana for the disposal of sacrificial animal waste; 1.5 million bags in the provincial capital and over 9 million in the other three districts. This was disclosed during a Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC)'s briefing to Commissioner Lahore Division Zaid Bin Maqsood on Thursday. The Commissioner visited the Central Control Room, set up for cleanliness and online monitoring of the entire operation on Eid-ul-Adha at the LWMC Head Office; he was accompanied by the Deputy Commissioners of all four districts in Lahore Division. On this occasion, LWMC CEO Baber Sahib Din briefed the Commissioner about the cleaning operations in Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana districts. He said they will use a digital system to monitor the operations throughout the Lahore Division on Eid-ul-Adha. He averred that mechanical resources have been deployed, while 300 field camps have been set up in Lahore and 454 in Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Nankana for the immediate resolution of complaints and the free supply of biodegradable waste bags. He added that the best cleanliness arrangements are being ensured in 30 cattle markets set up in the Lahore Division. The Commissioner said this year, the LWMC is going to conduct cleanliness operations in Nankana, Sheikhupura and Kasur districts as well while the hotspot areas in the city of Lahore will be supervised by the Punjab Safe City Authority through drone cameras. Section 144 is enforced to deal with the people who throw offal in drains, canals and open plots. Strict action will be taken against the violators. He appealed to the people to cooperate with their teams by handing over animal waste packed in a bag to them, instead of throwing them on the streets. Meanwhile, on World Environment Day, the LWMC organised an awareness event on Mall Road to educate citizens about environmental protection. Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique participated in the event along with Special Assistant Asim Mahmood and LWMC CEO Baber Sahib Din. The officials visited the LWMC's model camp set up at Charring Cross and distributed eco-friendly waste bags to the public. During the event, they engaged with citizens to encourage them to make the environment plastic-free. The event concluded with an awareness walk, which was attended by a large number of LWMC workers and residents. In addition, during a meeting with LWMC workers, the Minister urged them to work diligently during the Eid-ul-Adha festival. Five dead, four injured as dumper hits pedestrians in Lahore
Listen to article At least five people, including two schoolgirls, were killed and four others injured when a dumper truck belonging to the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) ran over pedestrians in the Baghbanpura area of Lahore, Express News reported on Wednesday. The driver fled the scene following the incident, which police have described as a case of "criminal negligence." A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the driver under charges of manslaughter, reckless driving, and other serious offenses. According to the police, initial investigations indicate the driver was operating the vehicle negligently, leading to the deadly crash. Among the deceased were two schoolgirls, 12-year-old Aima and 10-year-old Hafsa. Two men, 45-year-old Rafaqat and 41-year-old Dawood, were also among the victims, while one body has yet to be identified. The injured have been identified as 26-year-old Ali, 10-year-old Afan, 10-year-old Bilal, and 18-year-old Komal. They were shifted to Services Hospital and a nearby private facility for treatment. SP Cantt Ali Raza said that multiple raids were being conducted to arrest the suspect. 'The driver responsible will be apprehended soon and brought to justice,' he added.
