Hear from DIII Valley state track podium finishers
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) – Dozens of Valley athletes reached the podium at the OHSAA State Track and Field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University this past weekend. Watch above for reactions from some of the Valley's Division III track & field stars! McDonald's Carson Klase reached fifth place in the Boys 800-meter run and second place in the Boys 1600-meter run. He also took second along with Joey Cappuzzello, Josh Krumpak and Eddie Baldwin in the Boys 4×800-meter Relay. 'I'm proud, getting on the podium is always nice, especially doubling up on events,' said Klase. 'It's nice, I can't imagine much better.' McDonald boys as a whole also claimed a share of the Division III State Title with Huron. Maplewood's Andrew Donaldson took home second place in the Boys 800-meter run. He also claimed third place with Trevor Shipman, Ethan Nevinski and Micah Sparks in the Boys 4×800-meter Relay. 'I got to show up for, not just for my team, but show the underclassmen, the younger kids that you kick butt in practice and kick butt meets throughout the year you can yourself down here,' said Donaldson. LaBrae's Laylah Hayes took sixth place in the Girls 200-meter dash. 'All that hard work to be worth something, I missed my graduation for track, so it was all worth it in the end and super grateful to God,' said Hayes. Mineral Ridge's Dominic Pappagallo earned fourth place in the Boys 3200-meter run. 'Every single moment of my career from seventh grade to middle school to senior year, I just let it all out there,' said Pappagallo. 'Used all my training for this moment, I'm satisfied.' Manchester tops LaBrae in regional semifinal
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – LaBrae softball suffered a 9-0 loss to Manchester in the Division V Regional Semifinal on the campus of Youngstown State University on Wednesday evening. The Panthers scored two runs in the first inning before piling up six more between the 4th and 6th innings to pad the lead in the win. Manchester was led by Alli Hodgkinson's perfect 4-for-4 day with a run batted in, while Leah Page drove in three runs on two hits. In the circle, Rachel Baker struck out 10 batters during the complete game shutout. For the Vikings, Riley Rowe registered two hits while Leah DeArmitt, Madison Johnson and Patricia Horton each tallied one hit. Rowe also struck out 5 batters across 4.2 innings pitched. LaBrae softball ends the season with an impressive 23-7 overall record and a district championship. LaBrae rallies from 5-run deficit to win District Title
WELLINGTON, Ohio (WKBN) – LaBrae rallied from a 5-run first-inning deficit to top Columbiana, 11-5, in the Division V Softball District Championship on Friday afternoon at Wellington Community Park. It is the Vikings' first District title since 2013. With the loss, Columbiana's season comes to an end with a record of 21-8. LaBrae improves to 22-6 overall on the season. LaBrae outlasts Girard to advance to district final
LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio (WKBN) – LaBrae outlasted Girard, 8-6, in the Northeast 4 Division 5 district semifinal tilt. The Vikings held an 8-4 lead heading into the final frame. Riley Rowe, Leah DeArmitt and Morgan Thompson each had two hits and scored a pair of runs. Thompson drove in two as well. Rowe pitched the first six-plus innings, permitting just one earned run while striking out seven for the win. DeArmitt came on to finish the game by striking out three of the four batters she faced. The Vikings (21-6) advance to Wednesday's matchup with Tuslaw/Columbiana winner. For Girard, Quinn Wilster – a freshman – tripled and singled while scoring two runs. Campbell coach celebrates program's 7th district title
SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Campbell Memorial outlasted LaBrae 64-62 in the Division VI boys basketball district championship game at Salem High School on Saturday night. The game was televised live as the WKBN High School Basketball Game of the Week. Following the win, Campbell head coach Nick Canterino spoke with Chad Krispinsky.
