Soup on Tues: French Onion in Edgewater
👋 Sam here, taking a brief reprieve from my weekly beer dispatches to dip my spoon in the local soup scene.
Soup of the week: French Onion at La Ville Lumière.
State of play: Cleveland's newest French bistro opened late last year in the Edgewater neighborhood and has already established itself on the fine dining circuit.
Vibe check: White tablecloths, crystal stemware, aproned servers, framed Parisian prints on the walls, etc.
I camped at the bar, but the local blue hairs were out in force in the main dining room.
Zoom in: The entrees were too rich for my blood (duck for $36, sea bass for $47), but the happy hour menu included $6 daily batch cocktails and a handful of $10 items.
The intrigue: The standard French Onion soup ($14) comes in something like a copper witches' cauldron, and my server warned me what I was in for — "It's large format," he hinted.
I opted for the smaller size ($8).
Verdict: Piping hot and indulgently cheesy through the final greedy spoonful. The perfect food for dismal spring weather.
