Lok Satta Party demands reopening of Bhimasingi sugar factory, stages protest

Lok Satta Party State President Bhisetti Babji on Monday demanded that the government take steps for the immediate reopening of Bhimasingi sugar factory. Terming it the lone factory under cooperative sector in the State, Mr. Babji along with party activists staged a protest near the factory. He said its revival with modern technology would benefit thousands of sugarcane farmers in the district and also would ensure employment to nearly 500 persons and create economic activity in several villages of Jami and Gantyada mandals of the district. Mr. Babji alleged that the government had not taken steps to clear PF, gratuity and other benefits of the workers who lost employment five years ago after the closure of the factory. He said that many workers were unable to meet both ends in the absence of retirement benefits which were supposed to be paid as per the Labour Acts.

CITU leaders demand scrapping of Labour Codes to protect workers' interests

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)-Srikakulam district president Ch. Ammannaidu and secretary P. Tejeswara Rao on Sunday asked the Union government to scrap all Labour Codes and reintroduce old Labour Acts which used to protect the interests of the workforce of the country. CITU organised a meeting in Srikakulam with several organisations, seeking their support to the all India strike proposed on May 20 to oppose the Labour Codes and 'anti-worker' policies of the Union government. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ammannaidu said that only managements would be benefited with the Labour Codes as all clauses were against the interests of the employees and workers. Mr. Tejeswara Rao said that there was no mechanism to question the managements if anybody was removed from service without any notice. He said that the workers turned into bonded labourers and would be forced to work more than 12 hours in a day. He demanded that ₹26,000 per month needed to be fixed as the minimum wage in the backdrop of skyrocketing prices of all essential commodities, transport charges, fees of schools and hospitals. AITUC district honorary secretary Chikkala Govinda Rao, YSRCP trade union leaders S. Venkata Rao, Bank Employees' Federation National Committee member M. Srinivasa Rao and others were present.

Stop acquiring public lands, use APIIC's 44,000 acres first: CPI (M)

CPI(M) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao has urged the State government to halt the acquisition of people''s lands for industrial development. He pointed out the vast yet underutilised land bank held by the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) in the State. In a telephonic conversation with The Hindu on May Day, Mr Rao said: 'Although APIIC controls 1.44 lakh acres of land and has already allocated 1 lakh acres to various companies, even a decade later, many companies have failed to establish industries. The government should take back the lands from these companies and give them to new entrepreneurs. There is no justification for further acquiring public land when 44,000 acres are still available with the APIIC.' He highlighted how many corporate companies acquired lands in Visakhapatnam under the pretext of creating employment opportunities, but failed to deliver on their promises, duping the government. He is of the opinion that the government should promote small-scale industries in a big way. He said: 'It is the small-scale industries that can create significant employment in rural and semi-urban areas.' He criticised the introduction of the new labour codes which replaced the earlier Labour Acts. He highlighted that the codes fail to safeguard the rights and welfare of workers across the country. He said: 'The labour codes favour companies and interests of corporates. The workers have lost several benefits that they previously enjoyed.'
