As the UAE's four-day Eid Al Adha holiday begins on Thursday, June 5, 2025, many wonder what happens if they are required to work during this public holiday. According to Federal Decree-Law No.
33 of 2021, Article 28, private sector employees are entitled to specific compensation for working on official holidays.
Public holiday leave and compensation
Article 28 clearly states:
Workers are entitled to official days off with full pay on public holidays, which are determined by the Cabinet's resolution.
If an employee works during any public holiday, the employer must compensate them by either:
Granting another day off for each day worked, or
Paying the wage for that day plus at least a 50% increase on the basic daily wage.
This law applies to all employees regardless of category or grade, as long as the employer has requested or required the employee to work during the holiday with permission.
Senior Associate at Al Suwaidi and Company, Suneer Kumar, explained to Gulf News:
'Article 28 of UAE Labour Law No.
33/2021 is applicable to all employees – irrespective of categories or grade – provided that the employer requested the employer to work or the work requirement necessitates the employee, with permission, to work during the public holidays. [Then the] employer will compensate them with another day of rest, in exchange for every day of holiday, or the employee will be paid the wages in respect of that day and will additionally be paid an excess of not less than 50 per cent of the basic salary for that day.
