Man handed two life sentences for fatal shooting at KCK market that killed two
A man was sentenced in Wyandotte County court Thursday for the killings of two people inside a Kansas City, Kansas market in 2019, according to a news release from the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office.
Jermelle Byers, 45, was sentenced to two life sentences Thursday after being convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for the fatal July 10, 2019 shootings of 62-year-old Dennis G. Edwards and 42-year-old Lachell Day.
Kansas City Kansas police responded to Edwards Original Corner Market at 81 N. Mill St. on July 10, 2019, around 3 p.m. on reports of a shooting.
There, officers located Day, injured, and Byers, who pointed a handgun at police. Officers retreated from the building, and Byers was taken into custody after a two-hour standoff with police.
Inside the market, officers found Edwards dead and Day with critical injuries, from which she died.
Officers said the shooting was related to a domestic disturbance between Byers and Day.
Edwards Original Corner Market closed permanently after the incident.
Byers will serve his sentence in the Kansas Department of Corrections, according to the news release. He will become eligible for parole on March 10, 2071.
