JRU completes reverse sweep vs Perpetual for back-to-back wins
NCAA Jose Rizal University exemplified heart and passion on Friday as they pulled off a come-from-behind win against the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 18-25, 17-25, 31-29, 25-20, 15-12, in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament at the Filoil Centre in San Juan. The win came after JRU's victory last Tuesday against San Beda University. After a tight third set which the Lady Bombers eventually claimed, momentum shifted on their side as they kept Perpetual at bay. The deciding set, however, was another close one with both teams tied at seven before Geraldine Palacio's attack went out to hand the lead to JRU. A block from the Lady Bombers' side widened the gap but Palacio's tip trimmed down the deficit. JRU and Perpetual tied the set again at 11 but errors marred the latter's offense to give the Lady Bombers a two-point advantage. Jem Menor tried to salvage the Lady ALTAs' hopes but Czarina Ramos' attack sent JRU to match point. Eventually, Kring Batara's block sealed the victory for JRU. While the wins came in late in the season for JRU, head coach Mia Tioseco said the wins are just results of their hard work. "Sadly ngayon lang namin nakukuha [ang panalo] na pa-end na but at least better late than never, sabi nga nila. Happy ako na at least nare-realize nila na kaya nila, or 'yung pinaghirapan nila, may pinuntahan naman eh, kailangan lang talaga nila tapangan," Tioseco told GMA News Online. Del Pilar had a game-high 20 points from 16 attacks and made four out of JRU's nine blocks, while Ramos, Kyla Jasareno, and Nicole Deala had 14 points apiece. Jerry Lyn Laurente, meanwhile, had 23 excellent sets. Winnie Bedaña had 18 points, while Shai Omipon and Camille Bustamante had 16 points, respectively. JRU improved to 3-14 and will still face Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Sunday before wrapping its season, while Perpetual will take on De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde next on the same day. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

JRU erases nine-point deficit in Set 3 to reassert dominance vs. San Beda
By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News No payback this time as Jose Rizal University repeated over San Beda University, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, to clinch its first win in the second round — and their second overall — in NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball on Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre. The Lady Bombers crawled their way back from nine points down in the third set to complete the sweep and reassert mastery over the Lady Red Spikers, the same team they beat in their one-win outing in the first round. To do so, JRU rode the heroics of lefty spiker Nicole Deala and the towering tandem of Patricia Del Pilar and Kring Batara. Deala led the sweep win with an all-around outing of 15 points anchored on 13 attacks and two aces laced with 11 digs and four receptions. Del Pilar churned out 13 markers highlighted by four blocks while Batara chipped in 11 points. With the win, the Heavy Bombers improved to 2-14 while San Bed slipped to an identical 2-14 card. The two teams, however, are already out of contention and are just fighting for pride at this point. That exactly what transpired for the wards of JRU head coach Mia Tioseco, who erased a 4-13 deficit in the third set to flip the switch and bag their second win of the season. Del Pilar unleashed a quicker before denying Angel Habacon to cut the gap to three, 12-15. But Janelle Bachar rsponded from the opposite side to bring the embattled San Beda to a 16-12 cushion before the second technical timeout. That breather changed the momentum as JRU suddenly went on a 4-0 run to tie things up at 16-all. San Beda regained a slim 18-17 cushion, but JRU once again retaliated with Del Pilar going for the quick hammer to give her side a 20-18 lead. Deala then took off for a powerful spike that caught the scrambling San Beda defense off guard, giving JRU a 23-19 cushion before another attack from her sent the Lady Bombers to the match point. San Beda still made some fightback with two straight points, but Deala finished it off from the left side to seal JRU's sweep win. Habacon paced San Beda with 14 points while Bachar chipped in 12 markers. "Super happy po kami ngayon. Mas naging motivated lang po kami manalo ngayong game and mas nag-enjoy kami ngayon," the 5-foot-11 Del Pilar told GMA News Online. "Sila rin po kasi natalo namin last time so 'yun po 'yung naging motivation na rin namin ngayong game na dapat 'di sila makabawi ngayon." —JMB, GMA Integrated News
