Two arrested in shooting death of 16-year-old Lake Charles College Prep student
Terrell Alfred Two arrests have been made in the death of a 16-year-old shot while at a graduation celebration at a rental home in the University subdivision. Lake Charles Police Deputy Chief Kevin Kirkum said a warrant was served on 20-year-old Terrell Alfred Friday morning. Alfred was already an inmate in the Calcasieu Correctional Center on unrelated charges at the time the warrant was served. He has been charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His bond has been set at $2.7 million. Nineteen-year-old Jaylin Guidroz has also been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities. His bond has been set at $1.2 million. Lake Charles Police previously told the American Press the shooting, which killed Lake Charles College Prep student Mckenzie Rideau, happened just after midnight May 20 in the 500 block of Central Parkway. 'Rideau was in attendance at the graduation party being hosted at the location and detectives have determined that she was not a target of the shooting,' Kirkum told the American Press on Friday. In a Facebook posting made May 21, Lake Charles College Prep Principal Freddie Harrison said Rideau was 'a beloved student whose presence touched every corner of our campus.' 'McKenzie was more than just a student, she was a light,' he wrote. Harrison said Rideau was a member of the school's volleyball team and flag line. She 'brought energy, determination, and joy to every practice, every performance, and every moment in between,' Harrison said. 'Her radiant smile and kind heart made it easy for others to feel seen, welcomed, and accepted.' He said her impact on the school's community is 'immeasurable.' Kirkum said numerous shell casings were recovered from the scene and evidence gathered linked Alfred and Guidroz as the suspects. Additional arrests are pending as detectives continue their investigation, he said. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Lake Charles Police at 337- 491-1311 or anonymously leave a tip on the Lake Charles PD app.

High School Student, 16, Remembered for Her 'Radiant Smile and Kind Heart' After Being Killed During Shooting at Party
A Louisiana teen, McKenzie Rideau, was killed during a shooting at a house party on May 20 She was described by her family as "a smart and beautiful individual with big plans for the future" Rideau was also remembered by the principal of her school, who called her "a beloved student whose presence touched every corner of our campus"A Louisiana community is in mourning after a high school volleyball player was killed this week during a shooting at a house party. During the early morning of Tuesday, May 20, a shooting took place in the area of Central Parkway near Overhill Drive in the city of Lake Charles, the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) confirmed to NBC affiliate KPLC. Authorities identified the victim as a "young lady," per KPLC, and Lake Charles College Prep, a local charter school, later named her as 16-year-old McKenzie Rideau in a social media post. Neighbors told the outlet they believed the shooting took place in a short-term rental unit during a high school graduation party. They added that they heard between 30 and 50 gunshots around midnight. The LCPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for more information on Saturday, May 24. In the social media statement, Lake Charles College Prep Principal Freddie L. Harrison lll wrote, "It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our own, McKenzie Rideau, a beloved student whose presence touched every corner of our campus." "McKenzie was more than just a student, she was a light. As a proud member of the volleyball team and our vibrant flag line, McKenzie brought energy, determination, and joy to every practice, every performance, and every moment in between," he continued. "Her radiant smile and kind heart made it easy for others to feel seen, welcomed and accepted. She had a rare gift for making people feel like they belonged, always encouraging, always uplifting, always trying to help everyone fit in," added the educator of Rideau. Harrison also remembered Rideau for her "compassion, leadership and friendship," as he called on the community to "continue lifting McKenzie's family, friends and teammates." "Let us honor her memory by continuing to lead with kindness, love, and unity just as she did every day," the principal added. Following the shooting, a neighbor, who captured the sound of apparent gunshots on a security camera, recalled hearing "what sounded like fireworks underneath my carport" before the sound of people "taking off in their cars" and screaming. Police confirmed to KPLC that the shooting took place during a large gathering, with dozens of people between the ages of 16 and 22 at the home. 'I can tell you the detectives with the Lake Charles Police Department are working on identifying people who were there, identifying suspects, and they're working very hard," Chief Shawn Caldwell told the outlet. "We have some people of interest, an actual suspect, I don't want to say suspect yet, but we have identified some people, and we still have a lot of work left to do," Caldwell added. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases. The anonymous neighbor also told KPLC that the shooting 'puts me a little more on edge," adding that "no neighborhood is safe in this area" and that people are "dying from useless actions." Friends, family and classmates of Rideau joined forces on May 23 for a balloon release in her honor, and a GoFundMe campaign has since been launched in an effort to support her family. (The campaign has raised roughly $6,000 of a $10,000 goal.) "Please keep our family in your prayers as we mourn the [loss] of McKenzie. If you knew her you knew how much of a loving and outspoken person she was. A smart and beautiful individual with big plans for the future," the fundraiser's description reads, adding that the teen was "loved by so many." "She's gained her wings where she'll reunite with her little brother Prince," the description continues. "We thank you all for the love and support as it does not go unnoticed. Anything is appreciated. Justice4McKenzie ❤️. Services [have not been] announced yet. We will have a date once we get back with the detectives. Thank you!!" Read the original article on People

Barbe girls, LCCP boys win state championships
Lake Charles College Prep's Kalen Antoine won the 300-meter hurdles in 40.04 seconds on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Region 3A-II track and field championship at McNeese State University. (Rodrick Anderson / American Press) The Barbe girls and Lake Charles College Prep boys track and field teams overcame obstacles to win team state championships over the weekend in the state meet at LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge. LCCP had to make up for the loss of its top sprinter to injury, and steady rain all day Friday, to win the Class 3A championship and its first since 2021. 'I'm proud of these kids,' LCCP boys coach Jackie Rhine said. 'You know, they faced adversity. They conquered adversity. And now they have a second championship. A second championship in one year. 'It wasn't a shocker that we had bad weather. We knew it already. Our kids didn't let that deter them. They didn't let it distract them. We knew what we had to do to win the state championship.' And it came down to the final event for the Trailblazers. LCCP trailed Parkview Baptist 60-55. William Plaster, Khel Arvie, Javerion Johnson and Careion Franklin won the 4×400-meter relay by nearly 4 seconds at 3 minutes, 21.9 seconds to beat Parkview 65-60. Rhine had to make adjustments to replace sophomore Ayden Carter on the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. Carter, who was the favorite to win the 100-meter dash, suffered a hamstring injury at last week's regional meet. Franklin, who placed third in the 400, took Carter's spot on the relay teams. LCCP's 0.19-second win over De La Salle in the 4×200 (1:28.39) helped set the tone early in the running events. Kalen Antoine won the 300 hurdles in 40.33. The Barbe girls overcame a disappointing finish in the 4×200 relay to win their first state championship since 2008. Barbe scored 71 points, while St. Joseph's and Alexandria tied for second at 41. Barbe was the top seed in the 4×200 and defending champ but finished fifth. Barbe rebounded to score 30 points over the final six events. Kennedi Burks won her third consecutive 400 gold medal in 53.82 seconds, and Reese Trahan won the 300 hurdles (42.46). The Bucs closed the meet with a dominating win in the 4×400 relay (3:47.63), finishing almost 8 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. 'Since that was in the beginning, I know a lot of the girls were really worried,' Barbe girls head track and field coach Pricilla Ibarra said. 'They weren't happy. They were upset, but they ended up taking a few minutes, calming themselves down, and then they really powered through for their individual events and then the 4×400 later that night also. 'That's really all we could ask for, and it led to this big accomplishment that we've been working for.' Barbe secured an early lead with 39 points in the field events, led by a 1-2 finish in the javelin by freshman Maria LaFleur (125-2) and senior Morgan David (119-1). Class 5A Barbe senior Carter Hooks closed his high school career with his first state championship. Hooks cleared 14-5¼ inches to win the Class 5A pole vault championship. Defending state champion Miller Malley cleared the same height, but Hooks won on the tiebreaker because he needed one attempt to clear the bar. Class 4A Leesville senior Keeton Johnson finished his final season undefeated in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs and nearly led the Wampus Cats to the Class 4A state championship. He scored 25 of runner-up Leesville's 40 points, while Brusly scored 44 points to win the state championship. Johnson won his fourth consecutive 1,600 state championship with a winning time of 4:29.94, and his first 800 gold medal at state in 1:55.52. He also helped lead the Wampus Cats to gold in the 4×400 (3:25.29) and 4×800 relays (8:05.6). Class 3A St. Louis Catholic senior Hannah Boullion added four more gold medals to her career haul and another state record in her final high school meet. Boullion won her third consecutive 400 (55.02) state championship and defended her 200 state title in 24.87. She anchored the Saints to wins in the 4×200 and 4×400 relays. The Saints set the Class 3A record in the 4×200 in 1:39.75, knocking more than a second off the old record of 1:40.86 set by Brusly in 2017. Senior Ella Butler won her second consecutive high jump gold medal at 4-11¾. St. Louis was the runner-up behind Parkview Baptist, 88-74, while LCCP was third at 48 points. The Trailblazers won the 4×100 relay (48.89) and finished second to the Saints in the 4×400 (4:01.92). Class 2A Rosepine senior Amaya Shine took home four medals in her final high school meet on Friday, including two state championships. She narrowly edged North Caddo's Nasiyah Collins for gold in the 100 by 0.004 seconds with a time of 12.2 seconds. She ran a personal-best 24.85 to finish first in the 200. She also ran on the Eagles' second-place 4×200 (1:45) and third-place 4×400 (4:06.56) relay teams. In his first trip to the state meet, Oakdale junior Anjel Moreaux left a champion after winning the Class 2A high jump with a clearance of 6-5½. LCCP wins second consecutive regional track title
Lake Charles College Prep's Kalen Antoine won the 300-meter hurdles in 40.04 seconds on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Region 3A-II track and field championship at McNeese State University. (Rodrick Anderson / American Press) Big points in the field events staked Lake Charles College Prep to an early lead to claim the boys team title at Region 3A-II track and field championships on Monday at McNeese State. LCCP finished with 124 points, while defending Class 3A state champion Glen Oaks was the runner-up with 79 points. The Trailblazers scored 42 points between the high, long and triple jump and led the rest of the field by 22 points before the running events started. Cameron Brazzle and Braylen White (45-3) went 1-2 in the triple jump. Brazzle's career-best jump of 45 feet, 7 ¼ inches moved to the top of the Class 3A rankings. Jaiven Matthews won the high jump with a height of 6-2, while Jordan Dugas was third at 6 feet. William Plaster took third in the long jump (21-9). The Trailblazers went into cruise control on the track. They scored a combined 60 points in the 100-meter dash, 4×200 relay, 4×100 relay, 400 and 300 hurdles to build an insurmountable lead on Glen Oaks to win its second consecutive regional title. Ayden Carter won the 100 with a career-best 10.62-second run, while Kalen Antoine won the 300 hurdles in 40.04. LCCP won the 4×100 (42.57) and 4×200 (1:28.27) relays led by Kai Fontenot, Braylen White, Derrick White and Carter. On the girls side, St. Louis Catholic placed third or better in all four relay events and Hannah Boullion won the 200 (24.93) and 400 dash (56.42), but it wasn't enough to stop Parkview Baptist from winning its second consecutive team title. Parkview scored 107 points, while St. Louis Catholic finished with 89.5. Boullion's win the 400 gave the Saints a 4.5 point lead over the Eagles, but over the next two events – the 300 hurdles and 800 run – Parkview made a 20-point swing to take the lead. The key was a 1-2 finish in the 800 by Lucy Cramer (2:17.44) and Georgia Theriot (2:18.13). South Beauregard's Cebrina Scarlett moved up to No. 2 in Class 3A in the 100 dash with a time of 12.07 seconds.
