Zion man charged with robbing restaurant at knifepoint in Beach Park

A Zion man was arrested and charged in connection with an armed robbery in Beach Park last week. Lake County State's Attorney's Office charged Shane L. Lones, 41, with one count of armed robbery. On Thursday, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Lake County Sheriff's deputies responded to a fast-food restaurant in the 38900 block of North Lewis Road, Beach Park, for an armed robbery. Sheriff's deputies arrived and spoke to the two employees of the restaurant, who were not hurt. Deputies said a man entered the business wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black shoes, and a surgical mask to cover his face. He produced a knife and demanded money. After stealing money from the cash register, he fled on foot. Surveillance footage caught Lones entering a vehicle and leaving the scene. Detectives used Flock cameras in the area to obtain additional information about the vehicle, including its license plate. On Friday afternoon, Zion police officers found Lones in a vehicle near his residence and arrested him. Sheriff's detectives obtained and executed search warrants for Lones' vehicle and apartment, where they recovered the clothing he wore during the robbery. The State's Attorney's Office petitioned to detain Lones while awaiting trial. On Saturday, a judge ordered Lones to be held pending a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Long Grove, Illinois covered bridge hit by a truck yet again

It happened yet again — another truck hit the historic covered bridge in Long Grove, Illinois, north of Chicago. This time, it was not the bridge, but the truck that sustained the most damage. The historic bridge is a main attraction. But business owners say just about every week, a truck gets stuck trying to go through the bridge. "It keeps the town busy. It definitely makes a big scene when it happens," said Rachael Swift, owner of Rachael's Whimsical Boutique in Long Grove. "That becomes a two-, three-hour escapade of trying to get them out from under the bridge." Swift said she saw a truck slam into the bridge as it sped by on Monday. "He didn't look like he was going to slow down, so I ran around and ran outside, and I grabbed my phone and started taking pictures — and you can kind of hear this crunching of him trying to squeeze under the bridge," she said. "Once he got stuck under the bridge yesterday, he tried backing out, and it just sounds like metal crunching up on itself." CBS News Chicago has reported on mishaps involving the covered bridge numerous times. In September 2022, a truck got stuck. The very next week, the same happened to a U-Haul. In March 2023, an Amazon truck couldn't get through. At that time, the Lake County Sheriff's office said it was the 45th time the bridge has been struck since reopening in 2020. The village's visiting center says the iconic Robert Parker Coffin Bridge dates back to the 1840s. The first bridge, according to the Long Grove History website, was a "simple wooden affair" that provided a less messy alternative for those who otherwise would have ridden their horses through Buffalo Creek. The wooden bridge was replaced with a modern truss structure in 1906. The covering, while it may seem like a quaint piece of turn-of-the-last-century Americana too, did not come around until 1972. The bridge was reinforced with a steel structure in 2020 to avoid expensive repairs. That came after it was closed for two years when it was severely damaged by a truck crash in 2018. The Facebook page for the Long Grove covered bridge accident tracker said this was the 66th time the bridge has been hit since 2020. "We'll have some times where it'll get hit once a week, or it'll be a couple of weeks or a month — and then all of a sudden, one will hit it," said Swift. Despite signs stating trucks aren't allowed to go through, Swift believes it will happen again. "It's going to happen. I hate to have to say that, but there's only so much the village and just as business owners we can do," she said. "It really is on the person who's driving the truck and just building that awareness." CBS News Chicago reached out to Long Grove Village President Bill Jacob to see whether the village will be making any changes to prevent this, but we have not heard back.

1 killed, 2 hurt after Jeep collides with classic car in Deer Park, sheriff's say

One person was killed and two others were hurt after a crash Sunday morning in Deer Park, Illinois. The Lake County Sheriff's Office said just before 10:30 a.m., deputies responded to Lake Cook Road and Ferndale Road for a crash with injuries and found two vehicles with major damage. Preliminary investigation indicated that a 2025 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 75-year-old man of Deer Park, was traveling eastbound on Lake Cook Road and was attempting to turn left onto northbound Ferndale Road. At the time, a 1986 Alfa Romero, driven by a 71-year-old man of Mount Prospect, was traveling westbound on Lake Cook Road. The Jeep driver said he did not see the Romero and began to turn left in front of it, causing the two to collide. The Romero driver was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries in critical condition but died shortly after arriving at the hospital. A passenger in the Romero, a 63-year-old woman of Mount Prospect, was also taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries and is cooperating with the investigation, the sheriff's office said. The Lake County Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy on the Romero driver. Investigation into the crash remains ongoing by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.

Illinois elementary school teacher charged with possession of child porn

GURNEE, Ill. (WTVO) — Lake County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Todd Fowler, 47, for allegedly possessing and disseminating child pornography. Fowler has been a teacher and coach at Woodland Elementary School in Gurnee since 2019. He was put on administrative leave as the investigation moves forward. Officers received a tip that Fowler was connected to the dissemination of sexual images and videos of children. He is also accused of sending images of students from social media to other sexual predators. Authorities searched the teacher's residence in the 300 block of Buckingham Drive in Grayslake and seized a device that officials think was used to share child pornography. 'This is a despicable crime, especially when committed by someone entrusted to be a positive influence on our youth,' Sheriff John D. Idleburg said. 'The actions of one individual do not reflect the thousands of hardworking, dedicated teachers and educators in our community.' Fowler is charged with disseminating child pornography and possessing child pornography. Fowler was not granted pretrial release. His next court date is set for May 23.
