Air Force cadet candidate allegedly slain by illegal immigrant honored with full military funeral

The 18-year-old Air Force cadet candidate who was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant in a jet ski accident was honored by the military branch during her Saturday funeral. Ava Moore, 18, was set to begin cadet training at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in a few weeks, but was tragically killed while kayaking on Lake Grapevine in Texas over Memorial Day weekend. Moore was laid to rest with full military honors, according to The Dallas Morning News. Full military funeral honors are bestowed upon those who die while on active duty, among others, according to the military's official website. Air Force Academy cadets are considered to be active-duty military members. Full military funeral honors consist of a minimum of a two-person military service detail who provide three core elements: playing Taps, the folding of the flag, and the flag presentation to family members of the deceased. "We lost an exemplary teammate this weekend – Cadet Candidate Ava Moore, whose passion for leadership and service left an impact on everyone she met," said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, U.S. Air Force Academy Superintendent after Moore's death. "Ava's constant happiness and attitude helped her squadron get through the challenges of the Prep School, and her drive to excel was on display as she sought out leadership positions to improve herself and her team," he said. "Our team is focused on providing support to Ava's family, her Prep School Squadron, the Prep School Women's Basketball team, and the entire Academy family." Moore graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School on May 19, 2025. She was set to become a part of the USAFA Class of 2029. Moore was hit by a jet ski while kayaking on the lake over Memorial Day weekend. The suspected driver of the jet ski and a man who allegedly helped her flee, both illegal immigrants from Venezuela, were arrested in Dallas last Tuesday. The pair reportedly had suitcases packed when they were captured by authorities. Daikerlyn Alejandraa Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 22, was charged with second-degree manslaughter, a felony. Maikel Coello Perozo, 21, is accused of picking her up and driving away from the scene. Authorities allege Perozo hit another vehicle while speeding off. He has been charged with a collision involving damage to a vehicle and hindering apprehension, both misdemeanors. Gonzalez-Gonzalez remains in the Tarrant County Jail on a $500,000 bond as of Tuesday. Perozo remains in the jail on a $3,250 bail. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed detainers on both of them, meaning that when their criminal proceedings and punishments have concluded in the United States, they will be deported.

Illegal aliens arrested in death of Air Force cadet candidate had suitcases packed: report

Packed suitcases were found during the arrests of two illegal aliens charged in the death of an Air Force cadet candidate over the weekend. Over Memorial Day weekend, 18-year-old Ava Moore was killed while kayaking on Lake Grapevine in Texas after she was hit by a jet ski. The suspected driver of the jet ski and a man who allegedly helped her flee, both illegal aliens from Venezuela, were arrested in Dallas Tuesday. Daikerlyn Alejandraa Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 22, was charged with second-degree manslaughter, a felony. Maikel Coello Perozo, 21, is accused of picking her up and fleeing. Authorities allege Perozo hit another vehicle while speeding off. He has been charged with a collision involving damage to a vehicle and hindering apprehension, both misdemeanors. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by FOX 4, the suspects were found with their bags packed at the time of their arrests. Perozo reportedly told police he helped Gonzalez flee so she could avoid being captured. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department led the investigation. President Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security on Thursday slammed the previous administration for open-border policies it says led to the death of the Air Force cadet candidate. "Ava Moore was a patriot serving her country when she was killed by an illegal alien in a hit-and-run over Memorial Day weekend. This senseless tragedy was 100 percent preventable," DHS said in a post on X. "Daikerlyn Gonzalez and Maikel Perozo entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and were released into our interior," the post continued. "The previous administration's open border policies have cost too many Americans their lives. President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to stand with victims of illegal alien crime and their families." At a news conference Wednesday, Joshua Johnson, acting field director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Emergency Removal Operations in Dallas, first confirmed the pair were present in the United States illegally. "It's my understanding that both the individuals crossed the southern border in 2023 or 2024," Johnson said. "They were arrested at the time of entry, processed on a notice to appear and then released on their own recognizance." He said ICE filed detainers for the suspects, and they will be processed for removal after criminal proceedings are concluded in Texas. Moore was remembered as a star basketball player whose lifelong dream was to be a four-star general in the military, according to her coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado. "You know, we talked throughout the course of the year that, at some point in her career, she was going to be a four-star general because she loved it," Ke'sha Blanton told FOX 4. "She made those around her better. "They took a bright, bright star from our lives." Moore was scheduled to begin as an Air Force cadet in the upcoming weeks and was part of the U.S. Air Force Academy's Class of 2029, the school confirmed.

What to know about the death of Air Force prep graduate Ava Moore in a crash on a Texas lake

An 18-year-old woman about to begin her first year at the U.S. Air Force Academy was killed when a personal watercraft hit her kayak on a Texas lake over Memorial Day weekend, setting off a pursuit by law enforcement that ended in the arrests of two people. Ava Moore died following the collision Sunday on Lake Grapevine, a popular boating and fishing destination near Dallas. She had just graduated last week from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Authorities said Wednesday the woman accused of operating the personal watercraft is charged with felony manslaughter. She is accused of fleeing the lake in a vehicle with a man who was charged with two misdemeanors, including one related to hitting two cars as they left the scene. Both are Venezuelans who had entered the U.S. illegally in 2023, authorities said. Here's what to know about the investigation: Moore graduated on May 19 from U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School, and had accepted an appointment to join the academy as a member of its class of 2029, according to a news release from the academy. Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy, said in the news release that Moore's 'passion for leadership and service left an impact on everyone she met.' He said her 'constant happiness and attitude helped her squadron get through the challenges' of prep school and 'her drive to excel was on display as she sought out leadership positions." Moore's family said in a statement that they were thankful for the love, support and prayers they had received. 'This is a difficult time for all involved but also an opportunity for our beautiful girl to continue to impact our community,' the family said. 'Out of this tragedy, God will make good and that only can be accomplished through forgiveness.' The prep school is a 10-month program that offers a select group of enlisted personnel and civilians a potential pathway to become a cadet at the academy, according to an academy spokesperson. The spokesperson said Moore was on the prep school's basketball team. The collision on Lake Grapevine A personal watercraft with two women on board was being driven at a high speed near the shore of a park when it struck Moore's kayak, Texas Game Warden Capt. Joseph Quintero said at a news conference Wednesday. Authorities say the two women on the personal watercraft fled the scene of the collision, and then returned to the park. The personal watercraft's passenger remained there while 22-year-old Daikerlyn Gonzalez Gonzalez left in a vehicle with 21-year-old Maikel Coello Perozo, authorities said. Their vehicle collided with two other vehicles as they fled, authorities said. Gonzalez's passenger on the personal watercraft does not currently face any charges, Quintero said. A police spokesperson said Gonzalez and Perozo were being held at the detention center in Grapevine on Wednesday. The spokesperson did not know if they had attorneys to speak on their behalf. Quintero said the investigation is continuing and more charges could be filed. He said authorities are looking into who owned the personal watercraft. Authorities have no evidence that alcohol was involved in the collision. The suspects Quintero said authorities do not know the relationship between the man and woman arrested. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that both Gonzalez and Perozo are from Venezuela. Gonzalez illegally entered the U.S. in September 2023, was given a notice to appear and released, ICE said. Perozo entered the U.S. in January of that year after arriving at a port of entry in Eagle Pass and was released pending an immigration hearing, the agency said. The statement did not say when they were scheduled to appear. ICE said immigration detainers have been lodged with Grapevine police following the arrests of Gonzalez and Coello.
