KIRTLAND, Ohio (WJW) — Lakeland Community College announced classes were canceled for Monday, June 9, due to a power outage impacting the campus. According to a post on the school's Facebook page, 'All classes, offices, activities and events on campus are cancelled. This includes in-person, online/virtual and hybrid classes.' It wasn't clear what caused the outage or when power was expected to be restored. Additional alerts will be sent to students, faculty and staff should there be future closings or delays. KIRTLAND, Ohio (WJW) — A Northeast Ohio community college is working to close a $2.5 million deficit for it's upcoming fiscal year, affecting jobs and programs along the way. $150,000 lottery winner sold at local store Last week, Lakeland Community College President Sunil Ahuja sent out a letter to faculty updating them on the situation. In the letter he said 14 full-time faculty agreed to voluntarily retire and that 10 faculty members were being laid off. Several health programs, which were not named, are also being closed due to enrollment numbers and small classroom sizes. 'These decisions have been very difficult,' the president wrote. 'They are made in light of the college's enrollment and financial realities and positioning the college for a financially sustainable future.' While some are being let go, the Kirtland-based college plans to hire three full-time faculty for its manufacturing, welding and electrical engineering programs. Meijer to start construction along Geauga Lake, a major redevelopment milestone Ahuja said one of the college's top priorities is to balance its budget. He said the hope is that by making these moves this is the 'last round of layoffs' the college will be making.
