Lakers, Mavericks to play an exhibition game in Las Vegas that they decided to schedule: Will Luka Dončić, Cooper Flagg play?
The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks will play a preseason exhibition game in Las Vegas. This is a decision made not by the NBA, but by the two teams that completed one of the most controversial trades in sports history just months ago when the Mavericks dealt Luka Dončić to the Lakers. Advertisement Since that trade, the Lakers have flamed out of the first round of the playoffs, and the Mavericks have won the NBA Draft lottery. Dallas will presumably select Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, who will be immediately be handed the torch that Dončić carried as the team's franchise player and long-term hope for championship success. Will Luka Dončić actually play in October's Lakers-Mavericks exhibition in Las Vegas? (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images) (Allen J. Schaben via Getty Images) Will Flagg, Dončić or both see the court in the game scheduled for Oct. 15 at T-Mobile Arena? Who knows? But the Lakers and Mavericks seem content to cash in on the hype in a matchup that should garner considerably more attention that your average NBA preseason contest. The Lakers confirmed the existence of the game on Monday. And to be clear, this is a game that both teams chose to schedule, as is custom with the NBA preseason. As The Athletic explained in a feature on the NBA preseason last fall: "Teams arrange their own schedules, pick their own opponents and have their own reasons for doing so. ... There are few rules for the preseason. They don't even play games if they don't want to. The NBA doesn't mandate a minimum number of games, just that teams can't play more than six each year. The rest is up to the teams themselves." When will the Lakers and Mavericks play in a game that actually counts? That's yet to be determined. The NBA schedule generally isn't set until August. Until then, both teams will maintain their collective buzz amid the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

Dallas traded Doncic for Anthony Davis, who is listed as probable with a left adductor strain for tonight's game. The Mavs are looking for a win to stay in the play-in picture, but if the team keeps losing, they can be a lottery team. Lakers' Luka Doncic ejected during loss vs. Thunder after picking up second technical foul
Lakers' Luka Doncic ejected during loss vs. Thunder after picking up second technical foul Luka Doncic was ejected during the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' 136-120 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night at Paycom Center after picking up his second technical foul. The Lakers were leading 108-107 with 7:40 remaining when Doncic appeared to respond to a fan courtside. Doncic picked up his first technical foul with 4:02 left in the third quarter. "It was a weird couple of minutes after that, starting with the ejection," Lakers star LeBron James told reporters. "I don't know why the ref was taking it personal. He had already given Luka one (technical) and Luka knew that. "Luka was going back and forth at that time with a fan sitting courtside. ... The ref took it upon himself to think that it was vs. him, whatever the case may be." Luka Doncic was ejected after picking up a second technical foul. — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) April 9, 2025 Doncic now has 14 technical fouls on the season, putting him two away from receiving a one-game suspension. Crew chief Tony Brothers told pool reporter Cliff Brunt of the Associated Press that Doncic received his first technical foul after the Lakers guard "directed profanity at a game official." For the second technical, Doncic "looked directly at an official and used vulgar language." Whether Doncic was speaking to the official or not, he has quite the history with Thunder fans, going back to last season's Western Conference semifinals, when he led the Mavericks to a 4-2 series win against OKC. "I love it," Doncic said last year of playing in OKC. "When they chant, 'Luka sucks,' it gets me going." OKC (65-14) will close out the regular season with a three-game road trip, starting Wednesday night at Phoenix. Los Angeles (48-31) will visit the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, marking Doncic's first trip back to American Airlines Center since February's shocking Lakers-Mavericks trade.

Tuesday's Lakers-Mavericks game brought in record-setting audiences
Tuesday's Lakers-Mavericks game brought in record-setting audiences TNT Sports' networks and platforms powered record-setting audiences for the highly-anticipated @dallasmavs-@Lakers showdown last night. ⤵️ — TNT Sports U.S. PR (@TNTSportsUS) February 26, 2025 It seems like when most people discuss the state of the NBA these days, most of the talk is negative, and a lot of that negative talk seems to center around the league's declining television ratings. But recently, there have been some reasons to feel optimistic that those ratings may be in the process of improving. Luka Doncic's first game as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 10 got strong ratings, and the Lakers' big win on Saturday over the Denver Nuggets did even better. In fact, that game this past Saturday was the most-watched program that night across all of television. On Tuesday, the Lakers took on the Dallas Mavericks, Doncic's old team, in a much-anticipated matchup and won by a final score of 107-99. That game, which was televised on TNT's network of outlets, which includes the Max streaming platform, was the most-watched NBA game on cable television outside of opening night, and it won the night in a few key demographic groups. In fact, it was Max's most-watched regular-season NBA telecast of all time. Doncic, a global superstar who perhaps hasn't even started to play the best basketball of his career yet, wearing a Purple and Gold uniform seems to be a big boon for the NBA. Perhaps the best ratings he will generate for the league are yet to come, and perhaps those peak ratings won't even come this season.
