From Medinipur To Mount Everest: Kolkata Police Constable Scales World's Highest Peak

Last Updated: Lakshmikanta Mandal reached the peak alongside Nepal's visually impaired mountaineer Chhonzin Angmo and Indian mountaineer Geeta Samota News18 Lakshmikanta Mandal, a constable with the West Bengal Police and currently posted as the Personal Security Officer (PSO) to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, has successfully scaled the Mount Everest in a remarkable feat of courage and determination. Hailing from a remote village in Medinipur, Mandal reached the peak of Everest at around 8.30am on Monday, marking a moment of immense pride for the Kolkata Police and the entire West Bengal police force. Mandal's journey began when Verma, who was then posted as DIG in North Bengal, introduced him to mountaineering, and the two trained together in the basics of the sport. Encouraged by the senior officer, Mandal later pursued an advanced mountaineering course and continued to nurture his passion. Speaking to News18, Verma said: 'This is an incredible achievement. I couldn't sleep last night—I kept tracking his progress. He used to video call from the base camp every day. Last year, we sent him to Ladakh for further training. He had the passion and the perseverance, and today, he has done it. This is a huge motivation for the entire force." The expedition was made possible with the collective support of the police force. The Kolkata Police Welfare Fund raised Rs 40 lakh to support Mandal's Everest mission. His summit was part of an expedition organised by Pioneer Adventure, and he successfully reached the peak alongside Nepal's visually impaired mountaineer Chhonzin Angmo and Indian mountaineer Geeta Samota. Back in Medinipur, the police have informed Mandal's family, who are overwhelmed with joy. His achievement has not only brought honour to his village and family but also stands as an inspiration for countless others in the force and beyond. From a quiet village in West Bengal to the top of the world, Lakshmikanta Mandal's journey is a testament to resilience, discipline, and the power of encouragement. "The team with Mandal and Angmo left Camp IV on Sunday night and reached the summit around 8.30 am on Monday. The skies were clear but there were biting winds," said an official of Pioneer Adventures over the phone. According to sources, the team descended to Camp IV by the afternoon and rested there. Both climbers are in good health and are likely to start descending to Camp II on Tuesday. "He climbed with Tenzing Sherpa. Their story is more than a climb. It is a powerful reminder that no barrier is too big when the human spirit leads the way," Pioneer Adventures posted on its Facebook page after announcing the successful summits. According to sources, Mandal plans to climb Mount Lhotse next. Mandal is a constable with the 3rd battalion of the State Armed Police. He started rigorous training over the past few years after he climbed Pinnacle Peak in Ladakh (6,930 metres). "He completed basic and advanced courses in search-and-rescue and started climbing mountains higher than 6,000 m. He went to Ladakh to climb Pinnacle Peak with us. He is a skilful climber," said Everest summiteer Ramesh Roy. Commissioner Verma said that Mandal has set an example for the force. "This requires immense mental strength, along with physical capability. He climbed several peaks before. Last year, he conquered a peak in Ladakh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We were aware of his training for the Everest goal. He was supported in every possible way, including financially. Although this is his personal achievement, it is a matter of pride for our police force. " "This is the fourth Everest summit from Bengal in the past four days. The last three summits were on the same day, May 15. A lot of climbers from the state are attempting Mount Everest now. We are expecting a few more major climbs from Bengal mountaineers on other peaks this year," said Satyarup Siddhanta, Everest summiteer and Guinness record holder.
