Bargain Hunt star Anita Manning's children as she opens up on mother-daughter business
Anita Manning has become a regular face on TV, but what is known of the Bargain Hunt star's family life away from the show? Anita Manning, a renowned antiques expert hailing from Scotland, is a familiar face on BBC One's Bargain Hunt. The 77 year old Glaswegian holds the distinction of being Scotland's first female auctioneer. The presenter, who has also made appearances on Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip, was introduced to auctions by her father during her childhood. She ventured into the antiques business in the 1970s, although she initially had different career aspirations. She pursued dance studies and subsequently became a teacher before tying the knot and starting a family. The expert is a mother to two children, her daughter Lala and son Luke. Upon becoming a mother, she expanded her knowledge of antiques by buying furniture at auctions. She then embarked on travels across the country, buying and selling furniture. Anita and her daughter Lala jointly manage the Glasgow-based auction house Great Western Auctions, a partnership that has been ongoing since 1989. Her son resides in Hong Kong, and the star is accustomed to her family living in various parts of the globe. Her own mother spent the final 35 years of her life in Australia. Over the years, she has gleaned much from her family and even set a record for the highest profit earned on a single auction item. In a remarkable turn of events on 'Antiques Road Trip' in 2016, she snagged a Buddha statue for a mere £50 and later sold it for a staggering £3,800. Her astonishing find however was topped by her co-star Paul Laidlaw just the following year. Intriguingly, when recounting how she decided on her career path, she mentioned: "Although I have always been interested in Antiques, and loved their sense of history, their beauty, craftsmanship and design, I did not start my working life aiming to be an auctioneer or be involved in the Antiques trade (in fact sometimes I still wonder what I'm going to be when I grow up)." She went on to explain: "But fate put the opportunity in my path and being an adventurous sort of gal I changed direction and set up Great Western Auctions with my daughter Lala in Glasgow in 1989, becoming one of Scotland's first woman auctioneers." She also expressed her gratitude for her profession stating: "I am so glad I did because I have the best job in the world and it has been a continual joy to handle wonderful objects on a daily basis and investigate their place in history." This expert has developed a special fondness for paintings, with a particular interest in works of Scottish origin. Anita, alongside her daughter Lala, inaugurated Great Western Auctions Ltd in Glasgow. They began their journey with a modest setup situated in the bustling West End of Glasgow, with an intimate team comprising themselves and one other staff member. Since then, the mother-daughter team has relocated twice to cater for their expanding enterprise. They now employ roughly 14 staff members, all of whom are specialists and auction administrators. Bargain Hunt is broadcast on weekdays on BBC One at 12.15pm.

Lidl teams up with Alan Cumming in search for new Scottish self-service voice
Lidl has brought a Hollywood touch to its competition that aims "to champion the quirks of the Scottish accent." Lidl has been on the hunt for a Scottish voice for its new self-service checkouts. To help find the winner, the supermarket has teamed up with Hollywood royalty Alan Cumming. The budget German grocer recently unveiled a nationwide search that encouraged Scots to submit a recording of themselves reciting popular phrases from the bagging area in a competition that aims to "champion the quirks of the Scottish accent." The search, which saw 5,000 hopeful Scots enter, has now been narrowed down to 10 entrants, with voices from the likes of Aberdeen, Cupar, Kinross and Oban. Ahead of of the public vote that is now open, the supermarket giant has teamed up with the host of The Traitors US and his trusty pet companion Lala in a tongue-in-cheek video that offers hilarious critique on the finalist's. Taking place in a Traitors-esque style castle based in the Scottish Highlands, the Perthshire -born actor, who has also starred in the likes of X-Men and The Good Wife, brings his noted charm when listening to all the voices that are up for the coveted title. And now the people of Scotland can have their own say on who to crown as the winner, as they can choose the best voice by casting their vote on the Lidl website here before voting ends at 5pm on July 29. Speaking about the Lidl hopefuls, Alan said: "It's high time our self-checkouts had a bit more character and Scottish flair - and let's be honest, who doesn't want to be told that they've got an unexpected item in the bagging area by someone who sounds like their favourite cousin from Fife or sassy auntie from Glasgow? "I had an utterly delightful time listening to the 10 auditionees give it laldy; some were bold, some were bizarre, others would have me scanning in an instant! It's a proper rollercoaster of accents, intonations and glorious Scottishness. "But now the power is in your hands. This isn't just about picking a winner - it's a celebration of who we are, how we speak and our ability to have a bit of a laugh while we do it. So don't dilly dally and get voting!' Marco Ivone, Regional Director of Lidl GB in Scotland added: "We're incredibly proud to be investing almost £3 million to bring self-checkouts to every Lidl store in Scotland by the end of the year. "This is part of our commitment to continuously improving the shopping experience for our customers, including enhanced choice on which checkout they use. "What's truly brilliant, though, is the response to our 'Unexpected Scottish Voice' competition. Over 5,000 people from every corner of Scotland have stepped up to the mic, which just shows how much pride people take in their local dialects - and how game we are to have a bit of fun with it too. "We can't wait to give the winner their moment on our self-checkouts; adding further Scottish flavour to the Lidl shopping experience." The nationwide search came after YouGov research found that 81 percent of Scottish shoppers prefer the choice between a staffed till and a self-service checkout. In response, Lidl began adding self-service checkouts to all its stores across Scotland in a staggering £3million investment that also rolled the convenient tills out across England and Wales. Scottish shoppers can officially choose the next voice of Scotland's self-service checkouts by casting their vote on the Lidl website. Voting ends at 5pm on Tuesday, July 29.

Mom's bizarre travel hack keeps baby amused on plane
When it comes to keep babies quiet on the plane, parents will do just about anything. Dummies, toys, iPads. But one mom has changed the game with potentially the cheapest hack of all time. Who needs toys when you've got romaine? 3 The influencer has one viral with a TikTok, suggesting a travel hack we doubt many parents have thought of before. lalaleluu/TikTok 'If you don't pack a head of lettuce for your next flight for your baby, what are you even doing?' new mom Lala asks. The influencer has one viral with a TikTok, suggesting a travel hack we doubt many parents have thought of before. It was her 8-month-old daughter's first time on a plane and Lala wanted to board totally prepared. Luckily, they managed to time the flight perfectly with her nap, which is a big tick already. 'She slept right through takeoff, but eventually she woke up,' Lala said. So… Now what? At home during meal times, the little one is often given a piece of lettuce to keep occupied. Turns out it works in transit too. 'I thought if it works at home, why would it not work on a plane?' Lala explained. 'We were on the plane for almost three hours. I packed a whole head just in case.' Cause Why Not? 3 At home during meal times, the little one is often given a piece of lettuce to keep occupied. lalaleluu/TikTok Lala said the baby girl loves to tear things. She loves to rip into bread (which is a little too messy for a plane) and paper (but they need to ensure none of that winds up in her mouth) Which makes lettuce the perfect option. It's safe, healthy, has a fun texture and perfect for working on developmental skills. 'This kept her occupied almost the entire flight. She had so much fun,' Lala said. Unsurprisingly, the comment section popped off. 'YOU WERE BORN TO BE A MOM!' one person exclaims. 'I have a 14 hour flight with my baby next month. I'll just bring a whole field,' another agrees. 3 'This kept her occupied almost the entire flight. She had so much fun,' Lala said. lalaleluu/TikTok A third praised: 'you are such smart parents!' The best part? It's entirely mess free! 'When it's time to clean up, you can just eat it,' Lala shared. 'This what I'm not only entertaining my baby, but I'm also getting my greens in.' It might not make it into the official travel essentials list anytime soon, but desperate times calls for creative moms. Is this even allowed? In Australia, passengers are generally allowed to bring solid foods onboard, including fresh produce like lettuce.
