Trial in 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case delayed again after judge's transfer
The trial in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots has been delayed again following the recent reshuffle of 135 judges in courts of the national capital, The Indian Express reported. The case was at the stage of arguments on charges. The trial was expected to begin after the arguments were heard. Five of the 18 persons accused in the matter had completed their arguments, the newspaper reported. They will have to present their arguments before the court again. The special public prosecutors, who had also completed their arguments on behalf of the Delhi Police, will also have to present their arguments again. This is the second time that the case has been delayed because of a routine transfer of the judge, The Indian Express reported. On Monday, Additional Sessions Judge Lalit Kumar of the Karkardooma court directed the special public prosecutors and counsels of the persons accused in the case to submit their schedule relating to the timeframe and the manner in which they will present their arguments, especially the time to be taken by them, Bar and Bench reported. The matter will be heard next on Friday. Kumar assumed charge as the judge on May 30 after the reshuffle in the Delhi district judiciary. The earlier arguments in the case, which began in September, had taken place before the previous judge Sameer Bajpai. Clashes had broken out in North East Delhi in February 2020 between supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act and those opposing it. The violence left 53 dead and hundreds injured. The Delhi Police has claimed that the violence was part of a larger conspiracy to defame the Narendra Modi government and was plotted by those who organised the protests against the contentious citizenship law. Eighteen persons have been booked under sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Indian Penal Code. The persons include activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Natasha Narwal, Meeran Haider Tahir Hussain and Ishrat Jahan, and Shifa-Ur-Rehman.

North-east Delhi riots case: repeated judicial reshuffles delay trial
NEW DELHI Five years after the north-east Delhi riots of 2020, which left 53 dead and over 700 injured, the trial in the 'larger conspiracy' case will begin afresh due to a recent judicial reshuffle in the Capital's lower courts. On June 2, the case was listed for arguments on charges. The court was informed that the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) had completed his submissions, and five accused had also argued on the point of charge. However, the matter will now restart under Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Lalit Kumar, following the transfer of ASJ Sameer Bajpai. The latest reshuffle, involving the transfer of 135 judges, marks another setback in one of Delhi's most high-profile trials. 'Since the court has been transferred, the prosecution and the accused persons and their counsels seek some time to consult with each other regarding the time frame to address the arguments,' said ASJ Kumar, while directing all parties to submittheir time estimates for arguments by June 6. Originally filed by Delhi Police's Special Cell in 2020, the case invokes provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), among others. Key accused include Tahir Hussain, student activists Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, and Natasha Narwal, among others. After months of delay in the probe, the chargesheetwas filed in June 2023, and arguments began in 2024 before Judge Bajpai. Prior to him, the case was heard for months by ASJ Amitabh Rawat, who was transferred last year. With Judge Kumar now assigned to the case, both prosecution and defence teams are expected to resubmit their argument timelines and reconvene on June 6. The court is likely to push for a time-bound hearing to avoid delays.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The next hearing of the matter is scheduled for June 6. The special public prosecutor informed the court that the prosecution has already completed its arguments, and even five accused persons have completed their arguments on the point of charge. "This court considers it fit that a considerable time has already lapsed, and therefore, arguments on the point of charge have to be expedited. Since the court has been transferred, the prosecution and the accused persons and their counsels seek some time to consult with each other regarding the time frame to address the arguments," the judge said. The FIR in the case was registered in 2020 by Delhi Police's Special Cell. Arguments on charge began last year and were being heard by additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai. However, an administrative order was published by Delhi High Court on May 30, notifying the transfer of 135 judges, including Bajpai. This new development means that the prosecution will again take Kumar through all the relevant documents, including the 17,000-page chargesheet. The arguments will be reheard by Kumar. The accused in the case are Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Natasha Narwal, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Tahir Hussain, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd Saleem Khan, Athar Khan and Faizan Khan. Delhi Police has invoked stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against them. Most of the accused have been in jail for more than five years.

Comp science fav choice among JEE (A) toppers
Pune: Experts from the education field on Monday said that the cut-off after the JEE (Advanced) results were out this year will remain low compared to the last two years because of a higher difficulty level in the papers' pattern and language. Based on the reduced cut-off this year, a student scoring 74 marks out of 360 got a rank in the Common Ranks List (CRL). Students in the city excelled in the exam, and most want a computer science seat, preferably at IIT Bombay. The results of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced were announced on Monday. Candidates will be admitted to Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and other engineering institutes in India. Educator Lalit Kumar said, "As expected, the cut-off has fallen this year. More than the complexity of the problems, the pattern and language added to the difficulty. Nearly 47% of the paper consisted of numerical value-type questions, leaving no room for partial marks — even if a student was 99.9% correct in the application of concepts and execution, a 0.1% error resulted in zero marks. Unlike multiple-choice questions, where options can offer some guidance, these numerical questions demanded absolute precision. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 New Tablet Computer Tablet Shop Now Undo " A total of 1.8 lakh candidates appeared in both Papers 1 and 2 in JEE Advanced 2025 held on May 18. In this exam, 54,378 candidates qualified. Out of the total qualified candidates, 9,404 are women candidates. Rajit Gupta of the IIT Delhi zone emerged topper with 332 marks, and Devdutta Majhi of the IIT Kharagpur zone was among the women toppers with a CRL of 16 and 312 marks. Durgesh Mangeshkar, another education expert, said, "The All-India rankings and marks-percentage correlation for the 2025 exam roughly mirrored the JEE Advanced 2021 trend. This year's exam was significantly more difficult than that of 2024. Students who scored 60% and above found a place in the top 1,000 ranks." The aggregate marks are calculated as the sum of the marks obtained in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Candidates have to satisfy the subject-wise as well as the aggregate qualifying marks to be included in a rank list. Parth Rane, a candidate from Bhusawal who prepared in Pune for JEE for the past two years, secured 251 rank and said that he found the question paper of 2023 much easier than 2025. "I over-attempted the questions, so I missed the chance to score higher. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with my current score. I am going to go to IIT Madras for a computer science seat," he said. Branch head of a coaching institute in the city, Arun Jain said, "The qualifying cut-off in JEE Advanced 2025 dropped by nearly 10% compared to 2024. This decline indicates a relatively more challenging paper this year. Based on student preferences, computer science at IIT Bombay is the most sought-after and usually closes at AIR 61. The second most preferred is IIT Delhi CS, followed by IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras CS branches. " Aggregate marks: 360 (180 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2) Mathematics: 120 (60 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2) Physics: 120 (60 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2) Chemistry: 120 (60 each in Paper 1 and Paper 2)
