Emma Raducanu reveals inner strength after ‘getting stuck in' during Madrid Open victory

Emma Raducanu admitted to not being at her best, but was pleased to mark her return to action with a straight-sets win over Suzan Lamens at the Madrid Open. The 22-year-old took a break from the WTA Tour following her run to the Miami Open quarter-finals last month and instead took part in a training block with Mark Petchey ahead of the clay-court swing. It appeared to pay dividends as British number two Raducanu opened her campaign in the Spanish capital with a 7-6 (4) 6-4 victory over Lamens to continue her good form since she started an 'informal' partnership with Andy Murray's former coach Petchey. Raducanu said in her on-court interview: 'I know I had to play really well to win and although it wasn't always my best, I got stuck in at the right moments. 'I'm proud of how I competed. It is a strength of mine when I can use it. 'It's for sure different stepping into the competition, especially on clay. I haven't played many matches on this surface, so it does feel a little foreign to me. 'I'm happy with how I kind of worked my way into the match. I played an opponent in great form who has won a lot of matches on clay so I knew I had to play really well to win. I don't think I played my best level but I think I competed really well.' Lamens had been part of the Netherlands team which lost to Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup earlier this month – a play-off Raducanu elected to miss in order to train before the clay-court part of the season – and broke first in this round-one tie to move 3-2 up. Raducanu broke straight back and showed impressive resolve to save three break points soon before she claimed the tie-break with a run of four straight points. World number 73 Lamens again made a strong start to the second set and moved 2-0 up, but Raducanu responded to break twice and served out at the first time of asking. The victory marked Raducanu's first in Madrid for three years and set up a second-round meeting with Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who is seeded 24th.

Emma Raducanu opens her clay-court season with battling win

Raducanu will face Marta Kostyuk in the second round in Madrid - Reuters/Juan Medina Emma Raducanu showed plenty of grit as she fist-pumped and yelled her way to victory in her first match of the clay-court season. Against Suzan Lamens' powerful forehand, Raducanu progressed 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at the Madrid Open – coming back from a break down in both sets as well as in the tie break. It means Raducanu's tie-break record is 6-1 this year. Advertisement It was not the same form that saw her through to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, but it was effective enough to overcome Lamens, who had beaten British No 1 Katie Boulter on the same surface in the Billie Jean King Cup last week. 'I know I had to play really well to win and although it wasn't always my best, I got stuck in at the right moments,' Raducanu said. 'I'm proud of how I competed. It is a strength of mine when I can use it.' A month ago in her last competition in Miami, Raducanu overcame world No 10 Emma Navarro and ensured she accrued enough ranking points to climb back into the world's top 50 for the first time since her double wrist surgery in the summer of 2023. Advertisement On the clay in Madrid, Raducanu showed exactly how far she has come in the past 12 months. A year ago, she was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Maria Lourdes Carle, who had just one WTA Tour win to her name, and made 19 unforced errors. Raducanu, then ranked 221 in the world, was lambasted by her Billie Jean King Cup captain Anne Keothavong and told to 'work harder'. This year, Raducanu chose not to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup and was instead coming off a mini-training block with Mark Petchey, who has to fit coaching sessions around his commentary duties at the Tennis Channel. In a performance punctuated by emphatic fist pumps and conversations with her box, Raducanu showed resolve to fight back whenever it was asked of her. The people in the box have changed throughout the years and in Spain Petchey was joined by Raducanu's former childhood mentor Jane O'Donoghue. Raducanu looked at that box for guidance, including a lengthy exchange as she shouted across the width of the court during a drinks break. But whatever the method, it is clear that the relaxed environment and a warm-up that included passing a football and spikeball is working for her. Mark Petchey has been coaching Raducanu recently on an ad-hoc basis - Getty Images/Clive Brunskill Five deuce-point game Crucially in the match itself, Raducanu never let Lamens, the world No 73, get away from her. At four games apiece in the first set and 15-40 down on serve, Raducanu fought back with powerful forehands and calmness at the net to take it to deuce. It was a tight game but she settled it with a volley to avoid going behind at a crucial moment. Advertisement Raducanu's self-encouragement was so evident that at one point Lamens elected to emulate her opponent with a cry of her own, although it did not turn the course of the match. One game in particular epitomised the Briton's fighting spirit. With the match poised at 3-3 in the second set, she then forced five deuce points, hitting back each time Lamens took an advantage on her serve. On her first break point of the mammoth game, after Lamens threw her racket in frustration, Raducanu celebrated taking the opportunity with a clenched fist. Although she was broken back immediately, she went on to win the next two games and the match, to set up a second round meeting with Marta Kostyuk, the Ukrainian powerful hitter and 24th seed. Advertisement The Madrid Open is the most important tournament on clay in the build up to the French Open at the end of the month. 03:37 PM BST Marta Kostyuk awaits Raducanu can look forward to a second-round meeting with the 24th seed Marta Kostyuk. Raducanu came out on top in straight sets. 03:29 PM BST Raducanu wins 7-6, 6-4 Raducanu wins the opening point as Lamens goes long with a groundstroke from the baseline. Nice drop shot, helped by a net cord, from Lamens sees her get to 15-15. Big serve from Raducanu gets the Briton to 30-15 and then a wild forehand from Lamens brings up two match points for Raducanu. The Briton then rushes the Dutchwoman with a cross-court approach shot to go 15-40 before Lamens saves the first break point. Raducanu takes the game on her second break point and will serve for the match after the sitdown. 03:21 PM BST Winning the important points Sometimes it's not about the number of points you win, but which points you win, and that mammoth game with five deuce points was enough to prove that. Fighting back countless times when Lamens had the advantage, Raducanu breaks with her first break point of the game. 03:20 PM BST Raducanu* 7-6, 4-4 Lamens Lamens races out to a 0-40 lead after a combination of winners and forced errors from the Raducanu racket. Advertisement Raducanu then gets to 15-40 after a Lamens error but Lamens does break as Raducanu sprays a backhand out wide. Back on serve in this second set. 03:15 PM BST Raducanu 7-6, 4-3 Lamens* A deep forehand winner sees Raducanu get to 15-15 which draws a big 'come on' from the Briton. Lamens then wins the next point and responds with her own 'come on'. A huge forehand return winner sees Raducanu get to 30-40. The Briton then gets to deuce after drawing another error from Lamens. A casual-looking backhand volley gives Lamens advantage before Raducanu hits another return winner to get back to deuce. Just as she did in the first set, as soon as she is broken, she goes on the attack and avoids finding herself significantly behind in the match. Raducanu has not played since making a run to the quarter-finals in Miami last month where she picked up impressive wins against world No 10 Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova before bowing out to Jessica Pegula in three sets. Rather than play any of the clay WTA 250 or 500-level events ahead of Madrid, Raducanu decided to fit in a mini-training block instead. The Briton has arrived at WTA 1000 without an official coach but will be accompanied by her long-time mentor Jane O'Donoghue. Raducanu has also confirmed she intends to continue her coaching partnership with Mark Petchey on an ad hoc basis. Advertisement Lamens, currently ranked 73rd in the world, already has six clay-court matches under her belt this season. The 25-year-old from the Netherlands, who reached a career high ranking this year (65), beat British No 1 Katie Boulter in Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers earlier this month. Lamens also made a run to the semi-finals in Rouen last week, beating the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Linda Noskova en route. Raducanu is making her third appearance in Madrid. Her best result came in 2022 where she made the round of 16 – she was the ninth seed that year. Last year she fell in the first round to Argentinian qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle in straight sets. Lamens is making her debut and this is the pair's first meeting on the WTA Tour. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
