Robinson and Carson strike but Sussex let advantage slip
Sussex let the initiative slip after putting Somerset in at Taunton. Tom Lammonby hit 60 and 19-year-old Archie Vaughan a career-best 70 not out as a shuffled Somerset batting line-up posted 317 for six in warm sunshine after losing the toss in the Rothesay County Championship Division One match. James Rew contributed 46 and Tom Abell 42 on a wicket offering just enough assistance to seam and spin to keep the Sussex bowlers interested throughout the day. There were two wickets each for Ollie Robinson and Jack Carson as the visiting attack kept a tight rein on the scoring rate for most of the three sessions. With the pitch an inviting shade of green, it was no surprise when Sussex skipper John Simpson elected to field first, despite cloudless skies and a short boundary on the town side of the ground. CLICK HERE FOR SCORECARD There was a surprise for home supporters when Josh Davey and skipper Lewis Gregory, both more used to operating in the lower order, marched out as a new opening partnership, keen to help their side overcome some poor starts in Championship cricket. They had taken the score to 21 in the sixth over when Gregory edged a defensive push off Nathan McAndrew to Tom Clark at second slip and departed for 15. But the experiment could be deemed a success as Davey settled in to play with patience and sound technique. He and Lammonby put together a half-century stand off 109 balls and it wasn't until the 26th over that Sussex struck again, Davey, on 28, judged to have feathered a back-foot defensive shot off Robinson to wicketkeeper Simpson, who took a good low catch. Rew had progressed to 46 when attempting to drive a full ball from off-spinner Carson, who was finding some turn, and edging to Tom Haines at slip to make it 149 for three. A single off the same bowler took Lammonby to an impressive 120-ball fifty, including 5 fours, but he too perished unexpectedly with the score on 176, caught behind nicking a back-foot defensive shot off Carson. Abell was dropped at slip on 13 off the left-arm spin of James Coles, but Sussex continued to make inroads as Tom Banton fell for six, caught at slip off Fynn Hudson-Prentice. Abell fell in the third over with the second new ball, fending a ball from Robinson to Clark at second slip, just when he was starting to flow.

As ever at the Oval, the wicket had a good covering of grass and it was no surprise that for the 18th consecutive first-class or Test match there, the team winning the toss elected to top order have struggled in the first innings recently. Against Sussex a fortnight ago they were 79-7, and they slumped to 96-7 against Hampshire last could have been in similar strife had it not been for Lammonby and Vaughan, who did well at times just to survive, never mind construct an important alliance, after Sean Dickson had to retire when he was hit on the right hand in Gus Atkinson's first ball beat the bat regularly as Atkinson and Dan Worrall produced Test-quality new-ball spells. Vaughan had a let-off on 17 when he pushed at Worrall's out-swinger, but Dan Lawrence shelled the catch at third was brief relief when Atkinson was replaced by Clark whose first three overs went for 22, but no-one epitomised the durability of Surrey's attack than the 34-year-old, whose figures across his next four spells were an excellent 5-46 from 21.1 overs. Surrey finally broke through in the third over after lunch. Atkinson produced a fine delivery which nipped away at decent pace and Vaughan (36) was held at second got a deserved success with a ball which shaped away that Tom Abell edged low to second slip for a duck, but Lammonby and Tom Banton got stuck in for the next 20 overs although aggressive shots were rare in their third-wicket stand of returned to remove Banton for 26, turned around by a straightish delivery and Lammonby played his first poor shot when he moved across his stumps to Worrall and had his leg-stump pegged back. He'd faced 173 balls with seven pace proved too much for James Rew who played on for, before Clark struck with successive deliveries after tea. Kasey Aldridge (14) was bowled around his legs aiming towards fine leg and Migael Pretorious bowled groping forward without did not look as if Somerset would make 200 but Gregory and Davey prospered as the bowlers finally tired. It was the redoubtable Clark who came back to break the stand when he nipped one back into Davey's pads. Jack Leach was expertly taken down the legside by Ben Foakes – the 500th dismissal of his first-class career - but the day ended with Dickson returning to help Gregory, who hit three sixes and five fours, add a further 33.

He found the edge through to morning looked like it would end fairly even at 93-3 around 10 minutes until lunch, but Abbott returned to make it clear who the session belonged to with Banton could not have been more unlucky with his wicket.
