Lana Del Rey's Early Career Smash Is A Timely Hit Yet Again

Lana Del Rey's 'Summertime Sadness' returns to the U.K.'s Official Streaming chart as warmer weather ... More boosts plays, helping Born to Die climb three tallies. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 07: Lana Del Rey attends W Magazine and Louis Vuitton's Academy Awards Dinner at a Private Residence on March 07, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor W Magazine) Lana Del Rey has been promoting her upcoming album for almost a year now, and she's already delivered a handful of singles from the project. Fans still don't know what it will be called or when it will arrive, as she has changed its release date and title multiple times. While anticipation builds for the alternative superstar's next studio effort, her followers continue to revisit the project that started it all, and what may be considered her breakout hit single. This week in the United Kingdom, Del Rey claims one charting single, as 'Summertime Sadness' returns to the Official Streaming chart, and it's not hard to guess why. The tune naturally sees a spike in activity as spring transitions into summer, and it's one of a handful of cuts by Del Rey that have reached well beyond her core fanbase. Streams of the popular composition — which was made famous in part by a Cedric Gervais remix — increase when the weather turns warm. In the past, 'Summertime Sadness' has only peaked at No. 77 on the Official Streaming chart, which ranks the most successful tunes on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and others across the U.K. It has spent 30 weeks on the tally throughout its lifetime. 'Summertime Sadness' is featured on Del Rey's breakout album Born to Die. That set can almost always be found on the charts in the U.K., so it's not shocking to see it appear on multiple lists. This week, the project climbs — perhaps thanks to an increase in plays of the single. Born to Die improves on all three rankings on which it appears, albeit slightly. It gains the most ground on the Official Albums Sales chart, jumping from No. 65 to No. 50. It almost mirrors that movement on the Official Physical Albums list, pushing ahead 14 spaces to also settle at No. 50. The title, which helped introduce Del Rey and her signature alternative pop style back in 2012, only manages to advance a pair of spots on the Official Albums chart, where it comes in at No. 56.

Benito Skinner's new show Overcompensating is like 'queer Never Have I Ever'

From Pitch Perfect to Community, so many movies and TV shows have mined the dramatic and hilarious potential of those first few days on campus where new students get to re-invent themselves. But despite everything that's come before it, Benito Skinner's new series Overcompensating manages to tread new ground. Today on Commotion, culture writers Chris Murphy and Jackson Weaver join guest host Rad Simonpillai to talk about why the Prime Video show is so refreshing. We've included some highlights below, edited for length and clarity. For the full discussion, listen and follow Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud on your favourite podcast player. WATCH | Today's episode on YouTube: Rad: Chris, I'd never heard of Benito Skinner before this show, but I understand millions of people follow him on social media. So for those of us who haven't heard of him, tell me more about what made him pop. What made him stand out from all the other people on TikTok that are doing these kinds of celebrity impersonations? Chris: Well, I was going to say, you obviously haven't been on TikTok if you haven't heard of bennydrama, Benito Skinner. But yeah, he's really a classic character comedian. He loves impersonating people in pop culture: Kourtney Kardashian, Lana Del Rey, Jennifer Coolidge, Shawn Mendes. And he also has original characters … and just a wealth of different personalities that he embodies. I think the thing that sets him apart is that they're all very funny, but it never feels like he's really making fun of them in a mean way. A lot of these people who he does impersonate on TikTok have embraced him and have taken him in as one of their own. So he films all these videos with the Kardashians, and Jennifer Coolidge and all these people. So I think he's coming at TV not from a standup perspective, but really from a character comedy background. Rad: Well Jackson, after impersonating all these other people, now Benito's creating this show that's about a character whose story is much like his own. So in a nutshell, what is Benny's story in this show? Jackson: I mean, "queer Never Have I Ever" is basically how I would describe it. It's the perennial story of somebody who grows up, [but] specifically for him in the '90s as someone who's in a somewhat more accepting society for queerness, for being gay — [it's] not necessarily literally illegal — but it's still not the best thing to find out you are, especially when you're a boy among friends you're not sure are going to accept you. And then you try and cover that by being as straight as possible. You make up a fake version of yourself. And then you get to university, you see gay-straight alliances, and you flail towards some sort of authenticity, some sort of self acceptance — the divide between either becoming your true self, or harkening to the thing that has gotten you all the accolades, all the acceptance, up to that point. I think it's a pretty universal story, a pretty well-learned and well-earned experience. There's a book called The Velvet Rage that is about how if you are a gay man and have grown up in a straight world, as all of us kind of have, you will have created this fake self, this way to hide from shame and covet validation. And when you finally get to the point where you are sort of making the baby steps towards giving up that fake version of yourself, you realize that your ability to support your own sense of self, to have your own sort of self-confidence is totally juvenile and not necessarily there. And all you need is external validation. And this show is kind of all about that, where he does not have any sort of self-confidence or ability to feel good about himself unless it's people telling him he's good at football, or he is great at hooking up with girls or he's really hot, and he needs that. But he also needs to be himself. It's a very recognizable stage of life for the young gay man, I would say.

Lana Del Rey shares a rare insight into her life in Louisiana as she goes for a drive before snapping bathroom selfie after tying knot with alligator guide Jeremy Dufrene

Lana Del Rey has shared a rare insight into her life in Louisiana after tying the knot with her husband Jeremy Dufrene. Back in September 2024, the songstress, 39, married the gator tour, 49, guide in a shock wedding — just one month after debuting their romance. And taking to Instagram on Sunday, Lana gave fans a rare look at what her life looks like now as she shared a clip and snap on her Story. In the video, Lana could be seen seemingly in the driver's seat of a car smiling as she sang along to Addison Rae's track Diet Pepsi as it played. Then in another post, Lana posed in a bathroom mirror for a selfie wearing a simple ribbed white t-shirt with lace lining and a bow as well as low-rise denim shorts. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Lana and Jeremy exchanged vows by the water in Des Allemandes, Louisiana, last year at the same bayou where he operates his popular swamp tours. Lana first shared a photo with Jeremy after taking one of his tours from Arthur's Airboat Tours in Des Allemands, Louisiana back in 2019. After their initial meeting, they reconnected earlier in 2024 before tying the knot in late September last year in what sources described as a 'whirlwind' romance. 'It's been kind of a whirlwind romance, but Lana's close friends hoped she would get married,' the source said. 'Jeremy is different from the men that Lana meets in the entertainment world. He's a great guy,' the source added. 'He's charming and charismatic in a Southern way, very much a gentleman and he treats Lana really well. She's an old soul,' the source continued. Last month Lana sparked concern she did not sign a prenup after she appeared to reveal a detail about her marriage. Devoted fans of the singer expressed surprise after she debuted a new song with lyrics about her whirlwind wedding during her Stagecoach performance. At the country music festival, she sang a new tune titled Stars Fell On Alabama, which fans have also referred to as Husband of Mine, dedicated to her swamp tour guide husband Jeremy. The lyrics led fans to believe that she did not sign a prenup when marrying the boat captain and alligator tour guide less than a year ago. Though the pair have not publicly disclosed whether they have a prenup, fans are convinced her reported $30 million fortune is at risk if they would ever divorce. During her same festival appearance, she also performed for the first time another new song titled 57.5, revealing in the lyrics that she once kissed the controversial country singer Morgan Wallen. Opening her performance, the crooner sang: 'Husband of mine / Don't let them put all this paper between us. 'What's yours is mine / What's mine is between you, me and Jesus / I've got nothing to lose except you and maybe my mind.' The revealing lyrics sparked worry among her fans, with one X, formerly Twitter, user sharing concern that a potential divorce could see Dufrene claim Lana's millions. 'Oh no, he's going to take her hard earned money,'; 'Concerned she didn't sign a prenup,'; 'I truly believe miss Lana Del Rey does everything for the plot because why is she admitting to the world she didn't make that man sign a prenup in a song,'; 'She literally just said she didn't make him sign a prenup,'; 'Does this mean there's no prenup?? she said what's mine is yours.'
