Gerik bus crash: Apad issues show-cause letter to bus operator

PETALING JAYA: Anthony Loke says that the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has issued a show-cause letter to the bus operator involved in the tragic bus crash in Gerik. "The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is undertaking safety inspections and audits on the bus and the company, in compliance with the Road Transport Act and the Land Public Transport Act. "Firm action will be taken once the investigation is completed," said the Transport Minister. He also extended his condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who tragically lost their lives in a bus crash in Gerik. He also vowed to implement changes to strengthen road safety policies in Malaysia. "I am deeply saddened and affected by this tragic accident. Each life lost is a significant loss not only to the families, but to the future of our country. "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," he said in a Facebook post on Monday (June 9). He also emphasised the government's commitment to enhancing road safety measures, particularly to address threats posed by irresponsible drivers and heavy vehicles not meeting safety standards. "We are committed to protecting road users. Among the policies being drafted is the mandatory implementation of speed limiters for heavy vehicles," he said, adding that the policy is currently under comprehensive review to prevent any manipulation upon enforcement. Loke also acknowledged the swift actions of the Higher Education Ministry and UPSI management in providing support to the bereaved families. "This incident serves as a stark reminder to all parties – the government, operators and society – that there can be no compromise on the safety of lives," he said. Earlier on Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed in the accident along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, and 27 other students, the bus driver and his assistant, as well as three passengers of another multi-purpose vehicle, were injured. The bus, which was carrying 42 students, overturned while the MPV, carrying four people, veered into a ditch. Preliminary investigations showed that the bus, driven by a substitute driver from another bus company, collided with the MPV before overturning. The bus is also believed to have been speeding, based on victims' accounts.

Gerik crash: Apad issues show-cause letter to bus operator

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has issued a show-cause letter to the bus operator involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Road Transport Department (RTD) is concurrently conducting a Safety Inspection and Audit (JISA) on the bus and the operating company, under the Road Transport Act and the Land Public Transport Act. "Stern action will be taken once investigations are completed. "The government will not stop in its efforts to strengthen road safety policies. "We are committed to protecting road users, especially from the threat of irresponsible drivers and heavy vehicles that do not meet the required safety standards," he said in a statement today. Loke said that among the policies being formulated is the mandatory installation of speed limiters on heavy vehicles. This policy, he said, is being reviewed comprehensively, including measures to prevent any manipulation once it is enforced. "I also acknowledge the swift action taken by the Higher Education Ministry and the UPSI management in assisting the victims' families. "This tragedy must serve as a reminder to all — the government, operators, and the community — that there can be no compromise when it comes to the safety of life," he said. Loke expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, said that he was deeply saddened and affected by the accident. "Every life lost is a great loss not only to their families but also to the future of our nation. "I extend my heartfelt condolences to all the families of the victims. "My prayers are with the victims and their families as they endure this incredibly difficult time," he said. Earlier this morning, 15 people were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding, Perak. The accident involved a UPSI student bus and a Perodua Alza. A total of 33 people were injured.

[UPDATED] RTD launches crackdown on rogue lorry operators [WATCH]

SHAH ALAM: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is cracking down on lorry owners who knowingly operate vehicles without valid road tax, insurance or mandatory inspections. The department has begun recommending the suspension of operating licences for such companies, with offending lorries to have their permits revoked and potentially face ownership forfeiture. RTD Enforcement Division senior director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said these measures were being taken under the provisions of the Land Public Transport Act 2010. "To date, we have seized 135 vehicles under Section 80 of the Land Public Transport Act, involving cases in Selangor and Pahang. Of these, seven lorries have already been forfeited," he told reporters today at the Elmina RTD Enforcement Station. Section 80 of the Land Public Transport Act grants the power to seize relevant vehicles for certain offences and obtain forfeiture orders on these vehicles. Kifli said between 2019 and April this year, 513 companies have been recommended to have either their operating licences or vehicle permits suspended under the same Act. "We also issued 28 warnings to these companies during this period. "I also want to explain that in a bid to take stricter action against lorry drivers and their company owners who obstruct RTD personnel from conducting their duties during traffic checks, we will also open investigation papers under Section 234 of the same Act. "Those who commit an offence under this Section can face a maximum fine of RM200,000 or a maximum two years' imprisonment or both upon conviction," he said. Kifli also said they have initiated 17 investigation papers over commercial vehicles, including lorries which have been involved in accidents due to negligence or technical issues. "Of these IPs opened, 11 are still under investigation, three are currently being prosecuted and one has successfully been convicted. "Another IP is being reviewed by the deputy public prosecutor's office, while the remaining IP, involving a case in Rompin where a lorry crashed into a home, is awaiting a chemistry report as the driver was allegedly on drugs at the time," he said. Kifli said that the decision to take tougher action against errant lorries using all available laws in place was made following a string of accidents involving heavy vehicles, including the accident at Teluk Intan on May 13 which claimed the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel. "We will not compromise on the safety of road users and will take action against those who intentionally break the law," he said.

No road tax, no mercy: RTD seizes lorries, strips permits

SHAH ALAM: The Road Transport Department (RTD) is taking a hardline stance against lorry owners who deliberately operate vehicles without valid road tax, insurance, or mandatory inspections. The department has begun recommending the suspension of operating licences for such companies, with offending lorries to be stripped of their permits and potentially subject to ownership forfeiture. RTD Enforcement Division senior director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said these measures were being taken under the provisions of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.
