Johor blacklists five developers over failure to build affordable homes
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Five developers have been blacklisted for failing to build affordable homes in Johor while 10 others are under scrutiny, says state executive councillor Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor. The housing and local government committee chairman said punitive action was taken against stubborn developers that failed to build Johor Affordable Housing Scheme (RMMJ) units in spite of discussions and warnings. He said the Johor Affordable Housing Policy 2023 strictly states that every housing project spanning 2.02ha (5 acres) and above must allocate 40% for RMMJ units. Projects covering 1.2ha to 2.02ha (3 acres to 5 acres) of land have to allocate 20% for RMMJ, he added. 'This policy is not a mere guideline but the main condition that must be complied with by every developer when presenting plans to agencies such as the local council. 'Project applications that fail to comply with the policy will not even be considered, let alone approved,' he told the state assembly at Kota Iskandar here on Friday (May 23). He also told the assembly that some developers used 'cunning tactics' by carving out projects into smaller parcels below 1.2ha to avoid allocating 40% of the area for affordable housing. Jafni said the Johor Housing Development Corporation and agencies such as the Land and Mines Office and local councils had taken action such as stopping new project applications by developers that failed to build affordable homes. Punitive action included placing a Registrar's Caveat on land owned by the developer in question and also its subsidiaries and related companies that share the same board members, he added. 'Take note that these developers were not blacklisted (all of a sudden); discussions were held and they promised to build affordable homes but seemed to forget their promises after leaving the meetings," he said.

Ismail Sabri to resume recording statement at MACC this Thursday
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will recall Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob this Thursday to resume recording his statement as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the upcoming session pertains specifically to the former prime minister's asset declaration submitted under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009. 'Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri is being recalled to continue providing his statement,' Azam said briefly after attending the 11th Certified Integrity Officer Convocation Ceremony 2025 held today. The Bera member of parliament is under investigation over alleged corruption and money laundering involving the acquisition and use of funds for the promotion and publicity of the 'Keluarga Malaysia' programme during his tenure from August 2021 to November 2022. The investigation is being conducted under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. On March 3, Azam was reported as stating that Ismail Sabri is a suspect in a corruption and money laundering case, following the discovery of approximately RM170 million in multiple currencies and 16 kilogrammes of gold bars during an MACC raid at a designated safe house. Additionally, MACC has reportedly frozen 13 bank accounts to facilitate the ongoing investigation. On the illegal encroachment of land in Raub, Pahang, Azam confirmed that MACC had opened an investigation on the matter in 2021 and will continue its investigation in light of recent developments. 'Our focus will be on two aspects: first, the element of corruption concerning how the illegal land encroachments occurred over a certain period, and second, issues of governance within the district office and the Land and Mines Office,' he said. On April 14, the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, took a firm stance that there should be no unlawful encroachment of land in the state and that appropriate action must be taken against those involved. Previously, an enforcement operation at durian orchards in Raub drew widespread attention, following claims by some growers expressing grievance over the destruction of their crops. However, the Pahang government has denied any violation of a court order with the felling of approximately 200 Musang King durian trees in Sungai Klau, Raub, on April 8.

Pahang urged to form panel to tackle land encroachment
KUANTAN: A state assemblyman has urged the Pahang government to form a special committee to examine and address the issue of land encroachment in the state. Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji (PH-Tras) said the committee could comprise various parties, including former officers of the Land and Mines Office, land experts from higher education institutions, police, lawyers and religious scholars. He said the committee should be given three months to submit a proposed action plan for implementation by the state government. 'A special committee should be formed to review this issue and propose fair and win-win solutions. Encroachment must be stopped, and encroached land must not be left unattended for too long, as this can lead to theft of harvestable crops for sale,' he said. He was speaking during the debate on the motion of thanks on the royal address by the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, in the Pahang State Legislative Assembly today. Earlier, the Sultan of Pahang decreed that the ongoing issue of land encroachment in the state must be resolved, noting that 14,494.9 hectares of state land have been encroached and illegally cultivated with oil palm, rubber, durian and other crops. In addition, His Royal Highness said that 5,997.09 hectares of Permanent Forest Reserves (HSK) have also been encroached under the guise of agriculture, which in reality is an open theft of state property. Shahril Azman Abd Halim (PN-Jengka) supported the state government's firm action in addressing the issue by taking encroachers to court instead of issuing compounds. Separately, Chan Chun Kuang (PH-Semambu) urged the state government to consider enacting specific legislation to protect the people of Pahang from online fraud. He said the state government must take a proactive role in safeguarding its citizens against digital threats. The sitting will resume tomorrow.
