'It's amazing': Laney baseball shuts out Corinth Holders to advance to state championship

Wilmington — Laney baseball is state championship bound for the first time in 15 years. The No. 3-seeded Bucs (25-5) left no doubt Saturday, May 22, shutting out No. 4 Corinth Holders 4-0 to win Game 3 of the NCHSAA 4A East regional championship. Advertisement Laney pitcher Jason Sproull didn't blink on the mound, tossing 10 strikeouts in the shutout victory that sends the Bucs to next week's 4A state title game against West champion T.C. Roberson. "To put it all together this year its honestly amazing," the junior said. "To get out here and finish it, to do what I do best, is great." LANEY BASEBALL Laney baseball sprints past Corinth Holders in Game 1 of regional championship series The Laney High School baseball team defeated Corinth Holders 4-0 to win the NCHSAA 4A East regional championship series on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Sproull was hot at the plate as well, logging two RBIs as Laney jumped to an early 3-0 lead. It was the Bucs' standout defense, led by Sproull's effort on the mound, that lifted the team to the definitive win. Advertisement "He's one of the best pitchers in the state," Laney coach Justin Bradley said of Sproull. "Just a dude that you can hand the ball to and just know that he's gonna go out there and compete his butt off." Ziermann continued his hot streak, going 3-for-3 as the Bucs tallied seven total hits. The Pirates (26-5) began the game with Brayden Driver on the mound. The junior threw nine strikeouts in five innings. Ace pitcher Briggs McKenzie started Game 2, delivering 11 strikeouts as the team rolled to a decisive 7-1 victory. But in the series' championship game, when it mattered most, Laney came to play. "To see it manifest and become real … I really don't have words for it," Bradley said of his team's journey this spring. "They played their hearts out." Advertisement Bradley is no stranger to state title games. The former Ashley and UNCW baseball standout helped the Screaming Eagles make their first state championship appearance in 2007. Laney last played for a state championship in 2010. The Bucs, who finished sixth in the conference that season, shocked the 4A bracket as they collected a state title trophy in a series sweep over East Forsyth. Laney faces T.C. Roberson in the best-of-three state championship series slated for May 30-31. The regional champs will play in Burlington or Holly Springs. "Just play Laney baseball," Sproull said of the Bucs' mentality going into the state championship matchup. "That's what we've been doing all year, and we're not going to change at all." CHKD celebrates 50 years of mobile intensive care units, unveils new transport vehicle

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters on Tuesday celebrated their Mobile Intensive Care Unit being in service for 50 years. 'Each year, our mobile intensive care unit handles about 1,500 calls,' said a CHKD representative. 'Over the 50 years, that something like 50,000 patients.' To mark the 50th anniversary, CHKD unveiled its newest MICU transport vehicle, decorated with colorful artwork provided by Virginia Beach-based artist Troy Summerell, also known as OnieTonie. CHKD's transport vehicles are the only ones in the area permitted to provide neonatal transports, such as the lifesaving ride Laney Lion received when she was just 7-days old. 'Long story short, 911 was called, and the ambulatory unit was called,' said her mom, Stephanie Lion. 'An EMT who is a veteran of 34 years made the call to intubate Laney at an urgent care to do an IO procedure.' She said after speaking with people she knows, she realizing looking back what a lifesaving move it was. 'I have a friend that's been an ER doctor for 30 years saying 'I know what that is in theory, but I've never done one, or I've never intubated an infant,'' she said, recalling what they told her. The MICU arrived at the CHKD Urgent Care in Virginia Beach and rushed Laney to the Norfolk campus. She credits the hard working ambulatory staff for keeping her alive until they got Laney to the hospital. Once they got to CHKD, Stephanie Lion learned her daughter would need an open heart surgery at just two weeks old for congenital heart defects. Nine years later, she's a spunky and fashionable girl with her whole life ahead of her because of a team of heroes. 'The people that I say saved Laney's life are the people that were on that ambulatory unit,' Stephanie Lion said. 'So I just can't thank you enough. It was a miracle of a night. And this is a miracle of the place. And, I couldn't be more grateful.' According to CHKD, two teams are in place 24/7 to transport acute and non-acute pediatric patients. Each team consists of a specially trained intensive care registered nurse, paramedic and respiratory therapist, all qualified in to care for newborns to teenagers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Have a flight and still need a Real ID? Nevada DMV to accept walk-ins

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada DMV announced Friday that, starting May 5, it will accept walk-ins for residents who have upcoming flights and still need a Real ID. According to a release from the Department of Motor Vehicles, customers with flight arrangements in the following 45 days can walk in Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Reno, Carson City, Sahara, Flamingo, Decatur, and Henderson offices. Customers who walk in will be required to prove that they have an upcoming commercial flight. The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, and ever since, the DMV has issued compliant licenses and ID cards. Real IDs are easily identifiable with a star emblem in the upper right-hand corner. The deadline has been extended several times since 2005, but the new deadline, May 7, is 'the real deal,' the DMV said. It will not be extended again. 'There are many misconceptions about who needs a Real ID, and customers who assumed the date would move again were not worried about the previous deadlines,' DMV Director Tonya Laney said. 'Well, we are now seeing panic creep in amongst Nevadans who are trying to get their Real IDs. This is a problem for the rest of the customers in the state who already had appointments to get their regular DMV business done.' To offset the demand, the DMV initially allowed walk-ins on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. starting April 22. With appointments and walk-ins combined, the DMV saw 46,770 customers who needed a Real ID in April alone. 'If you do not have a need to board a commercial aircraft, enter a secure military facility or nuclear power plant, please do not panic!' said Laney. 'Your existing driver license, ID card or instruction permit is still a valid document for all other purposes.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
