FILE PHOTO: A boy with dengue fever rests in bed at a hospital in Vientiane, Laos, July 10, 2013. - Xinhua VIENTIANE: The Lao Ministry of Health remains committed to collaborating with its development partners to strengthen the national health system and build greater resilience to the impacts of climate change. The Strengthening Climate Resilience of Laos' Health System project, funded by the Green Climate Fund, was officially launched recently to enhance climate change adaptation and improve the sustainability of health systems in seven provinces across Laos, Lao News Agency reported on Saturday (June 7). Key projects include strengthening health information systems by incorporating climate change data, upgrading health facilities in target areas to manage climate-related diseases better, and equipping communities to respond effectively to early warning systems, helping reduce risks and ensure timely treatment. Children in the target provinces are especially vulnerable to climate-related health risks, including dengue fever, diarrhea, and malnutrition, driven by extreme weather events that disrupt agriculture, habitats, water supplies, and sanitation systems. The Lao Ministry of Health will continue working closely with development partners to strengthen the country's health system and enhance its resilience to the impacts of climate change. Key efforts include training health workers to address climate-related health risks, upgrading health infrastructure to withstand climate impacts, and raising community awareness to improve preparedness and response. - Xinhua

Laos continues efforts to prevent dengue spread
File photo shows a doctor treating a patient suffering from dengue fever at a hospital in Vientiane, Laos, July 10, 2013. -Xinhua VIENTIANE: Lao authorities are urging all sectors and the public to remain vigilant in preventing the spread of dengue, particularly during the rainy season, when flooding creates ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and raises the risk of infection. The number of dengue fever cases in Laos has reached 1,370, with no deaths reported so far this year, according to a report issued by the Lao Ministry of Health on Wednesday (June 4). The highest number of cases occurred in Lao capital Vientiane, where 456 cases were reported, followed by Luang Namtha province with 159 cases, and Sekong province with 153 cases. The health ministry also urged people to remain vigilant and help control the spread of the mosquito-borne viral disease. Health authorities advise five simple measures as the most effective methods of dengue control which are being practiced by households. These measures consist of closing and sealing all unused containers, flushing out all water vessels, placing small guppy fish in water jars as they eat mosquito larvae, cleaning areas around homes, and remembering to do these four tasks each week. - Xinhua
