EXCLUSIVE Out of this world SNL star who shared a controversial passionate kiss with an accused murderer on screen was spotted in rare LA outing... who is it?
She found fame as the eccentric daughter of an extraterrestrial family on late-night TV. As one of the original cast members of an iconic show, she made her mark playing other characters too – such as a proto-Valley girl and the ditzy co-host of a public-access TV show. The comedy star also made a splash in a skit where she shared a passionate kiss with NFL star turned accused murderer OJ Simpson. She later called him a 'good kisser'. Though she's stepped back from the B-list films that helped pay the bills throughout the 80s, she remains involved in showbiz – going so far as to post fiery messages online aimed at a wildly-acclaimed TV show that won an Emmy she thought should have gone to her actress daughter. Now, she tends to keep a low profile, choosing to live away from the spotlight. But she was recently spotted on a rare outing in Los Angeles where she has lived for most of her life. Can you guess who she is? It's Laraine Newman! The 73-year-old comedian was spotted walking her little black poodle down her residential block in Los Angeles last week. Despite being a popular member of Saturday Night Live's original cast, Newman has said previously that she didn't enjoy her time on the show or living in New York City – developing eating disorders and a heroin addiction. But exclusive photos show Laraine is thriving in her home city as she strolled her native blocks with a serene look on her face. Newman wore a bright orange long-sleeve from the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, black sweatpants and black shoes. Her brown hair was in its usual straight style, but the comedian had graying roots. The former SNL comedian has left the on-camera life and transitioned to become a writer and contributing editor for the 'food, politics and love' online magazine, One For The Table. She also has freelanced for the Huffington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Believer and McSweeney's. The beginning for Newman was a homerun, starring as an original cast member on SNL from 1975 to 1980. Her most prominent skit characters were Connie Conehead, proto-Valley girl Sherry and Christie Christina, the co-host of a public access TV show hosted by Dan Aykroyd's persona E. Buzz Miller. One of her most memorable appearances was in 1978 with guest host O.J. Simpson – then still a football hero rather than a reviled accused murderer. In a February interview with Andy Cohen, she called Simpson 'a good host and a good kisser.' The comment referenced a sketch parodying the 1975 film Mandingo when she shared a passionate on-screen kiss with Simpson. Despite her success, Newman struggled with her mental health throughout her time on the show. The comment referenced a sketch the couple appeared in parodying the 1975 movie Mandingo In her memoir May You Live in Interesting Times, Laraine described her struggle with drug addiction and how difficult it was to keep up with SNL's endless competition for screen time between cast members. Newman also revealed in her memoir that she had previously dated Aykroyd as well as fellow cast member Phil Hartman, who was shot and killed by his estranged wife Brynn in his Los Angeles home in 1998. After leaving SNL and New York behind, Laraine began appearing in comedy and sci-fi movies such as Wholly Moses, Stardust Memories and Invaders from Mars. Then, she dipped her toes in voice acting with animated shows including Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Jimmy Neutron, before hitting the big leagues with box office bonanzas WALL-E, Up!, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. Although Newman has shifted over to an entirely new path with writing, she remains involved in her daughter Hannah Einbinder's acting career. Einbinder, 29, shot to fame for her portrayal of Ava Daniels in the hit TV series Hacks and even bagged herself a Critics' Choice Award and was Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated. Newman married Chad Einbinder, 62, in 1991. The couple had two children together, Spike and Hacks actress Hannah, before calling it quits in 2015 Her memoir May You Live in Interesting Times divulged her romances with SNL cast members Dan Aykroyd and Phil Hartman Hannah is her second child with former husband Chad couple were married in 1991, but after nearly 25 years of marriage, called it quits in 2015. Chad has starred in several films and TV series including Doctor Dolittle, The Time Traveller's Wife and Tangled. Their experience in Hollywood made them weary about Hannah's desire to pursue her showbiz dreams. Hannah told Town & Country that her parents originally told her not to go into comedy or acting as they believed it doesn't actually matter if you're funny or not. But despite their initial hesitancy, Newman didn't hesitate to post a disparaging message for the show The Bear after Hannah lost out at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards last September. 'F**. THE. BEAR,' she posted along with numerous exclamation points on X, in reaction to Liza Colon-Zayas winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series as Hannah was nominated for the same category for Hacks. Newman posted an angry message after her daughter was snubbed at Emmys last year: 'I think the Bear is a great show but IMHO it's not a comedy- not even a dark comedy' She then posted: 'I think the Bear is a great show but IMHO it's not a comedy – not even a dark comedy.' Someone else asked if the original post was necessary and Laraine responded: 'I know. I took it down. Not my best moment.' Newman earlier shared her frustration over The Bear being in the same comedy category as Hacks. 'Every time I think about The Bear being in the comedy category for the Emmys, I can feel an ulcer developing,' she posted. While Hannah lost out in her acting category, Hacks did win the final award of the event - Outstanding Comedy Series.

Detroit's NBC affiliate WDIV cuts short 'SNL' 50th anniversary show, blames technical issue
History repeated itself, sort of, on Saturday night, for Detroit's WDIV-TV and "Saturday Night Live." The Motor City's NBC affiliate, which didn't broadcast the first episode of the landmark comedy sketch show in 1975 (or the following two seasons), was airing the big "Saturday Night Live" 50th anniversary special when it cut away from the live show after a commercial break at around 11:15 p.m. The only problem was the special wasn't over. Detroit area viewers tuned in to Local 4 didn't get to see the concluding musical performance by Paul McCartney, who sang the epic medley of "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight" and "The End" from the Beatles' 1969 "Abbey Road" album. They also missed the onstage goodbye where Martin Short delivered the remarks as a horde of past cast members crowded the stage — and original cast members including Laraine Newman and Jane Curtain held up a photo of metro Detroit's own Gilda Radner, one of the greats from the 1975 cast. While all of that was happening, Local 4 was delivering its delayed 11 p.m. newscast. WDIV (Channel 4) delivered an on-air apology citing technical difficulties before the newscast ended citing technical difficulties and also posted one on X (former Twitter). It said, "A note to followers: We sincerely apologize for the technical issue that resulted in cutting off the the end of #SNL 50 tonight. You can watch the full episode on Peacock." WDIV general manager Bob Ellis told the Free Press via email on Monday morning that that an explanation of what happened would be posted on the station's ClickOnDetroit website. Laura Varon Brown, executive director and CEO of Gilda's Club of Metro Detroit, told the Free Press via email that Radner would have been able to find the humor in the abrupt cutoff. "Gilda may have appreciated the irony of the ill-timed cutoff when Laraine Newman and Jane Curtin held up photo when Sir Paul McCartney was beautifully ending the show. I'm certain she'd have a joke about that," said Brown, also a former editor at the Free Press. Brown said she was "simply blown away by" the "SNL" special. "I have such vivid memories of Gilda Radner when SNL began. Her gift of humor and joy, just so inspiring. And now, to carry on her vision of care and understanding for families facing cancer, is a true privilege." Radner died in 1989 of ovarian cancer. Gilda's Club, which honors her legacy, provides a community of support to those whose lives are affected by cancer. The "SNL50" anniversary special was a star-studded night that featured musical performances by McCartney, Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon, Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard and Lil Wayne, numerous former cast members and hosts and new takes on classic skits like Debbie Downer, "Black Jeopardy" and Weekend Update. Other highlights include Carpenter appearing later, along with Pedro Pascal and Bad Buddy, in a third installment of the recurring "Domingo" sketch and Adam Sandler's sweet tribute to Lorne Michaels, which got a standing ovation. This isn't the first footnote in Detroit TV's history with "SNL." WDIV declined to air the show when it first premiere on Oct. 11, 1975. With the station's permission, the then-UHF station Channel 50 at some point picked up the first two seasons of "SNL." On that historic date of Oct. 11, 1975, Channel 4 aired the 1959 rom-com "Pillow Talk" with Doris Day and Rock Hudson in what became known as the "SNL" time slot. Laraine Newman Dishes on Kissing O.J. Simpson During His Saturday Night Live Hosting Gig
Laraine Newman once locked lips with O.J. Simpson, and it was quite pleasant. During a Feb. 12 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Saturday Night Live alum, 72, was joined by her fellow sketch show veterans, Cheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer, Cecily Strong and Rachel Dratch and played a game of 'Work the Polls' with host Andy Cohen. When asked if athletes made "good" hosts on the iconic NBC show, the group agreed that they were great participants before Cohen asked if any of the comedians were on SNL when Simpson hosted. He Texts His Former SNL Castmate, Says Laraine Newman (Exclusive) After timidly raising her hand and biting her nail, Newman revealed that Simpson was not only a "good" host but also a "good kisser." 'We did a parody of a movie that is so horrifyingly objectionable called, Mandingo,' she explained, before Cohen laughed and added that the 1975 film about a plantation owner's affair with a slave, "wouldn't play today!" In February 1978, the disgraced football player made his hosting debut in season 3 of Saturday Night Live with Ashford & Simpson.
