Doña Ana County Fire Rescue extinguish residential fire in Organ

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Doña Ana County Fire Rescue (DAFR), with the help of the Las Cruces Fire Department, extinguished a residential structure fire Sunday morning, June 8, in Organ, New Mexico. According to DAFR, the call came in at 9:30 a.m. on June 8, along the 6800 block of Aurora Place in Organ, roughly 13 miles west of Las Cruces. When fire crews arrived, an RV was 'fully engulfed in flames that spread to a nearby mobile unit being used as a fixed residence,' Doña Ana County Fire said. With the assistance of Las Cruces Fire, crews were able to extinguish the fire, DAFR said. Doña Ana County Fire Rescue said no injuries were reported. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Two people charged with murder in Young Park shooting

On Saturday evening, Las Cruces Police arrested two suspects for their involvement in Friday's mass shooting at Young Park in Las Cruces. Tomas Rivas, 20, and a 17-year-old boy are both charged with three open counts of murder. Additional charges are pending, according to a LCPD news release as the investigation remains ongoing. The name of the boy, who is considered a juvenile, was not released to the media. Rivas will be booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he will initially be held without bond. The juvenile will be remanded to the juvenile detention facility. More: Las Cruces Young Park shooting result of altercation at unsanctioned car show, police say In a Saturday news conference, LCPD Chief Jeremy Story said the first calls for gun shots came in at 10:10 p.m., on March 21, 2025, and that gun fire escalated to injure several people caught in crossfire before LCPD and Las Cruces Fire arrived on scene. There was "ill will" between two groups of individuals prior to the event that escalated, according to Story. There were three male victims who were killed in the shooting and at least 15 additional victims who suffered injuries. Police did not release the name of the injured victims, whose ages range from 16-36. Of the 15 victims, nine are male and six are female. Police did not provide an update on the current medical conditions of the surviving victims. The deceased victims have been identified as Andrew Madrid, 16; Jason Gomez, 18; and Dominick Estrada, 19. Madrid and Gomez died on the scene while Estrada was transported to Mountain View Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police. Madrid was a sophomore on the Centennial High School baseball team, according to a Facebook post by the team's booster club on Saturday. Las Cruces names new fire chief

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Fire Department (LCFD) has a new fire chief, according to the City of Las Cruces on Wednesday, March 19. Michael Daniels, a 19-year veteran with Las Cruces Fire, will take command on Monday, March 24. Daniels succeeds Jason Smith, who retired back in January after 22 years of service. Las Cruces Fire chief to retire after 22 years of service According to the City of Las Cruces, Deputy Chief Sean Heck has been serving as interim fire chief since Feb. 1. 'I selected Michael Daniels as our next Fire Chief after a very competitive selection process with strong external and internal candidates,' City Manager Ikani Taumoepeau said. 'It's a testament to the Las Cruces Fire Department and the City of Las Cruces that we have such well-trained and highly qualified personnel who are capable of stepping in and fulfilling the duties of this vital position. 'I have every bit of confidence that Michael will do a wonderful job leading the Las Cruces Fire Department and engaging with our community for years to come.' Daniels began his career with the fire department in July 2006 after serving in the U.S. Navy, according to the City. According to the City, he has previously served as a driver/operator, interim training officer, lieutenant/paramedic and battalion chief before earning the rank of deputy chief. Currently, Daniels is the president of the Southwestern Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and is one of the governor's appointees on the New Mexico Fire Protection Grant Council, according to the City. In addition, Daniels has earned several awards and commendations throughout the years, including Firefighter of the Year in 2011 by the Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce and received a National Fire Academy Outstanding Research Award in 2020 for the highest-rated community risk reduction research paper he published in 2019 through the Executive Fire Officer Program, the City said. Daniels earned his bachelor's degree in individual studies in 2012 from New Mexico State University.
