Man dies in tiger attack, 9th killing in Uttarakhand this year
Dehradun: A 34-year-old man was mauled to death by a tiger while collecting leaves used to make eco-friendly utensils in the forests of Rishikesh range in Lal Tappar area of Dehradun district on Friday. This marks the ninth human death from tiger attacks in the state this year. Officials said a male tiger, recently relocated from Corbett to Rajaji Tiger Reserve, had been exploring new territory and moving between Tapovan and Rajaji over the past 20 days but has since returned to the reserve. The area is also home to a tigress, and it is yet to be determined which animal was responsible for the attack, officials added. The victim, identified as Raju (only first name available), had entered the forest with his brother around 9.30am when the tiger attacked them. His brother, Sanju, ran for help, but by the time others arrived, Raju had died. Officials noted that the body was intact, suggesting it was an accidental encounter rather than a predatory attack. "An ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh has been given to the family, and the remaining compensation to follow upon completion of formalities," said Dehradun DFO Neeraj Sharma. The recent tiger movement from Motichur to Rishikesh and Barkot forest ranges underscores the ecological connectivity of the Kansrao-Motichur-Barkot wildlife corridor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience three trade fairs with just one ticket Undo automatica 2025 Undo Laser World of Photonics Undo World of Quantum Undo Visit automatica: June 24-27, Munich Undo However, forest officials remain concerned about rising human activity fragmenting wildlife habitats and depleting resources. "There is an overwhelming presence of human habitation across Chhiddarwala, Nepali Farm, and Lal Tappar. The forest patch near Rishikesh and Barkot is narrow, only about 8 to 9 km wide, which is insufficient and not very promising for tiger habitation. The tiger is still exploring areas and does not yet have a fixed territory," said a senior IFS officer on condition of anonymity. Since 2020, under the translocation project, five tigers have been moved from Corbett and the Kumaon region to Rajaji. This effort aims to re-establish the tiger population in western Rajaji, extending into the westernmost parts of the Shivaliks, reaching Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Efforts are underway to identify the animal responsible and inform the public, said Sharma. "We are spreading awareness among locals and tourists, asking them not to venture into the forests due to the presence of tigers, leopards, elephants and other wildlife. We have also requested higher authorities for permission to either trap or tranquilise the animal responsible. Joint patrolling teams from Dehradun and Rajaji are on constant alert, focusing on the fringe areas," he said.

Pawar snubs Raut over call to boycott all-party delegation on Op Sindoor
Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Monday said that party politics should be set aside when it comes to international issues. He was reacting to Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut 's statement that INDIA bloc should have boycotted all-party delegations on Operation Sindoor . Pawar's party is a member of the MVA alliance with Raut's Sena faction in the state. The veteran politician was talking to reporters in his hometown of Baramati where he supported the idea of sending all-party delegations to different countries to explain India's stand for undertaking Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Pawar said, "When PV Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister, he sent a delegation to the UN, which was led by the then opposition leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee. I was among the delegates. The same thing is happening today. When it comes to international issues, we should rise above party politics." Raut had criticised the central govt over the formation of all-party delegations for Operation Sindoor. He claimed that the central govt did not consult any party before selecting the members. He also accused the central govt of sending the all-party delegation to other countries to cover up its failure to avert the terror attack and said INDIA bloc members should have boycotted the delegation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience three trade fairs with just one ticket Undo automatica 2025 Undo Laser World of Photonics Undo World of Quantum Undo Visit automatica: June 24-27, Munich Undo Pawar said, "I cannot dictate my opinion to him (Raut). He has the right to express his opinion, but I saw the name of his party member in the delegation. My stand is clear that we should set aside local politics while discussing international issues." On Sunday, Pawar met a group of farmers from Purandar tehsil of Pune district who are opposing the proposed international airport. He said, "The central govt has finalised the Purandar site for the international airport for Pune. However, there is farmland which was brought under an irrigation scheme when I was chief minister. Now, farmers are growing sugar cane on that land. As agricultural land will have to be acquired for the airport project, farmers are uncertain about giving up their land." He added that since the issue pertains to the central and state govt, his efforts are to initiate a meeting with the chief minister to discuss possible options. "Local MP Supriya Sule, other important local members, and farmers will also participate in the meeting to look for a solution," Pawar said.

CM Stalin urges Centre to act after attack on Tamil Nadu fishers
Trichy: Following the alleged assault and robbery of 23 Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan assailants on May 2, chief minister M K Stalin has written to Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar, urging strong diplomatic intervention to prevent such incidents and to secure the release of impounded Indian fishing boats. The fishermen, hailing from villages including Seruthur, Akkaraipettai, Arukatuthurai, and Vellapallam in Nagapattinam district, were attacked while fishing southeast of Kodiyakarai in five fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) motorised boats. Armed gangs reportedly from Sri Lanka assaulted the fishers and looted their nets, catch, boat engines, and other equipment. In his letter, Stalin requested the Centre to engage with Sri Lankan authorities to stop such cross-border attacks and ensure the safety of Indian fishermen . He also objected to Sri Lanka's reported plan to dismantle and submerge 34 seized mechanised boats—confiscated in 2022 and 2023—as artificial reef ecosystems, calling it a threat to the livelihood of Tamil Nadu fishers. The chief minister noted that as of May 5, Sri Lanka holds around 229 mechanised boats belonging to Tamil Nadu fishers. Although 12 have been cleared for release by Sri Lankan courts, they have yet to be repatriated. Stalin reiterated his earlier proposal to send 14 salvage boats and 101 fishermen to recover the vessels. He emphasised the need to uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of Indian fishers while respecting maritime boundaries.

Aided colleges risk losing govt aid over seeking deemed univ status
T'puram: At least two aided colleges in Kerala have initiated steps to earn deemed university status against the wishes and policies of the state govt. Higher education minister R Bindu said no aided college can acquire deemed university status without risking the financial assistance they get from the govt. According to reports, Mar Ivanios College in Thiruvananthapuram, and Rajagiri School of Social Sciences in Kalamassery have approached University Grants Commission (UGC) for deemed status and sources said UGC has started its due process on their applications. Earlier, the colleges failed to obtain a no-objection certificate from the govt to change their status into deemed universities. Govt did not respond to their requests for assurance regarding the salary paid by the govt for staff in aided colleges. "Govt has not given permission to any aided college to approach UGC for deemed university status. No college management should think they can continue to enjoy govt-aided status and continue to receive substantial funding from govt if they start functioning as deemed universities. Govt will stop funding such institutions," said Bindu. The Syam B Menon committee, appointed by the govt to bring reforms in higher education sector, recommended the govt against promoting more deemed universities. Instead, it wanted govt to promote private universities. It also recommended govt to consider deemed university proposals with certain conditions. Private managements were reportedly exploring this clause in the report to further their interest. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience three trade fairs with just one ticket Undo automatica 2025 Undo Laser World of Photonics Undo World of Quantum Undo Visit automatica: June 24-27, Munich Undo If aided colleges, which already enjoy autonomous status, become deemed universities, they will be free to fix fees and decide on student admissions. Instead of state law, UGC regulations (2023) would be applicable to them. State govt pays the staff salaries at aided colleges as per the direct payment agreement signed between govt and managements in 1972.
