Lorde Previews New Single in NYC After Police Axe ‘Unscheduled' Pop-Up Appearance
Lorde has given fans in New York City a preview of her new single after plans for an in-person event fell by the wayside thanks to local law enforcement. The New Zealand singer is reportedly preparing to launch new single 'What Was That' on Friday (April 25), with the track serving as her first piece of solo music since 2021. The first taste of her upcoming fourth album, Lorde initially teased the single with her first-ever post on TikTok, sharing a video of herself walking through Washington Square Park in New York City while listening to the dreamy synth-pop track. As a result, fans flooded to Washington Square Park to hopefully catch a glimpse of the musician, though the gathered masses were soon urged to leave by local law enforcement. Lorde took to her Instagram Stories soon after to address those who had turned out for the last-minute affair. 'Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !!!' she wrote. 'But they're telling me you gotta disperse … I'm so sorry.' According to Rolling Stone, a spokesperson for New York City's DCPI stated that officers had been alerted to an 'unscheduled event' within the park, adding that a 'sound and parks permit' is required to hold a concert event in a NYC park. 'This individual did not possess either,' the statement added. 'Organizers of the event were informed they could not perform and they left the location.' Fans who remained within Washington Square Park were rewarded for their patience, however, with the singer later showing up to play her new single. Though Lorde didn't perform the track live, she danced along to 'What Was That' while it was being played by producer Dev Hynes of Blood Orange fame. Lorde's appearance in New York City comes just over a week after she made a surprise appearance during Charli XCX's Coachella set to guest on a performance of 'Girl, So Confusing.' With her new single set to arrive soon, Lorde's new era is fast-approaching, telling fans in her recent voice note that 'everything is about to change.' She added, 'These are the last moments where it's just us, which is crazy. But so right. I'm so ready.' 'In line with our protocols, the individuals were immediately attended to by the venue's medical and security staff, and were taken to a hospital where they received care and were discharged during the early hours of the morning accompanied by their families,' Ocesa explained in a statement to Billboard Español. In the same statement, the Mexican promoter reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of attendees, staff, and artists. In a post on X Thursday, Quevedo spoke about the incident that occurred during his show. 'Good morning from CDMX. Last night, a bleacher collapsed during the show, and three people had to receive medical attention,' wrote the 'Quédate' singer. 'We've learned that they've been discharged without serious injuries, and I wanted to send them encouragement and strength for a speedy recovery.' The accident happened nearly three weeks after the tragedy at the AXE Ceremonia festival, where two photojournalists lost their lives when a scissor lift, used to place a decorative figure, fell on them due to strong wind gusts. The incident is currently being investigated by Mexico City's Attorney General's Office. Quevedo kicked off the Latin American leg of his Buenas Noches tour on Wednesday in Mexico City, marking his first visit to the region in two years. The tour will also stop in Guadalajara and Monterrey on Friday and Sunday (April 25 and 27). With 14 dates, this is the 'Gran Vía' singer's most ambitious tour in Latin America to date. Demi Lovato Pokes Fun at Viral ‘Poot' Meme 10 Years Later: ‘I'm Never Letting Her Out'
It's been a full decade since Poot Lovato had her last taste of freedom — and according to Demi Lovato, the hilarious, fictitious alter ego is staying locked up for many decades more. In a TikTok video posted Monday (April 21), the singer-songwriter poked fun at the mega-viral meme from 2015 by lip-synching to an audio snippet with the prompt, 'When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…' More from Billboard Demi Lovato to Headline Caron Treatment Centers' 31st Annual New York Gala Nikki Glaser Had a Golden Globes Joke About Benny Blanco She Thought Might Be Too Mean - So She Asked Him Beéle Leads 2025 Heat Latin Music Awards Nominations: Complete List 'What an offer, let me sleep on it though,' Lovato mouths along sarcastically, staring pointedly at the camera. The 'Sorry Not Sorry' musician added in their caption, 'And I'm never letting her out.' The video marks one of several times Lovato has acknowledged Poot over the years, with the character first emerging from an unflattering edited photo of the star walking the 2014 Royal Variety Performance red carpet. The following year, a Tumblr user shared the manufactured snap and identified the altered face in it as 'Demi's twin sister.' 'She was locked in a basement her whole life,' they added at the time. 'This picture was taken the first time she went outside. Her name is Poot.' The user's claim about the photo was, of course, as absurd as it was false — but that's exactly why it spread like wildfire online in 2015 as more and more people piled onto the joke. Lovato only fueled the flames when she tweeted at the time, 'Cool to see a s–tty angle turn into a meme that circulates the Internet to people's amusement,' but the vocalist has since embraced the humor of Poot. In 2018, for instance, the Camp Rock alum joked on X, 'Poot is locked up … She's allergic to sunlight,' and in 2023, Lovato celebrated their 31st birthday with a batch of cupcakes decorated with edible photos of Poot.
