LDS Church Apostle Jeffrey Holland dedicates Toronto Ontario Temple

TORONTO () — President Jeffrey R. Holland, the acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, rededicated the of the Sunday afternoon. 'Today we are happy to break the lock on the Toronto Ontario Temple and its grounds, to have what we pray will be a continuous flow of faithful recommend holders in this renewed opportunity now open to us,' Holland said to those assembled both in person and across several different digital means. What are Latter-day Saint Temples? Holland told members in attendance that they should take the time to rededicate themselves to the promises of Christlike living. For many Latter-day Saints in Ontario, having President Holland there was what some called 'a beautiful moment.' Following a recent health scare, Holland commented that he is pleased with the improvement of his health. 'I felt great. I am so happy with some improvement in my health, or at least in my movement and the conditions of my health,' President Holland told the Church Sunday. 'I was very, very happy about that and happy to be back in Toronto.' Originally announced in 1984 and finished in 1990, the Toronto Ontario Temple was the second to be built in Canada and the first on the east side of the country. It is currently one of 11 Temples announced, under construction, or in operation in the country. Odette Yu has served in the Toronto temple for over a decade and told the Church that this was 'everything and more than I expected.' 'It was my first time being in the dedicatory session. It was everything and more than I expected. The temple felt different. We've been here during construction. We've been here for the open house. But it was different when the dedication took place. We could feel there was a difference in the temple,' she said. Her husband, Steven said this was probably their most powerful experience in the temple. 'We can hardly wait to serve the Lord here in His holy house,' he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. What are Latter-day Saint temple garments?

SALT LAKE CITY — Over the years, many different religions have worn some sort of religious garment (i.e. a Yakama, the nun's habit, the priest's cassock, etc.) and the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is no different. Many people, both members and non-members alike, have talked about what Latter-day Saints wear under their clothes. The Church has also updated those garments to cater to church members worldwide. We're talking about the garments of the Holy Priesthood, or the temple garment. What are Latter-day Saint Temples? These garments are not the only sacred religious garments to Latter-day Saints, there are also the robes of the holy priesthood, which are only worn in Latter-day Saint Temples. More on those in a minute. The LDS Church says that the undergarments worn by members of the church have deeply rooted history and symbolism in scripture. 'Biblical scripture contains many references to the wearing of special garments. In the Old Testament the Israelites are specifically instructed to turn their garments into personal reminders of their covenants with God,' the church says online quoting scripture from the book of Numbers 15:37-41. For many Latter-day Saints, these garments, have a deep significance for members of the LDS Church. on these garments says the garments are for endowed members of the church 'who have made sacred promises of fidelity to God's commandments and the gospel of Jesus Christ.' These garments are worn daily. 'To Church members, the modest temple garment, worn under normal clothing, along with the symbolic vestments worn during temple worship, represent the sacred and personal aspect of their relationship with God and their commitment to live good, honorable lives,' the article says. The church also addresses some of the jokes made about these garments that say the undergarments are 'magical.' 'Some people incorrectly refer to temple garments as magical or 'magic underwear.' These words are not only inaccurate but also offensive to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There is nothing magical or mystical about temple garments, and Church members ask for the same degree of respect and sensitivity that would be afforded to any other faith by people of goodwill,' the Church says. There are also 'the robes of the holy priesthood' that were mentioned earlier, these garments are not usually seen because these garments are used in Latter-day Saint Temple ceremonies, primarily for the endowment ceremony, which is when members make a covenant to uphold certain laws that God has given Latter-day Saints. Members receive the endowment in two parts. 'In the first part, you will privately and individually receive what are called the initiatory ordinances. These ordinances include special blessings regarding your divine heritage and potential. As part of these ordinances, you will also be authorized to wear the sacred temple garment and covenant to wear it throughout your life,' 'In the second part, you will receive the rest of your endowment in a group setting. This takes place in an instruction room with others who are attending the temple. Some of the endowment is presented through video and some by temple workers. During the ordinance, events that are part of the plan of salvation are presented. They include the Creation of the world, the Fall of Adam and Eve, the Atonement of Jesus Christ, the Apostasy, and the Restoration. You will also learn more about the way all people can return to the presence of the Lord,' the article says. Once endowed, members of the church can continue to go through the Temple and endow family members who have passed on and give them the chance to accept the offerings. For Latter-day Saints, these are just a few of the ways members of the Church draw closer to God. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
