Bucs Star Defender Reveals Hardest Offensive Coaches to Game Plan Against
Bucs Star Defender Reveals Hardest Offensive Coaches to Game Plan Against originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are entering 2025 with the fourth offensive coordinator in as many seasons. Advertisement It's not because they're bad, quite the opposite. It's because two of the three previous coaches were hired as head coaches after just one season in Tampa Bay. After the 2023 season, Dave Canales was hired by the Carolina Panthers as their head coach. Liam Coen took over and after one season with the Bucs, he was hired this offseason to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even with the success the team has had recently - on a run of four straight division titles and five playoff appearances in a row - the team gets very little national attention or respect. In an interview with ESPN's Mina Kimes, Bucs star linebacker Lavonte David said that fact baffles him. Advertisement "I don't know why. We're a humble organization," he said. "We've got a lot of great players. It's good, though, we like having that underdog mentality. We have a bunch of underdogs. A lot of guys with a tremendous amount of talent and a lot of heart that battle week in and week out for each other." David then named both Canales and Coen among the hardest offensive coaches to game plan against. "Liam Coen, going against him. Dave Canales." Lavonte stated. "Sean McVay obviously. That whole tree. Shanahan, you know all those guys." David elaborated about what makes guys like Canales and Coen tough to game plan against. Advertisement "Having guys move in every place, so you've got to be able to get lined up when you're in a certain defense so you don't get outleveraged. You don't want to get outflanked when going against those guys, because they can hurt you big time." Analyst Details One Key Need For Buccaneers on Defense
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers knew that if they wanted to be considered as true Super Bowl contenders, the team would need to make drastic changes to their defense this offseason. Despite winning four straight NFC South titles, the Buccaneers have struggled against some of the best offenses in the league recently. Their secondary alone was one of the worst in the league in 2024. Advertisement While the Bucs clearly addressed some of those needs this offseason, one key one remains. Linebacker. ESPN writer Aaron Schatz went over every NFL team's biggest positional hole after the draft and chose inside linebacker as the biggest need for the Bucs, especially given the age of franchise legend Lavonte David. "Lavonte David is still really good, but he's 35 years old. The bigger question is who will be playing next to him now that K.J. Britt is gone," Schatz said. "The Bucs signed Anthony Walker Jr., but he was a bit of a disappointment last season for Miami. Another possibility is third-year man SirVocea Dennis, but he played only four games last season. Veteran Deion Jones appeared in two games for the Bucs, his fourth team in four seasons." Advertisement Schatz is an analyst who looks at the numbers more than most others do in his field. You don't need a mathematical equation to know that it feels like Tampa's linebacker situation is a ticking time bomb. And unless the Buccaneers bring a linebacker in, it may only get worse. Bucs Super Bowl Optimism Centers on 2 Key Veteran Re-Signings
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason might have looked a little different if a couple of things hadn't gone as the franchise wanted. We remember the big contract saga with Chris Godwin, and at one point, the receiver stated he did think he was going to leave, which would have left a giant hole in the offense. Advertisement With the Buccaneers able to retain Godwin, along with all other offensive pieces, it is run-it-back time with Josh Grizzard. But defensively, the franchise also managed to keep the ageless Lavonte David, who signed on for another season. Two key veterans who have been instrumental in the Buccaneers' success over the past few years are now staying put. And for CBS Sports, the franchise keeping a hold of both Godwin and David should give fans a reason to be hopeful about 2025. "The Buccaneers were able to keep two key core pieces intact this offseason," CBS Sports writes. "First, they secured long-time linebacker Lavonte David on a one-year deal as he enters his age-35 season. Then, they lured Chris Godwin back to Tampa with a three-year, $66 million extension. While these players are a bit long in the tooth, they've been instrumental pieces to their string of success over the last half-decade. Keeping them in-house should go a long way in Tampa Bay, continuing to push for deep playoff runs." Advertisement As for David, he has been the cornerstone of the defense for years. In his 17 games last season, he posted 122 combined tackles, nine tackles for loss, an interception, three forced fumbles, and his second-most sacks ever in a season (5.5). So he was still productive at the ripe old age of 34. Managing to keep both Godwin and David in the building for at least another season, gives the Buccaneers the chance to continue their way up the NFC pecking order with a deep playoff run definitely on the menu in 2025. Bucs get Lavonte David replacement in 2026 mock draft
The 2025 NFL Draft hasn't been over for a week yet, and we are already looking ahead to the 2026 installment of everyone's second favorite event on the calendar. While nothing replaces the Super Bowl, the draft has shown it is the second-best thing for fans every year. Thanks to draft analysts like Jordan Reid at ESPN, we already have a 2026 NFL Mock Draft to see what they think the Bucs need for the next draft cycle. Advertisement The Bucs didn't draft a linebacker with any of their picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, Reid wasted no time in plugging in a replacement for Lavonte David this mock draft. He has the Bucs targeting Georgia linebacker C.J. Allen with their first-round selection. He writes, "Many thought the Bucs would find Lavonte David's successor early in the 2025 draft, but that position is still open. Allen is a patient second-level defender who quarterbacked one of the country's best defenses last season. He's an aggressive hitter who can fill gaps in a hurry coming downhill against the run. But I'd like to see better awareness in pass coverage." It is sad to know the Lavonte David era is coming to an end, but the 2026 class is loaded at linebacker, which is good for the Bucs.
