REUTERS/Benoit Tessier Israel furious as France shuts four weapons stands at Paris Airshow LE BOURGET, France/JERUSALEM - France has shut down the four main Israeli company stands at the Paris Airshow for apparently displaying offensive weapons, in a move condemned by Israel that highlights the growing tensions between the traditional allies. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday that the instruction came from French authorities after Israeli firms failed to comply with a direction from a French security agency to remove offensive or kinetic weapons from the stands. A spokesperson for Gifas, the show's organiser, said some stands were closed, but declined to comment further. Three smaller Israeli stands, which didn't have hardware on display, and an Israeli Ministry of Defence stand, remain open. France and Israel, traditionally close allies, have had frosty relations in recent months with French President Emmanuel Macron increasingly critical over Israel's war in Gaza. Following Israel's missile strikes on Iran on Friday, Macron said Iran bore a heavy responsibility for destabilising the Middle East, but also urged Israel to show restraint. Israel's defence ministry said it had categorically rejected the order to remove some weapons systems from displays, and that exhibition organisers responded by erecting a black wall that separated the Israeli industry pavilions from others. This action, it added, was carried out in the middle of the night after Israeli defence officials and companies had already finished setting up their displays. "This outrageous and unprecedented decision reeks of policy-driven and commercial considerations," the ministry said in a statement. "The French are hiding behind supposedly political considerations to exclude Israeli offensive weapons from an international exhibition - weapons that compete with French industries." Rubio suggests US may withdraw from peace talks in Ukraine if it finds them impossible

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the US is ready to abandon efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine if it sees that this is an unattainable goal. Source: BFMTV with reference to Rubio at Paris Le Bourget Airport, as reported by European Pravda Details: Rubio arrived in Paris on Thursday (17 April) to take part in the first discussions on Ukraine between Americans, Europeans, and Ukrainians at a time when the Washington-initiated ceasefire talks have stalled and Europeans are trying to make their voices heard. He said on Friday (18 April) that it was necessary to determine in "a matter of days" whether peace in Ukraine was possible, stressing that the United States had other priorities, following meetings in Paris between Americans, Europeans and Ukrainians. Background: Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called the meetings in Paris on Thursday 17 April a diplomatic success for France which had brought Americans, Europeans and Ukrainians together at the same table. Telegram founder Pavel Durov back in Dubai after six months in France

Pavel Durov, Telegram founder and Chief Executive, is back in Dubai after spending more than six months of being stuck on legal charges in France, and said it felt 'great to be home'. Durov was arrested by French authorities at Le Bourget Airport north of Paris on August 24 last year, based on an arrest warrant issued by the public prosecutor's office. The 40-year-old was charged for Telegram's alleged refusal to cooperate with investigations into illegal activities and later released on a US$5 million bail, and the condition that he remain in France and check in at a local police station twice a week. Telegram founder Pavel Durov back in Dubai On Monday, Durov said on his Telegram account: 'As you may have heard, I've returned to Dubai after spending several months in France due to an investigation related to the activity of criminals on Telegram. The process is ongoing, but it feels great to be home. 'I want to thank the investigative judges for letting this happen, as well as my lawyers and team for their relentless efforts in demonstrating that, when it comes to moderation, cooperation, and fighting crime. For years, Telegram not only met, but exceeded its legal obligations. 'I'm also deeply grateful for the millions of people around the world who have shown their support throughout this unexpected journey – it has meant a lot. There is nothing our billion-strong community can't overcome.' Quoting a source, French wire agency Agence France Presse said an investigating judge had authorised Durov to leave France for 'several weeks'. Russian news agency TASS quoted a French prosecutor's office source as saying 'the judicial supervision obligations for Pavel Durov have been suspended for the period lasting from March 15 to April 7'. Durov, born in Russia, has been awarded UAE and French citizenship. Telegram's headquarters have been in Dubai since 2021. In a September 2024 story, Wall Street Journal said, Telegram has been cooperating with the authorities following Durov's arrest and 'regularly turning over phone numbers and other information about users suspected of illegal activity'. After his arrest, Durov had insisted that the social media platform is not 'some sort of anarchic paradise'. In a post on his social media app, he blamed surging numbers of Telegram users (close to 950mat the time), which 'caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform'.
