French films with English subtitles to watch in February 2025

Lost in Frenchlation has seven French films with English subtitles lined up, plus two walking tours, and Q&As with directors. Here are the films for February. Le Dossier Maldoror (Maldoror) – Thursday, February 6th What? An impulsive young police officer, assigned to a covert unit to monitor a dangerous sex offender following the disappearance of two young women, goes it alone after the investigation falters. When? Tour tickets can be bought here for €17. Spectateurs! (Filmlovers!) – Wednesday, February 12th What? Arnaud Desplechin's 'docufiction drama' love letter to cinema follows in the footsteps of Paul Dédalus – the director's cinematic alter-ego, who featured in 1996 film Comment je me suis disputé... (ma vie sexuelle) (My Sex Life... or How I Got into an Argument) and 2015 hit Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse (My Golden Days). This movie goes right back to the character's childhood, and tells the story of how he got introduced to the movies: as a spectator, a cinephile, and – finally – a film-maker. Think The Fabelmans with a French twist… When? Arrive for pre-screening drinks at 7pm. The film starts at 8pm – and there will be a Q&A with the director afterwards. Where? A penniless and needy writer in 1970s Paris falls for the charms of a rising movie star in a song-and-dance whirlwind of a musical – but the trans-European road to romance is paved with dud intentions, misunderstandings and jealousy. Singer Clara Luciani stars. When? A romantic musicals movie-themed walking tour starts from the Pont Neuf Metro at 5pm, while drinks ahead of the movie start at the cinema at 7pm, with the screening at 8pm. Where? Par Amour (Call of Water) – Thursday, February 20th What? A mother on the verge of a breakdown struggles to cope with the bizarre behaviour of her oldest son after he goes missing during a day at the seaside. His explanation for his sudden obsession with water seems other-worldly. When? Drinks at 7pm, screening at 8pm followed by Q&A with director Elise Otzenberger. Where? Dystopian sci-fi adventure in which an activist vanishes shortly after being shot by a police officer with a flashball gun during a protest that turns violent. She wakes up on another world. When? When the frozen body of an industrialist (Louis de Funès) is restored to life after nearly 55 years frozen in the Arctic ice, his descendants pretend to be from his time to spare him the culture shock. When? Midnight in Paris tour at 5pm, drinks at the cinema from 7pm, screening at 8pm. Where? L'Épée de Bois, 100 Rue Mouffetard, 75005 Paris. Tickets? Movie tickets are available online here. La Fille d'un Grand Amour (Child of True Love) – Thursday, February 27th What? A film student's documentary project about her estranged parents has an unexpected effect – it makes them realise that they still have deep feelings for one another, and they take their first, tentative steps on the path to reconciliation.
