Sunderland make Le Fee move permanent for record fee

The 25-year-old arrived at the Stadium of Light on a six-month loan in January and was a key player as Sunderland won the Championship play-offs after finishing fourth in the table. Le Fee has penned a four-year deal and will cost a reported £19.3million ($26 million) after a clause in his loan deal was activated once Sunderland sealed promotion. "I said before the play-off final that my heart was in Sunderland - I wanted to stay and this made it the most important game of my life. Together, we did it," Le Fee told the club website. "From the moment I arrived, I have enjoyed my football, my team-mates and our supporters. We shared an incredible experience and now we get to take the next step." Le Fee had previously worked with Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris at Lorient before joining Rennes and a big money move to Roma less than 12 months ago. However, he made just 10 appearances for the Italian giants before being loaned out. © 2025 AFP

Enzo Le Fee to kickstart Sunderland recruitment drive as transfer targets lined up

ENZO Le Fee will be Sunderland's first signing of the summer as the Black Cats set about planning for life in the Premier League after their dramatic play-off final success at Wembley. Le Fee joined Sunderland on loan in January but the deal included an automatic purchase clause should the Black Cats win promotion to the top flight. That will now be triggered, in a deal that could be worth up to £20m, to the delight of Le Fee, who has loved his time on Wearside since joining the club in the winter window and was desperate to extend his stay. 'I want to be in Sunderland next year, for sure,' Le Fee said in an interview with The Times ahead of the play-off final. Sunderland's players and staff celebrated on Saturday night at a party in a central London hotel, with the team bus pictured arriving at the location and the Wembley heroes being mobbed by supporters after Tommy Watson's stoppage time winner secured victory over Sheffield United and promotion to the Premier League. RECOMMENDED READING: Attention of the club's bosses will now swiftly turn to preparing for life in the top flight, with summer transfer targets having long been identified. Sunderland chiefs, the recruitment team and head coach Regis Le Bris have held several transfer meetings over the course of recent weeks, with two target lists compiled so the Black Cats were ready to strike regardless of whether they were playing in the Premier League or Championship next season. Sunderland will now set about bolstering their squad for their return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, with the capture of Le Fee a fine start to the summer recruitment drive. The midfielder has starred for the Black Cats since joining on loan from Roma, where he'd struggled to settle after his big-money summer move from Rennes. Le Bris coached Le Fee previously at Lorient and was thrilled to be able to reunite with the midfielder, who has covered on the left flank for Sunderland in the absence of Romaine Mundle, but on Saturday was used in a central role, where the head coach believes he's at his best. 'First of all, he has been a strong team mate,' said Le Bris of Le Fee after the play-off final success. 'This is what I want to reiterate. He started as a left winger, playing most of the time in position. When we had the opportunity to play with Romaine [Mundle] again, it was a chance to play Enzo in his main position. 'Because they have not had much experience together, their references were probably not very clean. We felt that our connection in midfield was not perfect in this game, but we felt that the experience of playing was useful later in the game. It proved to be the case.'
