Middletown High School Holds Annual ‘Experience Our Programs' Event
ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y.–Middletown High School hosted its annual 'Experience Our Programs' event on May 9, in which all the Middletown School District public schools presented what their classes and programs had created. Hundreds of students from public schools all over Middletown milled around presentation tables and exhibits, and 1,300 parents, friends, and visitors jostled through the school. Artwork from the district's 7,500 students filled halls and classrooms. Some students donated their art to be auctioned, hoping to fund a student's art degree. A sixth-grade social studies class hosted a game show in the library. The district Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps showed its students' drone flying abilities. Students in the biomedical program taught visitors simple medical procedures. Kinsley told The Epoch Times about her third-grade class's book that she helped write. Her class has made a book every year for the past three years. The class recorded their voices reading the book and made QR codes to let people listen to them. This year's book is called 'A Spooky Story,' and the goal was to help the students learn about the writing process, including prewriting, drafting, and editing. The teachers also helped with grammar, spelling, and overall understandability of the story. Related Stories 3/19/2025 3/5/2025 Kinsley described the process of making the story: 'It was hard and kind of easy. And it was really easy to figure out what I wanted to write about.' The Middletown school district has joined a global movement teaching the 'Leader in Me' program in schools. Middletown is in its first year of the program, so currently, the teachers are receiving training on how to apply the curriculum in their classes. The Leader in Me program aims to inspire leadership in students, using principles from the books 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People' and 'The 4 Disciplines of Execution.' The curriculum will be included in classes starting next school year, Christine Dumais told The Epoch Times. Dumais is the cultural co-lead, one of the two people in charge of running the Leader in Me program in Middletown. Dumais described the reason why the school decided to start implementing the Leader in Me curriculum. 'We want our students to be more independent and to take more ownership over their work,' she said. Oliver Mantyk/The Epoch Times Middletown High School student Jadiella spoke about the biomedical section of 'Project Lead The Way.' Project Lead The Way is a program that helps students make advances in STEM fields such as medicine, engineering, and computer science. Students in the first year of the program learn about crime scenes and cause of death analysis. The second year goes into human body systems. In the third year, students learn about medical intervention, teaching them what to do in medical emergencies. Students learn more advanced medical and surgical techniques in the fourth year. Students who complete the program receive a Certificate in Medicine, which in some cases leads to job opportunities in the medical field. 'It's really fun. It's very interactive, which I was very happy with. There's lots of dissecting and hands-on, which is great,' Jediella told The Epoch Times. ' It's not so boring, just learning and absorbing, because it's a lot of hard information. Some definitely want to be hands-on.' Oliver Mantyk/The Epoch Times Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano has three grandkids in the school district and is himself a graduate of Middletown High School. He visits the event every year. 'When we bring business leaders and community leaders into the school district, into these schools and they see what's being provided here, they're just so impressed. And I think it's a big plus for industry and economic development and the community,' DeStefano told The Epoch Times.

Hutchison Beach Elementary earns ‘Legacy School' recognition
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Hutchison Beach Elementary is now one of 21 schools worldwide to reach 'Legacy school' status by the Leader in Me program. They have been working for 12 years to reach legacy status. To become a legacy, the school must exhibit growth in academic performance, leadership development, and positive school culture. Their mission is to continue cultivating community leaders. 'It's about leadership skills that will carry you through life. And it's about making eye contact and shaking hands and showing the community that I might be ten years old or five years old, but I'm a leader and I'm going to lead my own legacy,' Hutchison Beach Elementary School Principal Glenda Nouskhajian said. The program also teaches students life skills, like time management. Safely dispose of expired medication on National Drug Take Back Day 'I put first things first and do my homework before I go play. Now we actually take those outside of our home, and like we can synergize maybe and work together on something,' Hutchison Beach Elementary 5th grade student Ben Nelson said. As part of the program, students participate in four service projects throughout the school year. They also host a leadership day, guiding visitors on a tour around the school. The Leader in Me program model focuses on the eight habits of a leader. 'Being a leader means to me, just following the eight habits, being respectful, and definitely having confidence. Also, doing things without someone watching. So integrity is a big role that you need to have,' Hutchison Beach Elementary 5th grade student Penelope Prekop said. The goal is to have students apply those skills after Elementary School. 'These are great skills that are going to make these two and all of our Leader in Me students absolute successes. We're building the future one student at a time, and it starts right here with the Leader in Me,' Bay District Schools Superintendent Mark McQueen said. Several other Bay District schools are also following the Leader in Me program. Leader in Me officials will visit Hutchison Beach Elementary in August. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. White Hall Elementary receives statewide recognition as an Exemplary Practice School
FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — White Hall Elementary School is one of three schools in the state that was recognized by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) as an Exemplary Practice School for 2025, which was celebrated on Monday with an assembly. 'It is absolutely phenomenal,' Principal Taylor Myers told 12 News. 'I'm so excited not just for myself, but for my entire staff and the students. They've worked so hard over the last several years and they truly deserve this recognition.' Myers believes one of the biggest factors that contributed to White Hall Elementary School receiving this honor is the school's 'Leader in Me' program. She stated that this program deals a lot with data-driven notebooks, which they allow the students to take leadership of. 'We're teaching every student to be a leader,' said Myers. 'So, they're kind of responsible for tracking their data, looking at their scores, setting goals for themselves, amongst a lot of other things.' According to Myers, the program also implements student-led conferences for 3rd and 4th grade students. This allows the students to take their data notebooks home every nine weeks and discuss the information with their parents. 'They talk to their parents about those data notebooks and kind of share how they're doing and their progress,' Myers added. 'It gives them some ownership on the things that they're doing.' Marion County offering garden beds for rent Myers also told 12 News that the Exemplary Practice Schools program first started in 2024, making this the second year that this honor was given out and the school's first time being selected. 'So we're pretty excited to be chosen,' she said. Myers added that this honor is something you have to be asked to apply for. Once White Hall Elementary was asked to apply, they wrote and submitted a narrative that was followed by a subsequent visit from WVDE representatives. The school was honored alongside two other elementary schools in the Mountain State. Another school in our viewing area, Mylan Park Elementary School, celebrated receiving this honor with a similar assembly this past Friday. Myers said that she believes receiving this honor will help White Hall Elementary School continue to grow in the future. 'It'll help the students continue to push and really strive to do their best,' she added. 'So we're really proud of that. Their test scores are great but also, they're great students too.' Being recognized as an Exemplary Practice School will also help White Hall Elementary reach out to other schools, share the Leader in Me program and conduct visits with other schools, according to Myers. She added that she wants to highlight how proud she is of all her staff, students and former principal Mrs. Murray, who also attended the assembly. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
