Trump argued lifting the sanctions from Syria would give the country a "chance at greatness" after a century of brutal rule by the Assad family. Ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad fled his country after al-Sharaa's lightning rebel offensive in December, ending the 24-year regime and paving the way for a new government. But the Syrian leader has a marred history with the US. For years, he was imprisoned by US forces after being captured in Iraq. Formerly known as Abu Mohammed al Jolani, al-Sharaa joined al-Qaeda terrorists fighting the US. The US once even offered $10m bounty for any information about his location. al-Sharaa still faces a warrant for his arrest on terrorism charges in Iraq. Trump is currently in the Middle East as part of his first major tour since taking over the Oval Office. It comes one day after Don inked the biggest arms deal in history to supply Saudi Arabia with $142bn worth of weapons, the White House said. The sale is part of a landmark $600 billion deal with Jeddah that was signed after Trump landed in Riyadh to kickstart his Middle East tour on Tuesday. The President has also taken a shot at rival Iran in a marquee speech, saying the Islamic Republic needed to make up its mind about whether it wanted to chase developing a nuclear weapon and get war or choose peace and a trading relationship. He said: "If Iran rejects the olive branch, we will have no choice but to inflict massive maximum pressure, drive Iranian exports to zero... and take all action required to stop the regime from having a nuclear weapon. "Iran will never have a nuclear weapon." The US-Saudi deal would improve the defence capabilities of Saudi Arabia, including its military academies. Energy, mining, space, and sport are also part of the gigantic agreement, which fell short of Trump's $1tn goal. Powerful business executives travelled with Trump, including his key ally and SpaceX boss Elon Musk ,the founders of finance titan BlackRock, and the founder and CEO of chip giant Nvidia. Don received a royal welcome from Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler Mohammed bin Salman as he began his tour of the Middle East. It marks Trump's first state visit of his second administration, after Saudi Arabia was also the first state visit in 2016. They are expected to discuss Iran's nuclear program, Israel's war in Gaza, oil prices, and more during his time in the Middle East. After disrupting world trade with his brutal tariffs, the president will focus on securing new investments in the US from Gulf states. Trump has also said he may travel on Thursday to Turkey for potential face-to-face talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
